Delcam to show PowerSHAPE’s direct modelling for manufacturers at AsiaMold
Delcam will preview a range of new direct modelling options in the 2012 release of its PowerSHAPE CAD system at the AsiaMold exhibition to be held in Guangzhou, China, from 21st to 23rd September. Unlike other programs that have incorporated direct modelling as part of a product design system, the PowerSHAPE options are focussed on design for manufacture, in particular on preparing product designs for the development of moulds and other types of tooling.
"The direct modelling functionality that we have added will enable mould designers to tackle all the common problems that they find in product designs, such as insufficient draft or inappropriate fillet sizes,” claimed PowerSHAPE Development Manager, Ian Watkins. "It is faster to use direct modelling than surface modelling and so can shorten the overall time needed to produce the tools. In addition, we have made the new options as accessible as possible by incorporating into the existing command structure rather than grouping them in a separate area of the software.”
"Together with the extensive data translation and data repair options already available in PowerSHAPE, the addition of direct modelling gives a unique range of capabilities to tooling designers, whether they are working with moulds, press tools or die-casting equipment.”
Many product designers still produce designs with insufficient draft, making it impossible to remove the as-designed part from its tooling. The common nature of this problem is expected to make the ability to add draft to solid models one of the most popular of the new options.
Draft can be added either by using a specific value or by modifying the model interactively. The change can be applied to a single surface or to a group of surfaces, such as the sides of a pocket. In the latter case, the software is intelligent enough to maintain the radii of any fillets linking the sides.
Another common problem for the mouldmaker is the use of impractical fillet sizes by designers. Small fillets require extra machining time so they extend delivery times and increase costs. In addition, they can restrict the flow of material in the mould, so increasing processing times and pressures.
PowerSHAPE can use direct modelling to identify fillets within imported geometry, even when the modelling history has been lost. They can then be replaced with new fillets having more suitable radii.
Material flow problems can also occur when the thickness of items like reinforcing ribs is not sufficiently high. Again, PowerSHAPE can be used to modify the design, either by a specific value or interactively.
The same thickness modification option can be used to add machining allowances before manufacturing, for example when adding material to the split surfaces of a mould or when offsetting surfaces to create electrode designs from tooling designs.
Other features that can be identified within "dumb” geometry include holes, pockets, cuts and bosses. Intelligent manufacturing information can be added to the features and passed to the PowerMILL CAM system. For example, information on the sizes and types of holes can be used for automated generation of drilling programs. These features can be suppressed within the model so that, for example, holes in a surface can be ignored by the machining program until they need to be drilled.

PLMIG Calls for Participation in a Global PLM Benchmark
A major PLM user company ($5bn sales, 16000 employees, operating in 29 countries) has asked the PLMIG to help benchmark its PLM implementation with other real PLM users. If other user companies wish to join in, then the PLM Interest Group will run a collaborative benchmarking project that will take place during the first quarter of 2012.
This will be an international benchmark, on a scale and depth of detail that has never been done before in PLM. It is intended for companies that are seriously interested in quantifying the strengths and weaknesses within their PLM landscape and that are willing to commit time and resources to do so. For its part, the PLMIG will provide the leadership, coordination, benchmarking parameterisation, and full documentation.
The benchmark will provide participating companies with quantified answers about the whole scope of their PLM implementations:-
"What, exactly, is achievable in PLM today, and in the future?"
"How well does our operational set-up support our business strategy?"

Executives needed reports to understand the portfolios of carriers and the reasons they were selling or being rejected.
HiQube now has automated the development of these reports. It replaced the manual process involved in Access with near-instantaneous data retrieval from the SQL database. 4 and 5-Axis Machining
5-Axis machining has key improvements for the roughing of multi-blade components. Rest material settings allow the user to specify if all possible areas should be roughed out with the selected tool or only complete layers should be machined. An intermediate slicing option is also provided with user control over the number of slices and feedrate to be applied; this gives better control when machining the full width cuts as shown in the image.
SWARF machining now has the option to swap the drive curves. There are cases where the toolpath direction is ambiguous and this option allows the component to be machined from the other direction.
3-Axis Machining
The constant Z cycle now has a spiral option to generate a smooth toolpath with no plunges between paths as shown in the image. The toolpath is one continuous motion to give improved surface finish. The spiral toolpath can also be converted to 5-Axis with automatic tilt which will allow shorter series tools to be used.
Projection is now available for surfaces and STL meshes. Radial, Spiral and Offset Curve strategies are supported and these will generate either 3-Axis or full 5-Axis toolpaths.
Simulation
Dynamic sectioning is now supported which is useful for seeing the cross sectional detail on fully or partially machining components such as the example in the image. Improved zooming now allows instant zoom out without the need to recalculate the stock model.
Finally, stock transfer in now supported for Mill/Turn machines with dual spindle capability.

Delcam for SolidWorks wire EDM to be launched at EMO
Delcam will launch the 2012 version of Delcam for SolidWorks, its integrated CAM system for SolidWorks, at the EMO World of Metalworking exhibition to be held in Hannover from 19th to 24th September. The new release will include programming of 2D wire EDM for the first time alongside the comprehensive options for the programming of turning and mill-turn equipment, drilling and two- through five-axis milling. Four-axis wire functionality is planned for the 2012 R2 release, due in January 2012.
Other enhancements will include target-part comparison, the ability to compare a model of the desired final shape with the shape achieved by the programmed toolpaths, and multiple-instance programming, the programming of multiple SolidWorks components in one operation, either in the same orientation or in different orientations.
Fully-automated de-burring and chamfering will also become available to give faster programming of these finishing operations on 2- or 2.5-axis parts. The ability to incorporate chamfers, even when they are not shown in the original SolidWorks model, duplicates functionality previously available in FeatureCAM 2011.
Delcam for SolidWorks 2012 will also incorporate enhancements from the 2012 release of FeatureCAM, including improvements in the use of stock models and new options in the tooling database.

Calypto Design Systems Acquires Mentor Catapult C Synthesis Tool
Calypto Design Systems today announced it has acquired Catapult C Synthesis from Mentor Graphics Corporation (NASDAQ: MENT). The merger of two market-leading electronic system level (ESL) products, Catapult C Synthesis and Calypto SLEC System-HLS verification tool, will create a better integrated ESL hardware realization flow, and enhance the company’s partnership with Mentor Graphics, a leader in ESL technology.
Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. ”ESL synthesis offers our design community the next great leap in productivity. Much like the move to RTL years ago, the move to higher levels of abstraction based on C and SystemC offers the promise of better quality of results in a shorter amount of time. SLEC System-HLS uniquely addresses this challenge with C to RTL formal equivalence checking using patented sequential analysis technology to create an easy to use synthesis and verification flow environment. Designers can perform comprehensive functional verification using SLEC System‐HLS to formally verify equivalence between SystemC ESL models and RTL implementations. This leads to up to 100x speed up times in RTL verification as it removes the need for significant and time consuming RTL simulation to validate that the RTL matches the C or SystemC source. Additionally, the PowerPro SoC Power Reduction Platform can do RTL level power optimizations. Added to the Catapult C Synthesis and SLEC System-HLS hardware realization flow, this allows designers to swiftly go from C and System C designs to power-optimized RTL.

Autodesk Acquires Numenus Ray Tracing Technology
German-Firm Technology to Enhance Autodesk Visualization Capabilities with Interactive, Highly Accurate Rendering Technology.
Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK) announced today that it has acquired certain technology related assets from Numenus GmbH, a software provider of high-end visualization technology used to efficiently render and review 3D datasets. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
Founded in 2009 and based in Koblenz, Germany, Numenus specializes in interactive rendering directly from NURBS (Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines) data to provide instant, photorealistic design renderings for designers, engineers and marketing professionals. As a result of the acquisition, Autodesk software users should gain more accurate visualization of surfaces and spend less time preparing quality visualization data.
“High-end, instantaneous visualization capabilities are a necessity in the world of design,” said Andrew Anagnost, vice-president of suites, Web services and subscription at Autodesk. “Combining advanced ray tracing technology with powerful visual communication tools transforms how designers, engineers and marketing teams consume, review and share visual designs.”

Delcam achieves record sales and increased profits - fastest growth in China, Korea, Indonesia and India
CADCAM developer Delcam has announced that the company achieved record sales for a six-month period and increased profits during the first half of 2011. Sales increased by 13% over the same period of last year to £20.1 million. This continues the rising trend in sales, with the company setting new record levels in each of the last three six-month periods. Pre-tax profits have grown significantly to £1.51 million, an increase of 87% over the first half of last year.
Delcam has been able to take advantage of the continuing recovery in global manufacturing to increase both the sales of new software licences and the take-up of maintenance contracts, especially in the automotive and aerospace industries. The strongest overall sales have come from the USA and Germany, with the fastest growth in sales of new software licences coming from Asia, in particular from China, Korea, Indonesia and India.
Other highlights of the opening six months of 2011 included the presentation of the company’s third Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the International Trade category and the confirmation in the latest report from US analysts CIMdata that Delcam remains the world’s leading specialist supplier of CAM software, with the largest development team in the industry. Delcam continues to increase its investment in research and development. This investment grew to £5.4 million in the first half of this year from £5.0 million during the equivalent period of last year.

Illini Prosthetic Technologies Refines Its Durable and Affordable Prosthetic Arm With Autodesk Inventor Software
Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK), has named Illini Prosthetic Technologies (IPT), a nonprofit organization, as the Autodesk Inventor of the Month for August for the company’s use of Autodesk Inventor 3D mechanical design software in developing a more affordable and more easily fitted prosthetic arm for below-elbow amputees, particularly those living in developing nations.
There are an estimated 25 million amputees around the world, 80 percent of them in the developing world. IPT’s prosthetic arm represents an opportunity for them to regain the use of their limbs, return to work and better care for themselves and their families.
“We believe that we can live in a world where every amputee has access to affordable prosthetic care,” said Jonathan Naber, president and founder of IPT. “Autodesk Inventor software is helping us make that vision a reality much sooner by enabling us to digitally explore and refine our ideas.”
IPT's innovation uses an open socket technology that allows prostheses to be fitted onto patients “off the shelf” and in a matter of minutes, a welcome change to the more traditional lengthy and costly custom fabrication and fitting process. The device comes in a variety of sizes that are adjustable for length, diameter and contour, thus ensuring the best fit for the largest possible range of below-elbow amputations.
IPT was founded in 2008 by six University of Illinois engineering students who noticed that while a number of low-cost prosthetics options were available for leg amputees, arm prosthetics typically remained prohibitively expensive.
Testing Ideas With Digital Prototyping
By creating digital prototypes of its prosthetic arm with Inventor, IPT has been able to streamline its product design process and create working physical prototypes that successfully incorporate and balance affordability, durability and flexibility — all important factors for users in developing countries.
IPT is currently gathering feedback from actual amputees on the most recent iteration of its prosthetic arm, and team members will be traveling to Guatemala later in the year to conduct further user testing — as well as to see the direct impact their device is having on people’s lives.

ESI signs a 5-year strategic cooperation agreement in R&D with AVIC, "Aviation Industry Corporation of China"
ESI Group, pioneer and world-leading solution provider in virtual prototyping for manufacturing industries, announces the signing of a 5-year strategic R&D cooperation agreement with BIAM, the Beijing Institute of Aeronautical Materials from AVIC (Aviation Industry Corporation of China). This agreement entails a very close collaboration between BIAM and ESI, joining expertise in complementary technologies and with the objective of creating a joint research team operating as the Joint Research Center for Digital Technology of Aeronautical Materials.
ESI and AVIC have identified a strategic reciprocal opportunity in establishing themselves as innovation partners. In the presence of Mr. Zhanbin Xu, Vice President of AVIC, in Paris on June 13th, Professor Dr.-Ing, XiaoSu Yi, Director of S&T Committee of BIAM and Dr. Alain de Rouvray, Chairman and CEO of ESI Group, concluded an agreement for the next 5 years that commits both partners to leveraging their mutual knowledge in the field of materials technology through the integration of shared resources, infrastructure and work planning on innovative and collaborative projects.

Altair Engineering Announces HyperWorks 11.0 Workshop Series
Altair Engineering, Inc., a leading global provider of simulation technology and engineering services, has announced its HyperWorks 11.0 Americas Rollout Series, a series of one-day workshops aimed at educating customers and partners on the features and updates in HyperWorks 11.0, the latest version of Altair’s computer-aided engineering (CAE) software suite.
HyperWorks 11.0 was officially unveiled during Altair’s 2011 Americas HyperWorks Technology Conference on June 22. Product highlights include the addition of two new software products to the HyperWorks suite: AcuSolve and solidThinking. HyperWorks 11.0 also offers expanded functionality in the industry leading pre- and post-processors HyperMesh and HyperView, as well as a greatly extended breadth of solver solutions in RADIOSS, allowing engineers to efficiently address today’s complex design challenges.
During the workshops, attendees will receive an overview of HyperWorks 11.0 and learn tips and tricks geared towards increasing efficiency in the workplace. Admission is free, includes lunch and refreshments and the opportunity to engage with Altair application engineers and technical experts for deeper insights into HyperWorks 11.0. The initial rollout workshop held on Aug. 18 in Kalamazoo, Mich., was received positively by local attendees and reservations are filling up for subsequent events to be held in Chicago, Winston-Salem, N.C., and Troy, Mich.

Luxology modo Added to EskoArtwork Packaging Supply Chain Laboratory at Clemson University's Sonoco Institute
Students at Clemson University’s Sonoco Institute are getting hands-on packaging design experience with a multimillion-dollar, state of the art computer lab equipped with the industry’s most innovative tools, including Luxology®’s modo® and its Package Design and Construction Kit (PACK). As one of the key software applications used in Sonoco Institute’s industrial package design course, ‘PKGSC 220’, Luxology’s modo is helping students learn on professional 3D tools and get an edge in the competitive design market.

modo and PACK will play a vital role in ‘PKGSC 220’, an industrial design course that teaches students how to design packaging under realistic production constraints. Students begin the class with a product idea, such as a board game, a cosmetic fragrance, a USB drive, or even an action-figure set, and develop these concepts as they would in a commercial environment, with designs prototyped and specification sheets made ready for production. As the primary modeling and rendering tool in the course, modo is used for both conceptual testing and final graphics production on the packaging design prior to the manufacturing stage. In addition, PACK, a collection of over 200 2D and 3D presets, images and assemblies simplifies the creation of a wide variety of open and closed packaging containers.
“The ability to offer students an end-to-end production capability from virtualization to physical manufacturing is a hallmark of the Sonoco Institute,” continues Hurley. “modo is a perfect complement to our curriculum because it offers a balanced diet of form and function by allowing users to go directly from the software to large CAD/CAM tables and rapid prototypers, and render beautiful images of their designs.
