ODA Announces New Branding of Development Platform

Phoenix, AZ: The Open Design Alliance (ODA) today announced Teigha™ (pronounced tee-ga), a new brand name of its software development platform for CAD and other graphics applications.

Since its founding in 1998, the ODA has developed an increasingly powerful set of components used for the development of CAD and technical graphics applications. Originally focused on providing tools for working with .dwg files, the ODA platform has expanded over the years to include support for .dgn, .dwf, .pdf, and .svg files, and has also grown in depth and complexity to the point where it can now be used as a platform on which developers can build technical graphics applications, including CAD systems.

The ODA platform will begin using the new Teigha name starting mid April.

Arnold van der Weide, President of the ODA, stated, “Because of the growth of the development platform into more broad and extensive areas, it became increasingly clear that we needed a new name that could encompass a wider range of technology. Previously we were using DWGdirect, DGNdirect, etc., but each of these names was focused on a specific area, with no unifying concept to tie them all together.”

White Bear Lake FIRST(R) Robotics Team Designs "Dr. Robotnic" With SpaceClaim

CONCORD, MA - SpaceClaim, provider of 3D Direct Modeling solutions, today announced its sponsorship of the White Bear Lake FIRST Robotics team (Team 2207) from White Bear Lake, MN. SpaceClaim was alerted to the opportunity by team head mentor Joe Viavattine, a Principal Project Engineer with SpaceClaim customer Medtronic (also a team sponsor). SpaceClaim contributed software licenses and support for the high school students to create their entry, Dr. Robotnic.

This year's FIRST Robotics Competition presented a robotic challenge around a new game called Breakaway, in which each team's robots must score as many points as possible by moving the balls on the field into goals set up in each corner. The White Bear Lake team leveraged the ease-of-use and flexibility of SpaceClaim's software through prototyping and testing. Students were able to go quickly back and forth between their virtual and physical models, experimenting with different approaches. Dr. Robotnic, the completed robot, is capable of dribbling and kicking a ball and moving in six directions without the need to rotate.

"SpaceClaim makes it so easy to manipulate components within the assembly," said the team's head mentor Joe Viavattine, Principal Project Engineer, Medtronic. "The students were able to grab a few components, try different scenarios, see how the design looked and then move them back if it didn't accomplish the objective. The students didn't have to worry about losing ground in trying out a lot of different approaches with SpaceClaim, as there was no harm in making errors."

More than 45,000 students on over 1,800 teams from around the world are competing this year. With only six weeks from the time each team receives its initial robotics kit to the submission date for the completed robot, time is of the essence in the design process. With his own experience using SpaceClaim at Medtronic, Viavattine knew the software would be an ideal tool for the students to use to express their wealth of creative ideas.

SpaceClaim also sponsored the FIRST Robotics Team from Steinart High School in Trenton, N.J.

Stratasys introduces new part support style for the FDM process

3D Printing Enhancement Reduces Support Material up to 40 Percent for Stratasys FDM Process.

MINNEAPOLIS - Additive fabrication system maker, Stratasys, today introduced a new part support style for the FDM process, called SMART Supports.™

Part supports are temporary structures used during the modeling or production process to support features such as overhangs. This disposable material is also used to fill clearance space between two moving parts during their creation.

The SMART Supports build style is a standard function that is integral to the Catalyst EX 4.1 or Insight 7.0 software upgrades.

The support style is a method of generating supports that uses less material during the part building process. SMART Supports reduces build time up to 14 percent and lowers material cost by reducing consumption up to 40 percent. It also improves the support removal process for many parts, including reducing material removal time.

SMART Supports are a user-selectable option for all Dimension 3D Printers and Fortus 3D Production Systems.

To reduce the material used, the SMART Supports function uses a wide spacing between tool-path rasters and changes the shape of the support region. As the supports descend from the underside of the part feature to the base of the supports, the support region shrinks and transforms to a simpler shape to reduce both the material used and the build time. SMART Supports works similar to classic arch design in architecture, in which columns support layers of bricks that get progressively wider, so that the narrow columns can support a structure much wider and heavier at the top.

Stratasys will continue to offer customers a variety of support style choices, including basic, sparse, and surround.

The SMART Supports build style is not available for the Dimension Elite’s 0.007 inch (0.178 mm) layer thickness option.

All Stratasys customers currently under warranty or maintenance contracts will receive Smart Supports with their Catalyst EX 4.1 or Insight 7.0 upgrades.

NASHUA, N.H — M2 Technologies was named Autodesk Top Reseller in Overall Product Sales Growth for fiscal year 2010. The announcements were made at the annual One Team Conference (OTC), where Autodesk inducted 11 Value Added Resellers (VARs) and Value Added Distributors (VADs) from the Americas into the Autodesk Platinum Club 2010. Autodesk Platinum Club members include channel partners who have excelled in sales, growth and other key measures.

Korean mouldmaker Young Shin Corporation increases machining efficiency with Delcam’s PowerMILL

Moving to shop-floor machining with Delcam’s PowerMILL CAM software has allowed Korean mouldmaker Young Shin Corporation to increase its machining efficiency and product quality.

Young Shine specialises in the manufacture of plastic moulds for LCD televisions. Its main customers include major international brands such as Samsung, Toshiba, Hitachi, Sharp and Panasonic, and many others. Among its many successful projects was the supply of moulds for Samsung’s Crystal range of high-performance televisions.

Despite this good track record, customers such as Samsung and Toshiba wanted Young Shin to reduce the delivery times for its moulds and also to cut its manufacturing costs. One area the company identified for improvement was its CAM system. The existing program was very complicated to use and had many limitations in its range of strategies.

Young Shin contacted Hankook Delcam, Delcam’s joint venture company in Korea, as part of its search for a better programming system. The staff there recommended a move to shop-floor machining, as well as a change to PowerMILL. The shop-floor approach appealed to Young Shin as the company wanted to maximise employee efficiency during their limited work hours, as well as to cut delivery times and improve the working processes.

Following a comprehensive series of machining trials, Hankook Delcam was able to prove that PowerMILL would be the best solution to the challenges at Young Shin. This resulted in an initial order for eight seats of PowerMILL in April 2007. After the successful implementation of this software, further orders took the total to 18 seats of PowerMILL, including two for continuous five-axis machining, plus two seats of Delcam’s feature-based CAM system, FeatureCAM, to generate programs for gun-drilling, and one of the PowerINSPECT inspection software for On-Machine Verification as part of the company’s quality control procedures.

The use of PowerMILL and the switch to shop-floor machining have led to a significant increase in productivity. Previously, the machine operators would often have to wait for many hours to get NC data from the CAM office. These delays have been eliminated now the operators generate their own programs, so shortening the overall production time.

Furthermore, because the operators are very experienced in the latest machining techniques, they are better placed to decide upon the most appropriate cutting tools for each part of the manufacturing process. They have found PowerMILL much easier to use than the previous system and so are able to get the best results from the software. As a result, machining efficiency at Young Shin has increased, the quality of the moulds, and of the products manufactured with them, has improved, and production times have been reduced.

Delcam hosts visit by China Ministry of Commerce

CADCAM developer Delcam was proud to host a visit to its Birmingham headquarters by Director-General Sun Yongfu and a delegation of officials from the China Ministry of Commerce on the 29th March. The delegation was accompanied by senior representatives of the Chinese Embassy to the UK, UK Trade and Investment, the China-Britain Business Council and Advantage West Midlands.

The primary reason for the group’s visit to the UK was to have discussions at senior official level in preparation for the UK-China Joint Economic and Trade Commission Ministerial meeting to be held in Birmingham in autumn 2010. The JETC Senior Officials meeting was hosted by UKTI Deputy Chief Executive Susan Haird. DG Sun also addressed a seminar organised by China-Britain Business Council entitled "New Prospects for China-UK Business Relationship in New Economic Conditions” which was attended by over 100 companies.

Delcam was chosen to be part of the visit because of its growing success in the Chinese market and because of its reputation for world-leading engineering technology. The company’s software sales in the region grew by over 10% last year, despite the impact of the downturn in global manufacturing.

Delcam now has more than 2,000 customers in China. This number includes leading organisations like China First Auto Works, Xi’an Aircraft Industry Group, Changchun Railway Vehicles, Dongfang Electrical Machinery, Gree Electrical Appliances, Foxconn Technology Group, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of mobile phones, and Pou Chen, one of the world’s major producers of footwear, together with hundreds of smaller toolmakers, mouldmakers and subcontractors.

These customers are supported by 30 sales and support offices throughout the country. The Delcam China subsidiary is based in a head office in Beijing, plus regional offices in Shanghai, Shenzhen, Chengdu, Xi’an, Wenzhou, Qingdao and Chongqing. In addition, the Delcam Hong Kong and Delcam Taiwan joint ventures operate two offices each in mainland China, and there are also 18 reseller offices in the country.

VW Group Drives Vehicle Design and Safety Advancements With SGI Supercomputer Installation

FREMONT, Calif - SGI today announced that Skoda Auto a.s., one of Europe’s best known car companies and daughter company of the VW Group, the world’s leading manufacturer of automobiles, has selected SGI Altix ICE to augment its computer-aided engineering (CAE) system.

Being subject to the rigorous emissions standards and safety legislation that defines today’s automotive industry, Skoda Auto’s R&D department requires extreme high performance and scalable computing systems for complex product performance and safety analysis. To meet these technical and compliance requirements, Skoda has selected an SGI Altix ICE 8200 EX supercomputer with 1,024 processors and over 20 terabytes of dedicated hard disk capacity.

The SGI supercomputer installation will be used primarily for computational fluid dynamics analysis using ANSYS FLUENT and OpenFOAM, and for crash analysis using ESI Group PAM-CRASH software. The new system provides Skoda with processing power of 12 teraflops, allowing engineers to reduce processing time, speed automobile development, and improve design efficiency, quality and safety.

HCL Technologies launches Center of Excellence with Boeing

Companies partner to create software critical for flight test.

WALTHAM, Mass — VISTAGY, Inc. today announced that BAE Systems, the premier global defense, security and aerospace company, has upgraded to FiberSIM® 2009 composites engineering software, which will enable the company to take advantage of advanced design capabilities and compress development cycle times as it migrates from the CATIA V4 computer aided design (CAD) platform to CATIA V5. VISTAGY’s professional services organization will help provide a smooth transition by assisting in the development and implementation of best practices for standardizing composites development processes across programs.

BAE Systems has used FiberSIM for more than a decade to design hundreds of highly complex composite parts—including wing skins, intake fairings, fuselage skins and spars—for a variety of aerospace programs, including the Joint Strike Fighter, Eurofighter Typhoon, a variety of Airbus programs and, most recently, for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV).

INUS Releases Inspectworks 2.0 for SolidWorks Users

Seoul, South Korea: INUS Technology has announced the new release of Inspectworks 2.0, offering verification tools for the SolidWorks user. InspectWorks 2.0 is a major upgrade to the company’s SolidWorks plug-in based on Rapidform XOV. Design engineers use InspectWorks along with a 3D scanner to quickly investigate and verify that parts are manufactured to specification from SolidWorks.

Within minutes, anyone with SolidWorks and the InspectWorks Add-in can open a part file and a 3D scan of the object, and see where the part is in or out of tolerance via a deviation color map. If there are dimensions or tolerances defined for the part, InspectWorks also provides measurements and pass/fail results automatically. InspectWorks 2.0 now includes multi-core processor support on the current Windows operating systems (32 and 64 bit on Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7). Enhancements to InspectWorks 2.0 include:

Springboard Biodiesel using Autodesk Inventor to design and manufacture its clean tech solutions

As a result, Springboard Biodiesel doesn’t have to wait for a full product lifecycle to be completed before drumming up interest in its products and staking out market share.

Delcam for SolidWorks CAM system to be shown at EASTEC

Manufacturing companies in the Eastern US will have their first chance to see Delcam’s integrated CAM system for SolidWorks on booth 5322 at the EASTEC exhibition to be held in West Springfield, Massachusetts, from 25th to 27th May. This initial version of Delcam for SolidWorks includes the company’s industry-leading technology for drilling and two- through five-axis milling. Future releases will cover the full range of machining operations, including turning, mill-turn and wire EDM.

Delcam for SolidWorks combines the benefits associated with Delcam’s PowerMILL and FeatureCAM CAM systems. ArtiosCAD delivers greater productivity for users by making design more efficient with easier user features and repurposing capabilities, and interoperability between a number of new 3D model formats.

The new, significant features include:

· Seamless integration with CAPE PACK palletizing software: a layout pallet of die-cut sheets using the ArtiosCAD file can be exported to CAPE PACK, eliminating duplicate data entry and streamlining shipping estimates. Direct connection eliminates the potential for human errors.

· New POP display standards: new POP display standards have been added to the style catalog. Users browsing the POP library will find new parametric design templates from which to either design POP displays in minutes or stimulate the creative design process.

· New 3D imports for Collada, OBJ and Esko flexible bag (.BAG) file types: Collada is a generic 3D interchange file format supported by most 3D applications. It provides interoperability between other EskoArtwork products and third-party 3D products. ArtiosCAD 7.6 also comes with import file formats for OBJ and EskoArtwork flexible bag (.BAG) file types.

· Automatic registration of graphics with structure: along with a roundtrip workflow between ArtiosCAD and Adobe® Illustrator®, ArtiosCAD can deliver registration between CAD and graphics automatically.

· Improved 3D rendering resolution and performance: ArtiosCAD now outputs high resolution graphics for client presentations. The increased 3D performance eliminates the need for additional 3D rendering software.

It opens ArtiosCAD files, allowing our designers to create graphics to the structure of our packaging,” he explains. “When the graphics are complete, we export a PDF file. As soon as we open the PDF file in ArtiosCAD 7.6, the graphics are completely registered to the structural design, seamlessly. ArtiosCAD 7.6 is easier to use because a designer does not need to enter as many keystrokes for many 2D structural design tasks, and new nudge enhancements reduce the time to perform repeat design tasks. Meanwhile, a new hatch catalog allows the designer to dynamically change hatch patterns in designs, dramatically reducing keystrokes. Extended VRML support allows designers to import full assembly structures of products—with the ability to select individual assembly parts around which to build packaging. With the help of Strata Foto 3D, realistic 3D product models can be imported, allowing designers to demonstrate the actual product within the package.

Royal Plastic Buys North America’s First EOSINT P 800 Laser-Sintering Machine

EOS additive manufacturing system will be used to make high-performance thermoplastic parts for aerospace.

Novi, MI — Today EO announced the purchase of one of their EOSINT P 800 systems by Royal Plastic Mfg. (Minden, NE). It is the first sale of this model in North America. Royal will use the P 800 to manufacture high-performance thermoplastic products out of EOS’ unique PEEK HP3 material.

Delcam Chairman reports strong performance

Success in the dental industry helped Delcam to perform strongly.

Delcam Chairman Peter Miles reported today that the company had performed strongly in the face of challenging trading conditions during 2009. Sales at £31.8 million were slightly down year on year but still represented the second-best turnover in the company’s history and stood 7% higher than sales in 2007.

Reflecting Delcam’s decision to maintain its high levels of investment in R&D and to continue to employ the largest development team in the CAM industry, the Group’s profitability declined compared to 2008. "The reduction was in line with expectations and we anticipate profitability moving higher in the current financial year,” said Mr. Miles.

The high value that Delcam’s customers place in its product development was seen in the growing revenues from maintenance contracts. These contributed £10.7m to the 2009 total and showed a year-on-year increase of 10%.

Looking to the future, Mr. Miles commented, "Uncertainty over the timing and strength of the recovery in the global economy continues to make it more difficult than usual to forecast accurately. However, the continued growth of recurring revenues, from annual software maintenance and support income, and the increase in new software sales in the later part of 2009 give us cause for confidence.”

ODA Announces Agenda for ODA World Conference 2010

Phoenix, AZ: The Open Design Alliance (ODA) announces the detailed agenda for the ODA World Conference in Orlando, Florida (USA), May 4 – 5, 2010.

Conference topics include new developments in the ODA platform, advanced topics for all components of the ODA platform, technical implementations by ODA members, member-oriented forums, and future trends in the CAD industry, including the latest developments in SaaS technology, which is expected to have an increased impact on the technical graphics industry.
