The second PLM Standardisation Workshop held on 07-08 June in Munich, Germany took the PLM Governance Standard from Gothenburg as its starting point and looked at what kind of standards structure can be developed to encompass the whole of PLM.
From the discussions it became clear that much of the standardisation does not need to be in the form of complete, formal, regulated standards. PLM managers need best practices to be expressed simply and concisely, and in just enough detail so that they are equipped to take the business or technical decisions they are faced with.
The PLMIG will therefore compile most of the areas of PLM formalisation into a PLM Best Practice Library. This will capture what has been learned in many countries from implementing PLM over the past decade. In concept, the PLM manager reaches a decision point, and looks in the Library for a simple document that indicates the best-practice way forward. Metrics, commercial value, PLM skills and concepts, roadmapping, planning, culture change, and through-life support all belong in the Library, together with detailed best practices for PLM-ERP, PLM-ALM, PLM for SMBs, and advanced PDM techniques.
PLM best practices are applicable in every country, and in any industry. Documenting best practice will help the exchange of PLM experience between the USA and Europe, and clarify the current state of the art. More information about the Library can be obtained by contacting bestpractice@plmig.com.
