Governments Around the World Embrace the Significant Performance Enhancements of the New Location Measurement Unit.
Berwyn, PA – TruePosition, Inc., a provider of wireless location technologies and solutions and a subsidiary of Liberty Media Corporation, today introduced the new TruePosition LMU-Universal. The TruePosition LMU-Universal is a software-defined receiver, which is installed at wireless cell towers and used to locate people who dial emergency numbers from their mobile phone.
The TruePosition LMU-Universal forms the backbone of the TruePosition Uplink Time Difference of Arrival (U-TDOA) Location Platform. TruePosition U-TDOA is currently deployed in the United States to locate people who dial 9-1-1 from their mobile phone in emergency situations. The location information is used by Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) to send the applicable first responders to proper location.
The TruePosition LMU-Universal is installed within cell towers to receive signals from the mobile phone that dials an emergency number. The difference in time that it takes the signal to reach multiple towers is used to calculate the phone’s location. Because the TruePosition LMU-Universal is so sensitive, TruePosition U-TDOA is able to work indoors and in dense urban environments with tall buildings where GPS performance is limited.
“The TruePosition LMU-Universal brings significant enhancements to the TruePosition U-TDOA Location Platform, since it delivers improved performance, accuracy, and flexibility,” stated Rob Anderson, Chief Technical Officer and Senior Vice President of Technology and Engineering for TruePosition. “It is a marvel of software and hardware engineering and a testament to our commitment to the mission-critical location-based safety and security market.”
In addition to better location accuracy, the TruePosition LMU-Universal supports multiple air interfaces, including GSM, CDMA, UMTS, LTE, and WiMAX. So, as mobile network operators migrate to 3G and beyond, the TruePosition LMU-Universal can evolve as well with a mere software upgrade. As a result, there is no need to purchase or install additional hardware, which ultimately provides a low total cost of ownership.
“The global demand for accurate and reliable wireless location information for mission-critical safety and security applications is on the rise,” added Stephen Stuut, Chief Executive Officer for TruePosition. “The new TruePosition LMU-Universal enables TruePosition to meet the increasing demand for these types of applications, and further emphasizes our leadership in this market.”
