COSCO Shipyard Group, Keppel FELS Ltd., Promon Engenharia and Samsung Heavy Industries Receive Annual Intergraph® Awards

Three best-in-class marine engineering companies based in Asia and one of the most respected engineering companies in Brazil have earned the top prizes in the annual Golden Valve and Platinum Pipe Awards customer competitions sponsored by Intergraph®. The awards were announced here this week at Intergraph @ Hexagon 2011, the annual user conference for the Intergraph Process, Power & Marine division and other Hexagon AB businesses.

COSCO Shipyard Group and Keppel FELS Ltd. tied for Best of Show in the Golden Valve Awards Competition – the first tie for the top position in the 11-year history of the art-meets-technology contest. Both images were of semi-submersible drilling ships designed using Intergraph SmartMarine® 3D and rendered with Intergraph SmartPlant® Review. COSCO Shipyard Group, a subsidiary of China Ocean Shipping Company (COSCO), specializes in large vessel building, marine engineering, construction, conversion and ship repair. Singapore-based Keppel FELS is a subsidiary of Keppel Offshore & Marine Ltd., a leader in offshore rigs, ship repair and conversion and specialized shipbuilding. The Best of Show entries were submitted by Gu Xiaogang of COSCO Shipyard Group and the Keppel FELS Ltd. team.

Samsung Heavy Industries (KOSPI:SHI), based in Korea, and Promon Engenharia of Brazil received first prize in the Platinum Pipe Awards Competition for most innovative automation ideas for SmartPlant and SmartMarine Enterprise solutions in the 3D and Engineering & Schematics categories, respectively.

SHI’s winning 3D entry is based on a SmartMarine 3D rule that automatically arranges cable trays and places coaming arrangements. SHI reports that the automation is being used in production and reduces 400 man-hours per project. A SmartMarine 3D user since 2004, SHI has built the world’s largest number of drill ships and has successfully delivered the world’s largest marine platforms and semi-submersible drilling facilities. The entry was submitted by Hong Seo Ahn of SHI.

Promon captured the Engineering & Schematics automation prize by developing a utility to improve SmartPlant P&ID users’ productivity through property grid management. The utility allows the engineer to focus and be presented only with the data and attributes for the task at hand. Promon’s Tiago Alexandre submitted the winning entry. Promon Engenharia is part of the Promon Group. Its activities include design, integration and implementation of complex infrastructure solutions for the power, oil and gas, process, and metals and mining industries.

Gerhard Sallinger, Intergraph Process, Power & Marine president, said, “The Golden Valve and Platinum Pipe competitions highlight the work of thousands of SmartPlant and SmartMarine Enterprise solution users around the world. It is important to note that a record two-thirds of the recipients used either SmartPlant 3D or SmartMarine 3D – our next-generation 3D design solutions.

“The Platinum Pipe entries show the business breakthroughs that can be achieved by using our data-centric, knowledge-based and rule-driven technologies to improve safety, quality and productivity,” Sallinger added. “Intergraph’s SmartPlant and SmartMarine Enterprise portfolios offer the competitive advantage needed in today’s and tomorrow’s process, power and marine markets.”
