ANSYS, Inc and Apache Design Solutions, Inc., a simulation software provider for advanced, low power solutions in the electronics industry, announced today that they signed a definitive agreement whereby ANSYS will acquire Apache for a purchase price of approximately $310 million in cash, which includes an estimated $29 million in cash on Apache's balance sheet. The agreement also includes retention provisions and incentives for key members of management and employees, earned over a three fiscal year period following closing, including an additional $13 million of performance equity awards. When completed, ANSYS currently expects that the transaction will be modestly accretive to non-GAAP earnings per share in its first full year of combined operations.
ANSYS intends to fund the transaction with cash on-hand from the combined organization. The transaction, currently anticipated to close in the third calendar quarter of 2011, is subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals. After the closing, Apache will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of ANSYS.
Apache's software enables engineers to design power-efficient devices while satisfying ever-increasing performance requirements. For example, smartphones continually add functionality to their platforms such as high definition video, GPS, video recording and conferencing with the consumer expectation that battery life will be extended. Engineers use Apache's products to design and simulate efficient, low power integrated circuits for high-performance electronic products found in devices such as tablets, smartphones, LCD televisions, laptops and high end computer servers, to name a few. The worldwide need for smart, energy-efficient electronics has never been greater while engineering challenges continually expand. Solutions to these engineering challenges rely on accurate, predictive simulation software.
The acquisition of Apache complements ANSYS' software solutions by bringing together best-in-class products that drive ANSYS' system vision for integrated circuits, electronic packages and printed circuit boards. The complementary combination is expected to accelerate development and delivery of new and innovative products to the marketplace while lowering design and engineering costs for customers. Integration

Due to the absence at this time of estimates of the acquisition-related impact of purchase accounting adjustments, including the allocation of the purchase price among goodwill, in-process R&D, other intangibles, deferred revenue and equity-based compensation expenses, ANSYS is currently unable to provide GAAP estimates on future earnings. The company intends to provide updated GAAP and non-GAAP financial guidance after the closing of the transaction.

CMC Expands CAE's Role in Automotive Development on Altair's HyperWorks Platform
Altair Engineering, Inc has announced that China Motor Corp. (CMC), a Taiwan-based automotive original-equipment manufacturer (OEM), has significantly expanded its use of HyperWorks computer-aided engineering (CAE) solutions for automobile design and development.
CMC engineers have been using Altair HyperWorks for CAE pre- and post-processing to engineer new automobile designs since 2002. CMC now is extending its use of HyperWorks by employing HyperWorks software structural optimization solutions (OptiStruct), design robustness study technology (HyperStudy), finite element and mechanical systems solvers (RADIOSS and MotionSolve), and the workflow process automation layer.
“The main reason we chose HyperWorks is the open architecture,” said Ju Chen Shing, general manager of the product engineering division at CMC. “HyperWorks allows easy data exchange with other CAE products, which is necessary in the automotive industry. As far as I am concerned, HyperWorks is the best CAE platform for automotive manufacturers.”
The HyperWorks platform provides CMC with both advanced technology and a flexible software licensing model that replaces expensive traditional licensing plans, giving employees access to the HyperWorks suite across organizational and geographic boundaries, as well as to a broad range of complementary third-party programs and other Altair products at no extra cost.
CMC also benefits from the technical support offered through Altair’s close partnership with its Taiwan-based distributor, Alpha Precision Instrumentation Corp. (APIC).

Delcam launch webinars for 64-bit ArtCAM artistic CADCAM software
Delcam will launch the first 64-bit version of its ArtCAM software for artistic applications such as engraving, woodworking and signmaking with a series of webinars on 26th and 28th July and 4th August. 64-bit computers are able to use larger amounts of memory so the new ArtCAM release will enable users to work with much larger and more complex designs. The new release will make all calculations faster, with the most significant benefits being seen by customers that need to produce large 3D signs or that want to engrave items containing very high levels of detail.
The new release also includes a number of new options to enable higher quality results to be obtained. In particular, the quality of text that can be produced has been improved with the addition of a "contour blend” tool that gives centreline-ridged or smooth-domed shapes ideal for engraved-style text. The improved quality is most apparent at any intersections within letters. The same tool will also help with texture effects that intersect or overlap, and for producing complex borders on items like picture frames.
Another significant improvement is in the quality of vectors generated directly from bitmaps imported from 2D drawing packages such as Corel Draw, or scanned from artwork or photographs. With earlier versions of ArtCAM, it could take some time to clean up the vectors but the new release gives much better results that require minimal editing.
Once vectors have been created, it has been made much easier to edit them into exactly the shape that is required. The node editing tools have been enhanced with the ability to move points and automatically produce smooth curves around the shape or to maintain any sharp angles. In addition, mid-points can be displayed automatically on any curve to simplify the creation of more complex geometry.
One of ArtCAM’s most important benefits has always been the ability to create a library of reliefs for use in different designs. This process has been made easier with the introduction of the "cookie cutter” option. This allows the user to define a relief with its vector boundaries, and then cut and paste it between models or into the clip-art library for future use.
The range of standard clip-art supplied with ArtCAM has been extended with an extra 130 reliefs, including architectural, floral, frame and texture examples. For ArtCAM JewelSmith users, an additional 150 components have been added to the component library, with automatic positioning of the collets relative to the shank as they are imported.

Embraer expands use of 3DCS Catia V5-based tolerance analysis software

Dassault Systèmes Launches Version 6 Release 2012
Introduces New Levels of Openness and Lifelike Experience.
Dassault Systèmes announced today the general availability of Release 2012 of its Version 6 platform. Today’s release demonstrates Dassault Systèmes’ focus on delivering an open collaborative platform to its customer base and beyond. It broadens the value of digital assets into new solutions such as immersive retail store experiences and global production system planning.
Understanding the variety of implementation environments in its customer base and beyond, Dassault Systèmes has continued to enable an immersive ENOVIA Version 6 data management experience, now available in CATIA Version 5 and SolidWorks, as well as in Pro/ENGINEER, Inventor, NX, SolidEdge, Adobe Creative Suite, and other solutions. This complements last year’s announcement of hybrid product structures composed of CATIA Version 5, CATIA Version 6 and SolidWorks models to facilitate co-existence and easy transition to a Version 6 environment.
Release 2012 also introduces new interoperability solutions, based on XML schema and Web services, between Version 6 and other PDM systems, offering bi-directional exchanges of 3D design product structures with exact geometry in STEP and CATIA V5 formats. Understanding the variety of implementation environments in its customer base and beyond, Dassault Systèmes has continued to enable an immersive ENOVIA Version 6 data management experience, now available in CATIA Version 5 and SolidWorks, as well as in Pro/ENGINEER, Inventor, NX, SolidEdge, Adobe Creative Suite, and other solutions. This complements last year’s announcement of hybrid product structures composed of CATIA Version 5, CATIA Version 6 and SolidWorks models to facilitate co-existence and easy transition to a Version 6 environment.
Release 2012 also introduces new interoperability solutions, based on XML schema and Web services, between Version 6 and other PDM systems, offering bi-directional exchanges of 3D design product structures with exact geometry in STEP and CATIA V5 formats. New levels of integration between Version 6 and ERP solutions are also now available in Release 2012, enhancing the exchange of product, process, and resource data.
Additionally, CATIA V6R2012 introduces multiple advances in systems engineering, the multidisciplinary design methodology which integrates requirements, functional, logical and physical (RFLP) product definitions. Autodesk, Inc announced Autodesk Vault 2012 software now works with Microsoft SharePoint 2010 and Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 to facilitate access to design information across the enterprise. Autodesk’s data management software works with the Microsoft collaboration platform to simplify business intelligence, content management, search and sharing functions for intranet and Internet sites ― all while building a crucial connection between design teams and an extended business enterprise.

California Department of Transportation Selects Autodesk for Road and Highway Design Projects
One of the Nation’s Largest State Departments of Transportation Transitions to AutoCAD Civil 3D Software for Transportation Projects Statewide.
Autodesk, Inc today announced that the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), one of the largest Departments of Transportation (DOT) in the United States, has selected AutoCAD Civil 3D for road and highway design projects statewide. The contract is over a five year period and includes access to Autodesk’s AutoCAD Civil 3D software, training and services. Civil 3D is part of Autodesk’s broad portfolio of Building Information Modeling (BIM) for Infrastructure solutions, which includes software for planning, designing, building, and managing infrastructure.
California has almost 400,000 lane miles of road and Caltrans manages more than 50,000 of these miles. Developing and repairing this infrastructure strategically, economically, and sustainably requires innovative road design software. Caltrans plans to use AutoCAD Civil 3D software to produce timely and quality plans, specifications and estimates for transportation improvement projects statewide. Caltrans’ decision to move to Civil 3D adds them to a growing list of major transportation agencies—including Wisconsin DOT, Florida DOT, Mass Highway, and Alaska DOT—who have made the move to Autodesk BIM for Infrastructure solutions.

Autodesk Software Helps Carousel Works Bring Back Magic of Wooden Carousels
Autodesk, Inc, has named Carousel Works as the Autodesk Inventor of the Month for June, recognizing the company’s use of Autodesk 3D mechanical design and visualization software to create custom wooden carousels. Carousel Works brings the highest quality of craftsmanship and attention to detail to its old-world designs.
The only company in the world that carves and paints wooden carousels by hand — most companies rely on mass manufactured fiberglass or steel components — Carousel Works is reviving a tradition nearly a century old, and is the first company to design and manufacture wooden carousels since the 1930s. Bringing modern technology into the mix, Carousel Works estimates that Autodesk software helps reduce the time required to complete a carousel by nearly 50 percent.

3D Simplifies Design, Communicates Vision to Customers
Autodesk Product Design Suite, supplied by Autodesk partner IMAGINiT Technologies, helps Carousel Works with nearly every aspect of carousel construction. Inventor 3D mechanical design software plays a critical role in designing the structural framework of the carousel, as well as the mechanical systems that power it. Autodesk Mudbox software provides a digital sculpting environment that assists in the creation of the hand-carved animal figures, some of them as much as seven-feet tall.
The company uses Autodesk 3ds Max Design software to create realistic 3D animations and renderings that vividly illustrate what the carousel will look like when it is fully operational. These images are particularly useful as fundraising tools for projects requiring private funding, and for securing project approval from local stakeholders.

3D Simplifies Design, Communicates Vision to Customers
Autodesk Product Design Suite, supplied by Autodesk partner IMAGINiT Technologies, helps Carousel Works with nearly every aspect of carousel construction. Inventor 3D mechanical design software plays a critical role in designing the structural framework of the carousel, as well as the mechanical systems that power it. Autodesk Mudbox software provides a digital sculpting environment that assists in the creation of the hand-carved animal figures, some of them as much as seven-feet tall.
The company uses Autodesk 3ds Max Design software to create realistic 3D animations and renderings that vividly illustrate what the carousel will look like when it is fully operational. These images are particularly useful as fundraising tools for projects requiring private funding, and for securing project approval from local stakeholders.

Autodesk indicated that it is pleased with global demand levels. As a result, the company is reiterating its second quarter and full year fiscal 2012 business outlook.

Sescoi enhances CNC knowledge of Chinese CAD CAM engineers at Chinese industry shows
Sescoi's booths at the recent Die and Mold China (DMC) exhibition in Shanghai and China International Machinery & Electronics show (CIME) in Ningbo attracted hundreds of visitors and helped to further increase the popularity of its WorkNC automatic CAD CAM software in China.
At the DMC exhibition, Sescoi’s engineers ran open presentations focusing on 5-axis and 3+2 axis CNC machining, providing an overview of WorkNC V21 and the efficiency improvements brought by the CAD CAM software’s easy to use, advanced toolpaths. The intricate Samurai helmet part, milled by a WorkNC customer in Japan, was on display to illustrate what can be achieved with WorkNC.
WorkNC Version 21 is scheduled for release around the globe from summer onwards, and the Chinese industry shows were another chance for local engineers to see the new version, in which 64 bit, parallel processing takes advantage of the latest multi-processor computers to produce calculation speed improvements of up to 70%.
Visitors to the Sescoi booths at the two shows were also able to see WorkNC-CAD HM, Sescoi’s own new hybrid modeler, along with the advanced Wire EDM and Electrode solutions. Sescoi engineers demonstrated WorkXPlore 3D, a high speed 3D CAD viewer which is generating strong interest in the automotive and airline industries for the viewing and sharing of design information.

Z Corporation Technology Cuts Weeks and Thousands of Dollars from Car and Component Development
ZScanning and ZPrinting Streamline Development of Local Motors’ Open Source Custom Cars.
Local Motors, the audacious company bringing mass-customization to the auto industry, is using Z Corporation technology to streamline development of its open source custom cars.
The Phoenix-based company, spotlighted last week by the president, builds limited runs of daringly designed cars “co-created” by its growing community of transportation designers, engineers and enthusiasts. Examples are the Rally Fighter, Boston Bullet, LM Extreme and Green Apple.
“Z Corporation 3D scanning and 3D printing are helping us speed development and lower costs so that we can stay on time and on budget,” said Mike Pisani, Local Motors’ vehicle engineer and lead builder trainer. “We use the technologies for a surprising number of applications and come up with new ones seemingly every day.”
In a visit last Friday to Carnegie Mellon University, President Obama touted a combat support vehicle, designed by the Local Motors community and manufactured in less than 14 weeks, as an example of a bold, new way to innovate: “Instead of having a 10-year lead time to develop a piece of equipment with all kinds of changing specs and a moving target, if we were able to collapse the pace at which that manufacturing takes place, that would save taxpayers billions of dollars. But it also could get products out to the theater faster, which could save lives more quickly and could then transfer to the private sector more rapidly, which means we could get better products and services that we could sell and export around the world.”
Vehicle packaging, reverse engineering, sourcing decisions
ZPrinting and ZScanning help the company quickly develop custom parts, effectively incorporate components into the vehicle “packaging,” and execute special projects on the fly.
For example, for its popular Rally Fighter, the company needed a driveshaft yoke to accommodate its off-road-ready suspension. Pisani’s team purchased the closest-off-the-shelf part they could find and reverse-engineered it. Using the ZScanner® 800, the team captured the surface data from the off-the-shelf yoke, converted it to a SolidWorks CAD virtual model, changed several dimensions, and added connection brackets. The team then used its ZPrinter to print a concept model to ensure proper fit. The physical model included fine detail such as thin splines that connected to the driveshaft.
“The ZScanner and ZPrinter helped us move quickly from concept to final tooling without sending the CAD model out to a machine shop,” said Pisani. “That step would have required the machine shop to go through at least two revisions of tooling and production and would have forced us to go through several redesigns, costing us an extra three to four weeks of lead time and $2,700. This is just one example of how innovative R&D technology can make limited-edition, locally built cars viable.”
Packaging, molds and full-scale car models
Local Motors also uses ZScanning technology for vehicle packaging, which is ensuring all parts fit properly in the chassis. Pisani’s team scanned the gas tank, engine and steering column, incorporating the volumes into the SolidWorks model of the car. In addition to ensuring accuracy, this step also enabled Local Motors to customize connections to the chassis and perform critical ergonomic studies, such as driver/steering wheel interface.
In another instance, the team used ZScanning and ZPrinting to make sourcing decisions on headlights and tail lights. Using data from a late-stage CAD model of a car, they ZPrinted a mold of the front quarter panel, quickly created a fiberglass “positive,” and took the model to a mall parking lot to match it up to mass-market cars.
ZScanning requires no special fixtures to hold the target object, which is free to move during scanning. Scanning is executed in one continuous sweep and generates a single file instead of multiple files that need to be painstakingly sewn together. “You can go into small cramped spaces, get all in one shot, and bring it right into CAD software,” said Pisani.
Cost-effective measures like these enable Local Motors to spend a fraction of what the large automakers spend on developing a car: $2 million to $3 million and 18 months versus $200 million to $300 million and five to seven years.

Open Design Alliance (ODA) today announced the release of version 3.5 of Teigha, its software development platform for engineering applications. ODA also announced two new beta programs for its members.
Version 3.5 Enhancements
Version 3.5 incorporates performance enhancements and a large number of bug fixes donated to ODA by its members, as well as improvements made by the ODA development team. The update includes the following enhancements:
Improved raster image support through the incorporation of the FreeImage raster library. FreeImage is open-source, fast, multithreading-safe, and cross-platform (32- and 64-bit versions of Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X).
Teigha for .dgn files adds support for entity selection and drawing order.

With the release of Teigha 3.5, ODA announced two new beta programs:
Teigha.NET for .dgn Files is ODA’s first .NET API for .dgn files

French National Computer Center for Higher Education Upgrades to PBS Professional 11.0
Latest version of PBS manages thousands of jobs by 1,000 users per day for France’s JADE supercomputer.
Altair Engineering, Inc announced today that CINES¹, France’s National Computer Center for Higher Education, has upgraded to PBS Professional 11.0 to manage its national² HPC system, known as JADE. PBS Professional 11.0 offers petaFLOPS scalability and more than 30 times faster cold start-up and seven times faster job submission than previous versions.
The JADE national supercomputer comprises 2,880 nodes and 23,440 cores, handling more than a thousand jobs per day from a thousand users. JADE hosts a diverse workload of science, engineering and research simulations in climatology, molecular dynamics, computational fluid dynamics, astrophysics, quantum chemistry, material science and plasma physics. PBS Professional 11.0, part of Altair’s PBS Works suite of on-demand computing technologies, monitors and optimizes workload scheduling to enable JADE to operate with optimum efficiency.
CINES, located in Montpellier, France, has provided the nation’s public research community with computing resources and services for more than three decades and since 2004 Long term data Preservation³. The center began using PBS Professional in 2008, when version 9.0 was designated as the resource scheduler for JADE.
Since 2008, PBS Professional has managed the processing of 1 million jobs for JADE. Now employing version 11.0, CINES has joined a growing number of organizations adopting PBS Professional because of its ability to scale to support hundreds of thousands of processors.

OPEN MIND is optimistic about the future
The CAM company OPEN MIND continues on course for growth. The company from the ‘Mensch und Maschine’ Group (MuM) can look back on a positive 2010, which saw not only sales and employee numbers increase but also the company’s global presence. Management has also identified bright prospects for continued success in 2011. The company recorded sales amounting to EUR 10.3 million in the first quarter of 2011, which represents an increase of 9.2 per cent on the same period last year.
According to the ‘NC Software and Services Market Assessment Report’ by CIMdata, OPEN MIND was the only leading CAM software company to continue to grow in the crisis year of 2009. The company’s sales grew even further in 2010. Direct sales for 2010 were increased to EUR 27 million, which represents a growth of approximately 20 per cent relative to 2009. Its presence in regional markets was also further expanded. The company currently employs 180 people and now has 13 subsidiaries all over the world, including the newly founded branches in Sweden and Spain.

SmartCAM V18 Features New Rest-Milling Roughing, Improved Modeling & Toolpath Editing
New Feature-based Holemaking Also Added.
SmartCAMcnc has announced the release of SmartCAM® V18.0. Version 18.0 delivers new and improved milling functionality to the SmartCAM milling suite, and several modeling and toolpath editing enhancements to the entire SmartCAM suite of computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) system software. General release of the software is expected for June of this year.
The SmartCAM product family consists of applications for Computer-Numerical Control (CNC) milling, turning, fabrication and wire EDM. Version 18.0 is built on two central themes: core milling improvements, and core modeling and toolpath editing enhancements requested by customers.
The new Rest-Mill Roughing capabilities, one of three a major core milling improvements in SmartCAM V18.0 milling applications, allow users to easily identify areas of remaining material, then machine those areas using a new Region Rough process. The Region Rough process machines the rest mill regions by automatically switching between profiling and pocketing strategies, depending on whether a region is open or closed. These new capabilities make it extremely fast and easy to re-machine features using progressively smaller tools.
In addition to the Rest Mill Roughing improvements, V18.0 introduces new Feature-based Hole-Making capabilities. Solid model hole-feature recognition has been enhanced to automatically identify compound hole-features, and create corresponding hole-feature elements which include full parametric detail of the hole. A new Hole Making process allows toolpath to be created by applying hole-making tools to a group of hole-feature elements, and automatically determining the start levels and hole depths from the input hole-features. The user has complete control over the hole-feature sequence, and the hole making processes can be modified and regenerated at ay time. These capabilities allow full automation for the creation of hole-making toolpath for common features, thereby saving time and ensuring accuracy and repeatability.
“Our last SmartCAM release focused on solids machining improvements in our advanced milling applications. For V18 we decided to concentrate on core milling functionality that will also benefit our SmartCAM Production Milling users,” said Douglas Oliver, SmartCAMcnc’s Senior Product Manager. “The wireframe rest-mill roughing and feature-based holemaking are fundamental capabilities that will be a huge time saver for all our milling users.”
The third core milling improvement found in SmartCAM V18.0 is a set of enhancements related to the Helical Milling. Helix elements can now be created with left- or right-offset properties, and can be offset during verification and code generation. The Thread Milling process has been enhanced to take advantage of the new helix offsetting capabilities, as well as adding support for single point tools, tapered threads, multiple-side passes, and a user-specified lead extension. Additionally, changes to the code generator provide greater control over the output of straight and tapered spirals. These improvements are in direct response to frequent user requests for improved thread-milling support.
Additionally a number of customer-requested core modeling and toolpath editing improvements can be found in all SmartCAM V18.0 applications, including machinable system fonts, a clip-to-intersection editing tool, improvements to toolpath verification and enhanced geometry layer mapping.
Machinable Geometry from System Fonts now provides a full variety of font choices to the user. When a font is selected, SmartCAM extracts and scales the outline curves of the font and converts it to lines, polylines and arcs for use as machinable geometry.
The Clip-to-Intersection Editing Tool provides a method to split and remove geometry segments with a single click. This feature makes it remarkably easy to convert construction geometry into final part profiles.
Two requested enhancements have been made to SmartCAM's Showpath Toolpath Verification functionality. A new Showpath option allows the verification to be restricted to only the portion of the model within the viewing window, and new configuration settings allow the tool motion speeds to be customized to better match the user’s system capabilities and preferences. These two options allow a more efficient use of this heavily employed feature.
New Layer Mapping and Filtering Options allow better organization of the user’s part geometry when importing CAD data into SmartCAM. SmartCAM layers can be pre-named and specific CAD layers can be directly mapped to SmartCAM layers. Additionally, specified layers not required for the manufacturing process can be filtered out of the import entirely. These features allows companies that use standardized CAD modeling layers to dramatically reduce the number of initial steps required to begin building toolpath for the model.

Trimble Releases Accubid LiveCount Pro On-Screen Takeoff Tool for the Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing Trades
Trimble introduced enhancements to its Accubid® LiveCount® family of on-screen takeoff solutions for mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) trades—a new version of LiveCount and LiveCount Pro, an upgrade tier offering to further refine search results. The software solutions provide contractors with the ability to seamlessly integrate and mark up digital image files to manage the quantification process during takeoffs. This eliminates the need to import and/or export information to either the on-screen takeoff tool or the estimate since they are linked.
The new version of LiveCount offers existing users many reasons to upgrade including the system's ability to create and manage alternate bids, giving contractors the tools they need to create "what if" scenarios. Contractors can also retrieve both length and count in one pass in LiveCount effectively cutting branch takeoff time in half. The LiveCount link to a takeoff can also be broken, providing contractors greater control by allowing manual overrides. This new feature is also shared with the latest update of the Accubid Classic Estimating and ChangeOrder solutions.
In addition to the features found in LiveCount, the new tier offering of LiveCount Pro introduces a unique auto count process, a symbol recognition feature that automatically quantifies like objects in the drawing. The auto count feature also ignores objects that have already been counted and allows the estimator to isolate part of the drawing to be counted. This can speed up takeoff time significantly. The unique ability to refine results as part of the auto count feature also allows contractors to hone in on those results, streamlining the on-screen takeoff process and increasing takeoff accuracy. This process expedites repetitive counting tasks and greatly reduces auto count errors and omissions.
LiveCount Pro can now speed up the project creation process by allowing easy naming and orientation of complex document sets. Imported drawings can be renamed, rotated and reviewed, all at the same time, allowing contractors to set up their projects very quickly.

Cimatron Helps Brazilian Mold Makers Leverage New Government Incentives
Cimatron Limited announced today that it hosted open houses in Joinville and Sao Paolo, Brazil, with the aim of helping mold makers leverage new opportunities in the Brazilian manufacturing market.
The Cimatron Group, one of the seven largest global CAD/CAM suppliers, offers specialized solutions for mold and die makers, as well as solutions for 2.5-5 Axis production milling and turning. The company recently expanded its presence in Brazil by appointing a locally based country manager and recruiting four resellers to serve different regions of the country.
Brazil is a major global manufacturing center, with a significant plastics production industry. In May 2011, the Brazilian government announced incentives to increase the appeal of locally produced manufacturing machinery, opening up new markets and creating a larger pool of potential customers for Brazilian mold makers.
Following the announcement, Cimatron Brazil held two open houses in Joinville and Sao Paolo, aimed specifically at mold makers. The open houses addressed the growing need of local mold makers to deliver high quality molds faster than ever, focusing on how companies in other parts of the world dramatically shorten delivery time using CimatronE. Speakers also offered demonstrations of how CimatronE increases productivity, quality and profitability.
"We were very happy with the turn out and the success of the events in general," said Alex Censi, Cimatron Brazil's country manager. Delcam's FeatureCAM enables move to 3D machining
After adding Delcam’s FeatureCAM feature-based CAM system, Bruce Waugh has been able to move into 3D machining in the one-person machine shop, Waugh Machine, he runs in his garage in Camp Verde, Arizona. Until two years ago, he turned down jobs involving 3D parts because he was unable to program them. Now he can produce any part that fits within the capabilities of his two Haas Minimills.
In addition, the feature-recognition capabilities within the software have reduced the time required to program typical 2.5D parts from one hour to ten minutes.
There is a common misconception that only large companies can benefit from introducing CAM software. Examples like Waugh Machine prove that even the smallest operations can also boost their capabilities and productivity with these systems.
"FeatureCAM has changed the nature of my business,” claimed Mr. Waugh, who has been a machinist for 35 years. "Because I can now do more complicated parts, I have been able to raise my rates while running my machines at full capacity. My customers are more than happy to pay my new rates because I am able to deliver a higher level of quality on more difficult jobs.”
Mr. Waugh’s two main customers are a large medical-device manufacturer and an aerospace subcontractor. "The aerospace manufacturer usually gives me drawings,” he said. "Sometimes these are up to 60 years old.”
"The medical-device company used to give me drawings as the starting point for contract machining jobs,” he added. "One day, the customer told me that it was going to do away with drawings and begin providing CAD files. I saw this as the writing on the wall for 2.5D programming and made the decision to upgrade to FeatureCAM with its feature-recognition and 3D-surfacing modules.”
Mr. Waugh now regularly produces parts with profiling and 3D surfaces. "I get several parts a month with 3D surfaces and I enjoy doing them,” he said. "I also do many parts I could have done in 2.5D in 3D. It may take a bit longer because I use a small ball-nose end mill rather than a larger radius cutter but 3D often lets me produce the entire part with a single tool in a single set-up. This means I can set the machine up and let it run while I do other things such as quoting a job or programming the next part. The ball-nose end mill also provides a better surface finish than the radius cutter.”
FeatureCAM has also substantially reduced the time required to program 2.5D parts. "It used to take about an hour to program the typical 2.5D part,” explained Mr. Waugh. "The automatic feature-recognition capability of FeatureCAM reduces programming time to only about ten minutes. It’s impossible to make this kind of comparison on 3D parts because I was never able to program them before I had the software. Now, I can program 3D parts almost as quickly.”
