Delcam holds first meeting of 8 million Euro project on machining with robots

Delcam recently held the inaugural meeting in Alicante, Spain, of the eight million Euro COMET project funded by the European Commission. As the Co-ordinating Partner, Delcam is combining its experience and expertise in manufacturing with thirteen other technical partners from eight countries across Europe to develop plug-and-produce COmponents and METhods for adaptive control of industrial robots for high-end machining that will enable cost effective, flexible and reliable manufacturing solutions.

The other partners include Nikon (Belgium), ARTIS (Germany), AMRC (UK), TEKS (France), Fraunhofer IPA (Germany), BTU (Germany), Lund University (Sweden), Gizelis (Greece), University of Patras (Greece), N Bazigos (Greece), DemoCenter Sipe (Italy), SIR (Italy) and Nisaform (Czech Republic). The COMET project will impact on high-precision automotive, aerospace, and mould and die applications.

The thirty-month project aims to overcome the challenges facing European manufacturing industries by developing innovative machining systems that are flexible, reliable and predictable, with an average 30% cost-efficiency saving in comparison to machine tools. From a conceptual point of view, industrial robot technology could provide an excellent base for machining, being both flexible (due to their lay-out) and cost efficient (robots cost two to five times less than machine tools). However, industrial robots lack absolute positioning accuracy, are unable to compensate for deviations caused by process forces, and lack reliable programming and simulation tools to ensure right-first-time machining. These three critical limitations currently prevent the use of robots in most machining applications.

Innovations to overcome these limitations proposed by the COMET consortium include an adaptive toolpath-generation system for robots based on kinematic and dynamic models, an adaptive tracking system and a High Dynamic Compensation Mechanism. These innovations will improve robot accuracy, reduce setup times by as much as 50%, and enable precise first-time programming and simulation with real-time correction of the robot path.

According to the coordinator of the project, Jan Willem Gunnink from Delcam, "The COMET consortium contains a unique combination of partners from industry, research institutes and universities who all have an enormous drive to deliver project results to European manufacturing industries. The inaugural meeting already showed a great team spirit and a strong belief in the project goals. With my colleagues in the Management Board of this project, I am confident that these goals can support European manufacturing industries to continue to move forward.”

From January 2011, the website www.cometproject.eu will provide regularly updated project results.

This project is co-funded by the European Commission as part of the European Economic Recovery Plan (EERP) adopted in 2008. The EERP proposes the launch of Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) in three sectors, one of them being Factories of the Future (FoF).

Factories of the Future is a EUR 1.2 billion program in which the European Commission and industry are collaborating in research to support the development and innovation of new enabling technologies for the EU manufacturing sector.

End-users thus benefit from PAM-CEM’s ability to handle fully equipped 3D models, featuring on-board complex antennas as well as sophisticated cable networks.

The 2010 version of PAM-CEM Simulation Suite includes several key enhancements of significant benefit for industrial users, among which there are two major enhancements of special interest to the Automotive and Marine sectors:

– Direct access to the complete electromagnetic environment, beyond the usual computational area, taking into account additional reflecting vehicles and/or obstacles, if any.
– Dedicated High Frequency software tool, relying on Physical Optics combined with Equivalent Edge Diffraction and dealing with aeronautics RADAR applications or Antenna Radiation on-board large sized naval ships.

Near radiated fields for Automotive RADAR
The previous version of PAM-CEM offered a dedicated upgrade to access electromagnetic fields radiated in the so-called “near zone”, i.e. outside the 3D computational domain but not yet in the far zone. With the brand new 2010 upgrade, additional reflecting obstacles or vehicles can be taken into account together. Also, very thin paint bumper coatings that interfere with automotive RADAR devices are treated.

“The introduction of PAM-CEM has allowed us to conduct very precise electromagnetic wave simulations. We believe electronic control systems will be increasingly important in the development of the cars of the future”, declared Yasushi Hamada, Manager of the Electronic Testing and Research Group at MAZDA Motor Corporation.

ESI Releases PAM-RTM 2010

The industrial Liquid Composite Molding (LCM) simulation tool for large and complex components.

Paris: Infusion is a process widely used to manufacture large components such as wind blades or wing boxes. However, determining vent locations and injection strategy is a real challenge for large, complex parts made of different composite materials and inserts and for which the resin flow through the thickness is not uniform. Until now, no simulation tool could accurately manage these large or complex components requiring volumic modeling, costing companies multiple expensive and time-consuming trials to reach a working manufacturing process.

PAM-RTM 2010 is part of ESI’s Composites Simulation Suite of dedicated industrial software for the design, performance and manufacturing simulation of composite components. The 2010 release of PAM-RTM includes a high performance solver enabling Distributed Memory Processing (DMP) computations for Liquid Composites Molding (LCM) process simulation. It covers a wide range of manufacturing processes based on LCM, helping process engineers and designers to quickly and efficiently evaluate manufacturing strategies and optimize process parameters regardless of component size.

Thanks to the DMP solver capability and an optimized graphical interface, components using millions of elements (shells as well as solids) are now treated and, more importantly, simulations can be completed in a matter of hours. PAM-RTM 2010 addresses industrial time constrains with the highest level of accuracy, enabling LCM simulation for very large parts, for complex geometries requiring a detailed mesh and for thick parts in which the non-uniformity of the resin flow through the thickness cannot be neglected. PAM-RTM 2010 is a unique and powerful tool dedicated to industries – including the wind energy and aeronautic sectors – that manufacture complex or high-dimensioned Liquid Composites Molded components.

“Snecma Propulsion Solid (Safran Group) designs, develops and produces solid rocket motors and composite materials for defense, space, aeronautics, and industry applications. Recently, we showed at an RTM conference organized by the PPE (Pôle de Plasturgie de l’Est) some of our achievements in the development of flex-seal cowls,” said Martine Dauchier, R&D Phenolic Ablative Materials Engineer, Snecma Propulsion Solide, SAFRAN Group. “Introducing 3D RTM composite materials for flex-seal cowls led to materials and assembly cost savings. Together with the PPE, using PAM-RTM simulations, we successfully designed optimized RTM processes accounting for the specific reinforcements injected. These flex-seal cowls are now in use on the nozzle of the VEGA P80 Motor.”

PAM-RTM 2010 offers additional enhancements and consolidations of 2009 functionalities such as the automatic injection flow rate control to reduce porosity in the parts and the “one shot” simulation to rapidly estimate the last area to be filled and filling time, the conditional opening and closing of the gates, the influence on permeability of fiber shearing during draping – modules originally developed by the ‘Chaire sur les Composites à Haute Performance (CCHP) of École Polytechnique de Montréal’ – and the advanced draping functionalities for more realistic fiber orientation prediction, among other improvements. All these enhancements provide users with a more rapid decision-making solution for process, part quality and mold optimization.

Among the new functionalities of 2010, two major developments also from the Ecole Polytechnique de Montréal have been implemented:
* automatic determination of the best location of injection ports (based on genetic algorithms);
* Compression Resin Transfer Molding (CRTM) and Articulated Compression Resin Transfer Molding (A-CRTM) process simulation.

“PAM-RTM 2010 release represents a major contribution to ESI’s Composites Simulation Suite with its high performance solver moving back the main limitations of Liquid Composite Molding simulation,” declared Mathilde Chabin, Composites Product Marketing and Business Development, ESI Group. “This version was motivated by a growing need in wind energy and aeronautic industries where the complexity and size of composite structures keep increasing while the highest part quality in less time is required.”

ANSYS 13.0(R): Built for Fidelity, Speed and Power

Latest Software Release Supports Faster Time to Market and Lower Development Costs.

PITTSBURGH - ANSYS, Inc today announced the launch of ANSYS(R) 13.0, the newest release of its engineering simulation technology suite designed to optimize product development processes -- reducing the time and cost needed to foster product innovations.

The advanced technology behind ANSYS 13.0 includes hundreds of new features that make it easier, faster and cheaper for users to bring new products to market, with a high degree of confidence in the ultimate results they will achieve. ANSYS 13.0 delivers new benefits in three major areas:

* Greater fidelity via new solver methods. As engineering requirements and design complexity increase, simulation software must produce more accurate results that reflect changing operating conditions over time. ANSYS 13.0 features an electromagnetic transient solver that produces higher-fidelity results in dynamic simulation environments, among other new features.
* Higher productivity built on an adaptive architecture. ANSYS 13.0 includes dozens of features that minimize the time and effort product development teams invest in simulation. For example, as product designs grow in size and complexity -- and consideration of a single physics is no longer enough -- ANSYS 13.0 makes it easier for users with different engineering specialties to work collaboratively to exchange data and develop real-world simulations that incorporate multiphysics.
* Performance innovation via software and computational power. ANSYS 13.0 can provide speedup ratios that are dramatically greater than previous software releases. Complex multiphysics simulations can be accomplished more quickly and efficiently, speeding up product development and market launch initiatives.

"ANSYS 13.0 builds on the foundation of previous ANSYS releases. It especially addresses user feedback by incorporating valuable capabilities that compress design cycles, optimize product performance across multiple physics, maximize the accuracy of virtual prototypes and automate the simulation process," said Jim Cashman, president and CEO of ANSYS. "The release will create a significant competitive advantage for users, making it easier and faster to bring innovative new products to market -- which has become an imperative in today's economy."

"Red Bull Racing knows a lot about the need for speed. ANSYS helps us move to the next level of racing by empowering us to innovate car designs much quicker, which makes us more competitive race by race. At the end of the day this can help us achieve our goal of winning more races," said Steve Nevey, business development manager at Red Bull Technology.

Fidelity

Improvements in ANSYS 13.0 enhance solution speed and fidelity, offering customers an even greater advantage. The new software release includes solver methods that leverage advanced technology to more quickly deliver accurate answers. For example, in the structural mechanics arena, 3-D rezoning can be used for applications that involve large shape deformations. It allows engineers to stop their simulation as their mesh becomes distorted -- then remesh the material's current state and continue the simulation.

The HFSS(TM) transient solver for dynamic electromagnetic simulations -- such as broadband and radar -- incorporates automatic adaptive mesh refinement and an innovative local time-stepping procedure to accurately represent the geometry and fields while optimizing runtime, stability and efficiency. In addition, a new hybrid solver bridges finite element and integral equation methods for high-frequency electromagnetics problems, making HFSS the first commercial code to have this capability. The technology is ideal for applications that combine simulation over a large distance, such as antennas, with detailed features and complex materials, such as computer components.

For modeling turbulence in fluid environments, an embedded large eddy simulation (LES) solver delivers a faster solution yet maintains accuracy, applying LES to complex areas of interest and faster-solving Reynolds average Navier-Stokes (RANS) to the rest of the solution. ANSYS 13.0 also includes a new fluid dynamics capability for multiple reference frames, which enables engineers to model multiple moving systems simultaneously -- for example, the rotation of wheels as a car moves around a corner.

Productivity

ANSYS 13.0 is built to enhance users' productivity, especially critical when running complex multiphysics engineering simulations. One customer leveraging ANSYS advanced capabilities is Chromalloy, which evaluates gas turbine engine components to determine the effects of various stresses. "Chromalloy needs to evaluate the product designs of compressors or turbine blades based on real-world conditions. That means multiphysics, including fluids, thermal and mechanical/structural. The advances in the newest version of ANSYS software will help us to better understand those forces and to continue to bring the highest quality products to the market," said Page Strohl, structural design manager at Chromalloy.

New process compression capabilities in ANSYS 13.0 will make the work of customers like Chromalloy even more efficient and seamless. The release leverages the ANSYS foundation of open and flexible architecture, resulting in customized engineering workflows that can cut time and costs from the simulation process. An integration with Microsoft(R) Excel(R) enables users to interact with spreadsheets that contain analytic representations of models and parameter table definitions. Other enhancements include an innovative cutcell meshing feature that produces nearly all hexahedral elements on complex 3-D geometry automatically, an external data mapper that imports data in the form of a column text file defining a point cloud, and tighter integration among the Maxwell(R), HFSS and mechanical solvers when performing electromagnetic-thermal-structural simulations.

Performance

ANSYS 13.0 brings a new level of software and computational power to engineering simulation. Power enhancements include a new and unique application of variational technology that reduces solution time by a factor of five to 10 when applied to harmonic analysis. The latest ANSYS release also features greater support for GPU processors, which can be offloaded with complex, time-consuming algorithms to increase both processing speed and accuracy.

The integration of features new to release 13.0 aligns with the ANSYS vision to make multiphysics engineering simulation tools accessible to all who need them. The suite delivers fluid and structural simulation tools for turbomachinery design and analysis, such as cyclic symmetry and multiple moving reference frames; new models for internal combustion (IC) engine applications -- spray, ignition and combustion; and new process and energy industry solutions, including multiphase, real gas, nucleate boiling, and chemical reaction tools. Meshing, element modeling, more-tightly coupled fluid-structure interaction (FSI), nonlinear functionality and other improvements round out the list of new features.

"Based on close interactions with our customers, we have designed ANSYS 13.0 to address their most pressing needs for high-quality, fast and powerful simulation results that boost their product development efforts," Cashman said. "The hundreds of innovative new features in ANSYS 13.0 will make it easier and more cost-effective than ever to apply engineering simulation technology to confidently bring new products to market -- a business capability that becomes more critical every day."

ANSYS 13.0 will be available for customer download later this year.

Economic boom or gloom? It makes no difference to flexible factory engineers

Mid-sized manufacturers, energy providers and plant designers are adopting technologies that help them capitalise on opportunities and productively handle challenging times.

Cambridge, UK : Engineering solutions provider CAD Schroer is headquartered in Germany, with subsidiaries in the UK, US, Switzerland, Italy and France. Despite differing economic outlooks, the impetus for investment in flexible technology for factory design is everywhere.

“News coverage about a big German recovery on one hand, and the insecurity triggered by a UK austerity budget on the other, tends to exaggerate differences, rather than emphasise similarities,” says CAD Schroer’s Managing Director, Michael Schroer. “Yet both countries’ manufacturing and plant engineering sectors are boosted by overseas demand, and their firms accept that technology is a key project enabler. The solid yet flexible engineering organisations that make up our customer base - be they food or energy producers, machinery or plant providers – had their period of austerity in 2009. 2010/2011 is the time for making smart investments which offer quick benefits and good returns.”

MPDS4 FACTORY LAYOUT

Serving a Niche
“Our customers work internationally, and of course they feel the effects of different economic climates. But most of them are experts in their industry, supplying niche products, or engineering services to niche sectors,” explains CAD Schroer’s Product Line Manager Mark Simpson. “They have to plan, design or modify complex installations with a lot of mechanical content. The last thing they need is design software which is difficult to use, administrate or adapt.” CAD Schroer’s niche is the supply of flexible, affordable, and dynamic 2D to 3D plant and factory planning, layout, design, and visualisation software to mid-sized Owner/Operators and process plant providers.

Making the Most of Opportunities
“Be it a German machinery manufacturer gearing up to handle higher demand from Asia; a UK food manufacturer adapting processing lines to produce value ranges; or a design & construction firm progressing from 2D to 3D to be more competitive,” says Mark, “They invest in our software and services because we get projects off the ground quickly, efficiently and cost-effectively.”

From Pre-Sales to Build Order
CAD Schroer’s scalable, modular software allows users to start with conceptual designs in 2D, then progress to detailed 3D design. Parametric, rules- and catalog-driven, it runs on a relational database, storing component definitions in a lightweight format. 3D factories are drawn on demand, generating impressive walk-through visualisations that help win bids, and make it easy to communicate and progress projects quickly. MPDS4 FACTORY LAYOUT can integrate with existing CAD/PLM/ERP/EDM systems and data, and is extremely configurable for niche requirements.

A Head Start with Factory Modelling Services
Along with its software, CAD Schroer often delivers factory layout and modelling services to get Owner/Operator projects off the ground quickly, providing everything clients need to dynamically edit and visualise their existing data, and to plan and cost changes.

Factory Modelling Services

DP Technology Corp., Maker of ESPRIT CAM, Opens New Office in Germany

Taking the next step on its path of continuing expansion, international computer-aided-manufacturing (CAM) industry leader DP Technology, maker of ESPRIT®, has opened a new office in Bamberg, Germany.

“Our business grows as we enhance our reseller and machine-tool partner network,” says Udo Ehnes, European technical manager for DP Technology. Ehnes, who managed DP’s premier German office for 12 years, now oversees its new-and-improved successor.

DP’s new German headquarters, located in the suite of a spacious modern office building in the industrial region of Bamberg — near Bosch, Michelin and Brose — boasts triple the amount of space offered by its predecessor. In addition to its reception area, the new addition to DP’s worldwide offices includes a new meeting room and plenty of space for its eight-member staff — four of whom have been newly hired to support the expanding needs of DP and its clientele.

That staff, which offers sales and support services, can now also offer customers, resellers and machine-tool business partners customized training in its new on-site training room.

As the new office is also close to major roadways and a train station, in addition to several hotels, the new location is tailor-made for convenience.

“We are growing as a reflection of the growth of business in Europe, and especially in Germany,” Ehnes says.

Delcam to consolidate CAM leadership at JIMTOF

Delcam will look to consolidate its position as the world’s leading specialist supplier of CAM software at the JIMTOF exhibition to be held in Tokyo from 28th October to 2nd November. The latest NC Software and Related Services Market report from leading analysts CIMdata showed that, in 2009, Delcam again had the highest vendor revenues of all the CAM-centric companies and so completed a decade as the world’s leading CAM specialist. The company first achieved its global leadership in 2000, when it overtook Japanese developer Hitachi Zosen, and has kept that position ever since. After record six-month sales for the first half of this year, Delcam is expecting to extend its lead when CIMdata’s report on 2010 is published.

The CIMdata report also confirmed that Delcam has the largest development team in the industry, with 165 people working on the company’s CAM software. Only two other companies employ more than 100 CAM developers; Siemens PLM with 121 and Dassault with 110. Furthermore, the company was reported to have shipped more industrial seats of CAM software than any other supplier during the year.

A key factor in the company’s continuing success is its broad range of CAM software. Delcam can offer a CAM system to machine virtually any product, in any material on any type of equipment. No other supplier has such a broad a range of software to increase productivity, improve quality and shorten delivery times in so many applications.

Delcam’s full range of CAM systems is now made up of PowerMILL for high-speed and five-axis machining, FeatureCAM for feature-based machining, PartMaker for Swiss-type lathes and turn-mill equipment, and ArtCAM for routing and engraving. Together, the complete set of programs comprises the world’s most comprehensive collection of machining software; giving Delcam an unrivalled ability to provide solutions to all of a company’s programming needs.

Earlier this year, Delcam further extended its range with the addition of its first integrated CAM system, Delcam for SolidWorks. This new program is already attracting a high level of interest in Japan, where a number of leading resellers have agreed to promote it.

Other highlights of the Delcam stand at JIMTOF will include the 2011 releases of PowerMILL, FeatureCAM and PartMaker. These are expected to attract considerable interest from the existing users in Japan and from the growing number of manufacturing companies in the country that are looking to replace their existing CAM system with one of the Delcam programs.

3D CAD Viewer combined with job shop software delivers real benefits

Sescoi’s WorkXPlore 3D high-speed CAD viewer, and its MyWorkPLAN custom manufacturing system, have enabled Pentaxia Ltd to produce accurate tooling quotations in less than 20 minutes. The rapid response to enquiries is essential to its business as the company, located in Derby, produces patterns and tooling used in the production of composite panels for Formula 1, aerospace and defense applications.

Stephen Ollier, Managing Director of Pentaxia, says, “Motorsport is an extremely fast moving environment with rapid design changes, so our ability to interpret designs, check material prices, and estimate machining times quickly enables us to offer competitive prices, ensure the job is profitable for us, and win more business.” As well as providing a service to several leading F1 teams the company has produced molds for a diverse range of parts including aerofoil shapes, bulletproof doors, components for Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi, and for Roman Abramovich’s Mega-Yacht ‘Eclipse’.

The WorkXPlore 3D CAD viewer enables the company to read in and interrogate designs from a wide range of CAD software. Stephen Ollier adds, “I can examine the model data from many sources myself, without the need to use one of our CAD systems, which would otherwise interrupt our designers. I check draft angles, which helps in 5-axis CNC machining, and calculate block sizes in preparation for producing the quotation in MyWorkPLAN. The ability to load down a trial copy of WorkXPlore 3D was really helpful, making purchase of the software an easy decision.”

By adding MyWorkPLAN job shop software, Pentaxia was able to link the design interrogation into the quotation preparation process. Stephen Ollier says, “Once we have established the block size in WorkXPlore 3D we can use the material prices and the machine rates stored in MyWorkPLAN to calculate the price. Previous quotations can be accessed so that historical information about similar parts can be used. This helps us determine realistic cycle times for each operation, ensuring that we are competitive and that every job produces a profit. Being able to produce these quotations on my own, without waiting for anyone else, is very important to us. We can respond to enquiries in 20 minutes or less and, in our business time is of the essence.”

Once a job becomes an order, the WorkXPlore 3D and MyWorkPLAN quotation information forms the basis of the job documentation. More detail is then added for production, and as manufacture progresses further information is added, for example, job sheets with detailed operations, design revisions, inspection reports, invoices and delivery notes. Stephen Ollier says. “We are ISO 9000 approved and we want to gain aerospace quality approvals. The way in which MyWorkPLAN groups all the documentation for each project in one place is brilliant. It will help us to meet our quality targets, and it enables us to respond straight away to any questions asked by our customers or suppliers.”

The MyWorkPLAN manufacturing software and the WorkXPlore 3D CAD Viewer and analysis software have been designed with ease of use in mind and include tutorials to make operation and installation as simple as possible. Sescoi installed and tailored the software to suit the needs of Pentaxia, enabling it to become productive extremely quickly.

Stephen Ollier adds, “Installation of MyWorkPLAN was completed with hardly any disruption, and we find that it is far more flexible and intuitive to use than our old system. We can enter the documentation cycle at any point, allowing us to short cut many processes, speeding up administrative tasks immeasurably. The software is the backbone of our document and job management, is straightforward for anyone to use, and is a common tool for everybody at Pentaxia.”

Rice Daubney's Fully Integrated ArchiCAD BIM Project is Chosen as the Australian Development of the Year

BUDAPEST – An award-winning design is the first commercial high rise building in Australia completely designed, constructed and handed over as a built model with asset management software using Building Information Modeling (BIM). The Ark Building, the Urban Taskforce 2010 Development Excellence Award winner designed by Rice Daubney, breaks boundaries, challenges traditions, and sets new design benchmarks.

Designed using ArchiCAD by GRAPHISOFT, the development of ‘Ark’ as a fully-integrated Building Information Model began with the consultants and designers, and continued through to the construction of the building. This ensured that the data embedded in the sophisticated BIM model could be used by the client for ongoing asset management and building performance. “BIM helped visualize a complex building design and allowed coordination of structure and services in a highly collaborative environment,” said Mark Shoolman, Project Architect at Rice Daubney.

In addition to its new approach to architectural form, with its dramatic folded shapes, the building excels in environmental terms as well through the use of Tri-generation. The building, which has achieved a 6 star Green Star rating, collects and recycles rainwater.

Conceived, designed, documented, and built using BIM, ‘Ark’ is testimony to the benefits of a true and complete BIM environment – from initial design conceptualization through to the construction process and end management of the building. “BIM continues to change the way our industry works and collaborates; virtual construction is the future and Ark is the first completed commercial high-rise building in Australia where all contractors have truly collaborated using BIM,” sums up Paul Reidy, Director of Design at Rice Daubney.

Rex Van Katwyk, engineer of Taylor Thomson Whitting, the structural consultant firm of the project adds, “This was the first time we used ArchiCAD and we had no issues at all building and sharing the structural model. It proved a very powerful and easy to use package.”

Delcam India celebrates 10th anniversary at Technical Summit

Delcam held its annual Asian Technical Summit in Pune, India, from 19th to 21st October as part of the celebrations to mark the tenth anniversary of the founding of its Delcam India subsidiary. The Summit is held each year to present the latest developments from the company to its leading customers, academicians and the technical media in the region. This year’s meeting, which was sponsored by HP and DMG/Mori Seiki, and supported by Haas, was the tenth in the series and the first to be held in India. Close to 100 delegates attended from 11 countries.

In the last ten years, Delcam India has grown from its initial staff of three to more than 125 employees. The company is based in new, purpose-built headquarters in Pune that cost around $1 million when it was constructed in 2006. It also operates 14 regional offices spread across the country, to support a growing customer base of over 1,200 customers.

The Summit comes at a time when Delcam is on target to achieve record sales this year, having staged a strong recovery from last year’s downturn. 2009 was the worst year in the CAM industry’s history, with overall sales down by 15% according to the latest report from US analysts CIMdata. This sharp decline caused many of Delcam’s competitors to suffer heavy losses, and to reduce their investments in research and development and customer support.

In contrast, Delcam increased its expenditure in both areas and is now reaping the rewards as the business climate improves. As might be expected, Delcam’s sales in Asia are showing the fastest growth in 2010, but the company’s Sales Partners in many other countries are also confident of seeing their best-ever results this year.

The Summit included a presentation by Peter Beckingham, British Deputy High Commissioner in Mumbai, to Delcam’s 35,000th global customer, Southern Spars, a specialist in the design and construction of carbon fibre spars and components from New Zealand.

Other highlights of 2010 reported at the Summit included the receipt of the company’s third Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the Innovation category for the development of design and manufacturing software for dental restorations, and the confirmation from CIMdata that Delcam remains the world’s leading specialist supplier of CAM software, with the largest development team in the industry. Indeed, Delcam continues to increase its investment in research and development, which grew to £5.0 million in the first half of this year from £4.7 million during the same period of last year.

With this increased level of investment, there are always a large number of new products and enhancements to cover during the Summit. This year’s meeting included demonstrations of new versions of all of Delcam’s main software products for design, machining and inspection, together with details on newer products for the healthcare industry, such as the OrthoModel software for orthotics manufacture, and the DentCAD and DentMILL systems for the dental industry.
