Teamcenter “unified”: Siemens PLM Software’s Next Generation PLM Platform - A New White Paper from CIMdata

ANN ARBOR, Michigan — CIMdata announces the availability of a review of Teamcenter 8, a Siemens PLM Software collaborative Product Definition management (cPDm) solution. The review traces the roots of Siemens PLM Software’s next generation Teamcenter “unified” platform—from a set of integrated PLM enabling applications to a new extended enterprise-enabled four-tier unified architecture that incorporates the latest in technology and business functionality. The paper describes Teamcenter 8, which represents the second major release of the “unified” platform, and how it is the culmination of many years of steady development and evolution of the Teamcenter suite. Additionally, customer testimonials from Ford, ELTA Systems Ltd., and LM Wind Power are included to provide their experience in transitioning from earlier versions of Teamcenter, what the solution is being used for, and what type of benefits the company is receiving. This review also provides an overview of the Teamcenter 8 product suite.

Today’s Teamcenter, starting with the release of Teamcenter 2007, has a four-tier unified architecture that incorporates the latest in technology and business functionality. Since its release, Siemens PLM states that there are currently more than 2,000 installations of Teamcenter on the unified architecture (i.e., an installation of Teamcenter 2007 or later versions). Siemens estimates that this represents 30%-40% of its customers that had implemented earlier versions of Teamcenter to provide core PDM functionality. Siemens PLM customers interviewed by CIMdata indicated that they are happy with their transition to the unified version of Teamcenter. They stated that they have been able to reduce customizations and cost while obtaining broader and improved functionality and higher performance.

“There have been some misconceptions that the current version of Teamcenter is simply a combination of the older Teamcenter Engineering or Teamcenter Enterprise,” said Ken Amann, CIMdata Director of Research. “While Teamcenter 8 incorporates value-added capabilities of earlier versions of both Teamcenter Engineering and Teamcenter Enterprise, this latest Teamcenter is built on a modern, robust architecture, and incorporates a significant level of new technology and functionality—it is definitely not the next version of an existing solution.” he stated.

For more information please contact CIMdata at +1(734) 668-9922. Copies of the Teamcenter “unified” paper are available at no cost through the CIMdata website.

Autodesk Inventor Helps West Hills Construction Deliver Renewable Energy Solutions

Digital Prototyping Aids Design of Energy Generation Technology for Large Facilities.

SAN RAFAEL, Calif — Autodesk, Inc has named West Hills Construction, Inc., as the June Autodesk Inventor of the Month for its successful use of Autodesk Inventor to deliver energy efficiency, management, storage and distributed generation solutions.

Using a combination of technologies, West Hills Construction helps customers not only reduce their energy use, but also generate energy onsite from renewable resources. The result has both environmental and economic benefits for all involved.

West Hills Construction was recently contracted to design an energy management system using photovoltaic (PV) arrays for a 37-foot-tall, 86,000-square-foot building that desired onsite energy generation. West Hills Construction used Autodesk Inventor software for Digital Prototyping to optimize every aspect of the design and construction of the massive energy management system.

Digital Tools at Every Stage
Following training provided by Autodesk Gold Partner KETIV Technologies, West Hills prepared a 2D site diagram of the energy management system using AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical and AutoCAD Mechanical software, before importing it into Inventor software.

To seamlessly manage the data throughout the design, West Hills Construction used Autodesk Vault Professional software, together with Autodesk Showcase, Autodesk 3ds Max Design and Autodesk Maya software to create client presentations with superior visual fidelity.

“Every step of the way, we have Autodesk Digital Prototyping tools to help make us more efficient,” said Rusty Wood, vice president of West Hills Construction’s energy division. “We can perform an analysis to confirm the feasibility of a design. We can then generate production-ready models that enable clients to see exactly what we’re building for them.”

Such capabilities reduce the need for outside consultants to be involved in the process, and significantly reduce costly change orders later in the development cycle. As the firm prepares feasibility studies for a major new project with a global food processing company — a project that promises to offset the company’s reliance on the electrical grid while reducing its overall energy costs — Digital Prototyping has never been more valuable.

“West Hills Construction is using Digital Prototyping to outpace the competition,” said Robert “Buzz” Kross, senior vice president, Manufacturing Industry Group at Autodesk. “Whether accelerating an existing project timeline or helping to win new business, Digital Prototyping brings a powerful advantage.”

EDSA Power Analytics Gateway Introduced

First Power Analytics Platform to Make Data From All Electrical Power Vendors Systems Interoperable.

EDSA® Power Analytics Gateway™ Facilitates Real-time Predictive Analytics from Major Building Management and Power Quality Systems.

SAN DIEGO, Calif – EDSA, the leading developer of power analytics solutions for the design, testing, and management of complex electrical power systems, today unveiled its patented EDSA® Power Analytics Gateway™ (or EPAG™), now the industry’s leading data integration platform that allows electrical energy monitoring and management systems from major vendors to exchange data. This technology is being deployed in mission-critical applications ranging from datacenters to oil drilling platforms to microgrids around the world.

EPAG solves one of the most vexing problems facing electrical system operators: the lack of networkability between competing vendors’ systems, which prohibits the sharing of data between them. Power equipment and monitoring systems from different manufacturers typically use proprietary, vendor-specific communications protocols that prevent power quality meters, breakers, transformers, generators, and their proprietary monitoring and communications systems from sharing data among one another. The absence of open communications protocols has left operators in the position of having to work with multiple information systems themselves, or manage their operations with incomplete information about the status of the electrical power infrastructure.

“EPAG is an architecture that provides for multiple interconnect standards and protocols from web services to OPC. The optimized structure works with virtually any major building management system (BMS), power management, or data acquisition system bringing Paladin Power Analytics to those customers. This vendor neutral strategy eliminates the need to add another redundant data acquisition system,” said Mark A. Ascolese, Chairman and CEO of EDSA. “The result is our users get the benefit of EDSA’s patented, industry-leading Power Analytics and simulation capabilities for almost half the costs… and in one easy-to-use dashboard.”

EPAG gives facility and electrical system operators an anything-to-anything networking solution that, when used with EDSA’s Paladin® Live™ or Paladin Smart Grid™ platforms, aggregates all of the real-time data being generated by formerly-proprietary equipment and systems within their infrastructure. Or, put another way, a single, seamless body of information can now be created from industry-leading management systems such as the OSIsoft® PI System®, Square D® SMS®, Siemens® Apogee®, Eaton® Foreseer® , Honeywell® Niagara Framework® , Johnson Controls® Metasys® , Viridity Energy’s Vpower®, Dassault Enovia® and Catia® systemsand others or directly from discrete sensors or intelligent devices.

Aggregating Data Essential for Accurate Analytics
Armed with this virtually limitless supply of power systems data, EPAG enables Paladin Live and Paladin Smart Grid to make highly-accurate predictions about the operational state of power infrastructure, by not only attaining access to real-time data, but by comparing data results back to the original design model; variations between the as-is and as-designed readings allow operators to isolate and preempt potential problems at their earliest stages, and ensure optimal performance and energy efficiency.

The assimilation and interpretation of data from a myriad of data-generating sources is essential in any type of predictive planning; two of the better-known examples are Business Analytics and Power Analytics.

• Business Analytics are the science of using advanced mathematical models to make remarkably accurate predictions about the financial health of individuals, businesses, or governments. These mathematical models rely on data from a wide range of sources – financial databases, payroll records, inventory systems, MRP systems, etc. – in order to allow aggregated “composite” calculations to be made from the resulting information, such as P/E ratios, DSO, EBITDA etc.

• Power Analytics operate in much the same way, in order to assess the “health” of an organization’s electrical power infrastructure. However, instead of monitoring complex financial data, Power Analytics compares power readings from components throughout the power network back to their corresponding component specifications in the original design model. Any variations are automatically detected and communicated in understandable summary fashion. By identifying and isolating electrical power problems – or just sub-optimal performance or energy inefficiency – Power Analytics allows facility operators to ensure the highest possible levels of power system reliability and the lowest possible levels of problems.

By serving as a universal translator for any data acquisition system, BMS, or data-producing component in an electrical network, EPAG ensures that no clue that could point to downstream operational power problems is overlooked.

The EDSA Power Analytics Gateway is an integral part of all standard Paladin platforms.

Autodesk Software Helps Remedy Entertainment Create Thrilling Mystery of “Alan Wake”

Autodesk 3ds Max, MotionBuilder and Mudbox Software Used for Previsualization, Modeling and Animation on Top-Rated Game Release.

SAN RAFAEL, Calif - 3D art creation and animation software from Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ:ADSK) played an integral role in Remedy Entertainment’s production of their recently released video game, “Alan Wake.” Compelling storytelling and atmosphere are the cornerstones of the “psychological action thriller” game. Autodesk 3ds Max, Autodesk MotionBuilder and Autodesk Mudbox software were used to help create environments, characters and in-game animations accentuating the eerily realistic mood and tone of the title.

The game takes a new approach to the traditional action-adventure game, introducing an unconventional hero — suspense writer Alan Wake — in the investigation of his wife’s disappearance. It uniquely employs light as a gameplay element — using it as a weapon against Alan’s enemies, called “the Taken,” as well as to denote whether or not he is in danger. As a character steps into the darkness, danger lurks, while light signals safety to the player.

“With ‘Alan Wake’ we were keen to build memorable characters, environments and cinematic sequences that would not only tell the story, but also establish the right mood and tone for the game,” said Sami Vanhatalo, lead technical artist, Remedy Entertainment. “Autodesk tools helped us do just that. We devised a faster and more efficient workflow that allowed our artists to create multiple iterations and add more realism to scenes.”

Faster, More Interactive and More Artistic Character Development

Remedy artists first modeled the game’s characters using 3ds Max software and then brought them into Mudbox software for detailing. “The characters are all primarily humanoid, so we wanted them to look and feel organic. Mudbox was the ideal tool to help accomplish this,” commented Vanhatalo. “Had we built these characters solely in a more traditional polygonal modeling package, it would have felt like more of an engineering process. With Mudbox our workflow is much more interactive and artistic.”

The characters were then animated using MotionBuilder software, with a blend of motion capture and keyframe animation. For the Taken, Remedy’s artists used the software to help process motion capture data and then blended it with supernatural movements that were hand animated in the application.

“We were able to achieve much better results with MotionBuilder, in a much faster way,” said Henrik Enqvist, animation programmer, Remedy Entertainment. “Building complicated character rigs is a huge time and resource drain on our animation team, but with MotionBuilder we get an out-of-the-box working IK rig that our artists love to use.”

Dynamic Environments Enrich Gameplay Experience

Dynamic environments are an essential part of the game, as interactions with Alan’s surroundings often determine outcomes in “Alan Wake”. Remedy built all of the environments, vehicles and physics-related simulations for the game using 3ds Max software.

Environments are also a key component to the moods created in the game. For example, as danger approaches, the forests darken and become more animated. The dynamic forest environments include tree branches, leaves and terrain that react to player interactions and wind effects, and were carefully constructed using complex shaders and simulations.

Looking to the Future

“Alan Wake” is the first installment of a bigger story that aims to pave the way for future game sequels. Remedy Entertainment is currently integrating the 2011 releases of 3ds Max, Mudbox and MotionBuilder software into its pipeline.

“The only sure thing in the game industry is change. As a developer you’ve always got to be on your toes looking out for new workflows and ways to do things faster and better,” added Vanhatalo. “We will probably always be heading toward creating even more interesting plot lines, characters and more complex animation. It’s important to have the latest Autodesk technology available in 3ds Max, Mudbox and MotionBuilder to help us take our work to the next level.”

Autodesk 3ds Max Entertainment Creation Suite

The primary Autodesk software tools used by Remedy Entertainment on “Alan Wake” are available as part of the Autodesk 3ds Max Entertainment Creation Suite, which offers 3ds Max software with both MotionBuilder and Mudbox software. 3ds Max provides a comprehensive, integrated 3D modeling, animation, rendering and compositing solution. Mudbox helps artists sculpt highly detailed models more quickly and intuitively. MotionBuilder provides artists with a real-time animation engine for more interactive creative feedback and efficient handling of large amounts of animation data. The complementary toolsets enable artists to expand creative capacity while improving production quality and efficiency. The Autodesk suggested retail price for the Entertainment Creation Suite is US$4,995*. For more information, visit www.autodesk.com/entertainmentcreationsuites.

New free guide from Sescoi on investing in CAM software

Sescoi’s new “Investing in CAM Software” guide helps engineers to examine their motives for investing in CAD/CAM software, the benefits they should reasonably expect, and the software features they should be looking for. Download your free copy at: http://www.sescoi.com/fileadmin/en/pdf/WhitePaper_investing-in-CAM__EN.pdf

By evaluating the reasons for purchasing new CAM software, engineering companies will be able to decide which type of system is most suitable and establish whether CAM software will meet the longer term growth demands of their businesses. For particular applications, specialist add-ons such as WorkNC’s Auto 5 automatic 5-axis programming or its Feature Recognition module can produce staggering productivity improvements.

Advice on evaluating the supplier, its training, support and development mechanisms is included in the guide. Working in partnership with a CAM software supplier will ensure that there is flexibility within the chosen system and that the supplier is prepared to customize the system for the customer’s benefit. Additionally, some CAM software vendors can offer complementary products such as Sescoi’s WorkPLAN ERP software and its WorkXPlore 3D CAD viewer which encourages collaborative working. The integration of these extra systems with the CAM software can produce a revolution in working methods.

Benchmarking and visiting reference user sites help to measure how well a CAM software handles and manipulates CAD data, its ease of use, the quality of the toolpaths it generates, the effectiveness of its simulation and collision avoidance, and helps to verify the quality of the after sales service. Sescoi’s trials show that the machine cycle times for the same component can be very significantly shortened with WorkNC, saving cost and adding to the available machining capacity. Similarly, the most optimized toolpaths will greatly improve the quality of the finished part, extending the capabilities of a company immeasurably.

The guide explains the benefits that shop floor programming can bring to a business and the importance of ease of use, such as WorkNC’s automated ‘One Button CAM’ methodology, in making this work. It also describes how the speed of calculation, the configuration of the licenses and multi tasking capabilities can all help to maximize productivity by greatly reducing programming times.

By considering the points outlined in the guide in relation to their own companies, engineers may find that the gains in productivity which they expected from CAM software can be significantly more than anticipated.

COMSOL Announces Chemical Reaction Engineering Module

New Module for COMSOL Multiphysics provides a single environment for modeling and simulating reaction systems and processes.

BURLINGTON, MA — COMSOL Inc, the developer of the market leading COMSOL Multiphysics simulation environment, today releases the Chemical Reaction Engineering Module. This new module is built on the COMSOL platform to create a single environment where engineers and scientists obtain highly accurate studies of material transport and chemical reactions of a wide assortment of chemistries under different operating conditions. Users can simulate reaction systems ranging from micro-reactors in biotechnology to unit operations in chemical processes and gain essential knowledge early in the development phase. The net result is more cost-effective and efficient development cycles for both products and processes.

“The Chemical Reaction Engineering Module is suitable for a diverse range of product and process development applications,” says Henrik von Schenk, Chemical Engineering Product Manager with COMSOL. “It’s particularly useful in the design of sensors for analytical instruments as well as for designing catalysts and filters in automotive exhaust systems. The Chemical Reaction Engineering Module will be especially valuable when developing products and processes in industries like consumer products, fine and specialty chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and bulk chemicals.”

The Chemical Reaction Engineering Module, which combines functionality of two earlier modules, the Chemical Engineering Module and the Reaction Engineering Module, leverages the newly re-engineered COMSOL version 4 architecture to deliver major new functionality and superior usability. With the new module, engineers and scientists can investigate chemical reactions under the controlled conditions of perfectly mixed systems in laboratory studies. Since reactions are directly accessible in a single easy-to-use interface, users can study the influence of multiple concentration and temperature variations in real operating conditions.
“The fusion of our premier chemical engineering capabilities into a single dedicated solution offering an all-inclusive, easy-to-use environment is a great convenience for our customers,” says von Schenk. “Productivity jumps with the new workflow and the ease with which users can manage species, reactions, and material and energy transport in one simulation.”

The Chemical Reaction Engineering Module’s easy-to-use customizable interfaces for defining chemical reactions, mass and energy transport, and porous media flow help users simulate reacting systems accurately. Fully integrated in the COMSOL Multiphysics model set up, the chemical reaction interface enables users to simply type in their chemical reaction formulas. The software then automatically computes the reaction kinetics as well as defines the mass and energy balances. When done, the resulting mass and energy balances are ready to be used to solve the reactor models for perfectly mixed systems of batch reactors, semi-batch reactors, CSTR, and plug-flow reactors.

Users can easily move up from these smaller, less computationally demanding simulations of perfectly mixed reactor models to larger-scale simulations of time- and space-dependent models. “The Chemical Reaction Engineering Module helps you make smart design decisions quickly using comparisons between ideal reactor models and detailed time and space simulations,” explains von Schenk. “It lets you handle simulations beginning at a simple level, which makes it easy to evaluate the chemistry of a system and find reaction time scales, temperatures, and ideal operating conditions. Then, you can use the identical model to run full 3D simulations for investigating and designing processes and reactors in real-world operating conditions.”

The Chemical Reaction Engineering Module provides interfaces for mass transport that describe species transport by diffusion, convection, and migration in dilute and concentrated solutions. These interfaces can also describe transport in free and porous media. Based on principal physics effects that come as standard interfaces in COMSOL, laminar flow and heat transfer can be included in the simulation as well. Still, no matter what physics effect is involved, model set up is quick and follows the same intuitive operations. Users can also add and remove chemical reactions and species as well as change reaction mechanisms on the fly. Users can maintain several studies each with different chemistries and different operating conditions in the same model.
Import Thermodynamic Property Data Into COMSOL

The Chemical Reaction Engineering Module is compliant with CAPE-OPEN standards for modeling, simulating, and designing the operations of chemical processes. Additionally, it has the ability to read CHEMKIN® files, which define complete reacting systems, including physical and thermodynamic properties, for combustion, atmospheric chemistry, and other gas-phase reacting systems.

With the Chemical Reaction Engineering Module’s built-in CAPE-OPEN Wizard, users can combine components from multiple third-party software vendors in their COMSOL simulations. An integrated CAPE-OPEN browser makes finding and selecting thermodynamic and physical property information in external property data packages easy. This flexible combination of openness and ease of use can lead to high-fidelity descriptions of such properties as viscosity, density, heat capacity, and other thermodynamic properties for gases and liquids.
Chemical Reaction Engineering Module Highlights

• Automatic generation of reaction kinetics, mass, and energy balances from chemical reaction formulas
• Allows combinations of perfectly mixed reactor models to detailed time- and space-dependent descriptions in one model
• Extensive interfaces for simulating mass transport by diffusion, convection, and migration in dilute and concentrated solutions as well as in free and porous media
• Functionality for investigating different chemistries and operating conditions by adding and removing reactions, chemical species, and mass transport effects in different studies in a single model

SOPAL Selects V6 PLM Express and 3DVIA Composer

V6’s Lifelike Experience Capabilities Facilitate Innovation for a Fast Response to Changing Market.

DASSAULT SYSTÈMES SWYM CONFERENCE – Vélizy-Villacoublay, France – Dassault Systèmes (DS) has announced that SOPAL, a Tunisian manufacturer of complex and distinctively styled kitchen and bath fixtures, is using V6 PLM Express and 3DVIA Composer to cover the entire development process of its line of faucets and related equipment. Based on the unique V6 platform, SOPAL has adopted a PLM strategy for all of its products, from initial styling of new equipment to product phase out and end of life. Using Dassault Systèmes’ solutions, SOPAL can manage all of its product information, such as technical specifications, design data, manufacturing data, regulatory constraints and sales throughout the entire lifecycle.

SOPAL chose V6 PLM Express for its superior handling and lifelike visualization of sophisticated surfaces, enabling its designers to create the complex shapes in CATIA V6 that give its faucets a distinctive and attractive look. DELMIA’s V6 Machining Solution will be used to produce their tooling and speed up the entire process. This multi-brand implementation of V6 PLM Express allows SOPAL to keep track of each product and makes the data available to anybody in the company with a need to know.

With trends in faucet design changing often, SOPAL felt it had to remain flexible and reactive to market demand.

“Knowing how to detect new trends and delivering products that respond to these changes is of prime importance. Part of bringing the right product to market, while shortening delivery times as much as possible, is being able to see that product first, in a lifelike experience,” said Moez Regayeg, manager, SOPAL. “We used the lifelike visualization enabled by V6 to create an interactive 3D experience. We even went one step further with 3DVIA Mobile, and published the actual lifelike models of our products for viewing on customers’ iPhones.”

SOPAL chose 3DVIA Composer to quickly and easily document the assembly process, and deliver it in an interactive 3D experience, complete with animated procedures. SOPAL uses 3D animation to explain to architects, construction companies or the final customer how their products should be installed and how they function. To gain worldwide exposure, SOPAL recently published its product portfolio on the 3DVIA.com website, the DS online solution for searching, uploading & sharing ideas in 3D. “3DVIA will help promote our products worldwide,” said Regayeg.

V6 is key to enabling collaboration between SOPAL’s different departments and with subsidiaries. Working together accelerates the development process, fuels innovation and helps avoid mistakes. “As more people collaborate on a design and share ideas on the fly, changes are made, which is why they need to know that they are working on the latest and right version of a design,” said Regayeg.

“V6 covers all our needs in design, manufacturing, and documentation management all on the same DS V6 collaborative platform,” concluded Regayeg.
