LEGO engineer uses Hans Schiesser scholarship to study at Delcam

LEGO engineer Thilip Ponnampalam recently spent a week undertaking advanced training in PowerMILL, Delcam’s CAM system for high-speed and five-axis machining, following his award of a Hans Schiesser scholarship. The scholarship can be used by the winner for any training relevant to his work and Mr. Ponnampalam chose to develop his CAM skills at Delcam’s Birmingham headquarters.

LEGO has used PowerMILL for more than ten years in its Prototyping & Tooling Division and now uses thirteen seats of the software to produce the moulds for its LEGO and duplo bricks, as well as for parts for the special characters in its Star Wars, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean and other ranges.

Mr. Ponnampalam has worked in Prototyping & Tooling since March, 2006. During that time he has become so expert in the use of PowerMILL that he carries out regular training in the software for his colleagues. He is responsible for testing all new versions of PowerMILL and for sending feedback to Delcam’s development team in Birmingham.

In particular, Mr. Ponnampalam has become expert in using the macro language in PowerMILL to customise the software specifically to meet LEGO’s needs. The macros he has created make it easier for less experienced engineers to use the software and ensure that they use the optimum milling strategies to machine the moulds. Both these factors allow everyone in the team to improve their output.

The scholarship judges said that Mr. Ponnampalam "possesses a very keen interest in, and knowledge of, many of the technical processes used at LEGO but is unique when it comes to CAM programming. His knowledge of PowerMILL is exceptional and contributes greatly to the efficient manufacture of moulds. This is one of the company’s core competencies and critical to LEGO’s continued success.”

The scholarship was established in 1982 by Borg-Warner Chemicals, GE Plastics BV and Thuesen & Funch in memory of Hans Schiesser, who devoted much of his life to the development of plastic raw materials and plastic moulding technology within the LEGO Group. It supports the training and professional development of young, promising LEGO engineers.

The SoftInWay program for Dusseldorf, Germany consists of 2 independent parts, Fundamental Theory of Axial Turbines and AxSTREAM workshop. All students are given the option to take one or both of these courses, based on their interests and objectives.

Part 1. Axial Turbine Fundamentals (March 19 – 20, 2012)

Axial Turbine Fundamentals is the theory part of the program and covers the fundamentals of thermodynamics, gas dynamics, structural analysis, and basics of steam and gas turbines and their elements. This comprehensive course expands upon the engineers’ existing knowledge base of axial turbine design and operation and helps them refresh and grow from the perspective of professional development and engineering practice.

Part 2. AxSTREAM Workshop (Mar 21 – 23, 2012)

The AxSTREAM workshop part of the program teachers the participants design and optimization of flow paths of turbomachinery equipment using AxSTREAM. During this interactive, hands-on workshop, the engineers will use the AxSTREAM software to successfully perform preliminary design of turbomachinery flow paths, inverse and direct 1D/2D analysis and optimization, 3D profiling/stacking of the airfoils, 3D FEA and CFD, and exporting of results to 3D CAD programs.

The training includes break-out sessions, hands on tutorials, one-on-one design consultation with SoftInWay experts and review of actual test cases. Each attendee can choose a particular track of study based on his/her specific interests.

AlphaCAM Training Team Leader joins Delcam

Paul Richards has joined the training team at Delcam.

Delcam has expanded its training team in the UK with the addition of Paul Richards, formerly Training Team Leader for the AlphaCAM product range at the Planit Group. The appointment comes as Delcam is seeing record demand for training, both from new users at the growing number of companies that are changing to Delcam software and from existing customers that need to be updated in the latest developments in the programs.

"Our sales of new software this year have increased by over 20% from 2010,” stated Delcam UK General Manager, Steve Creron. "This has lead to increased demand for training, both for the operators at our new customers and for additional users at our established customers.”

"We are also seeing more requests for update training following the launch of the 2012 versions of our PowerMILL system for high-speed and five-axis machining and our FeatureCAM feature-based CAM software,” he added. "Customers are keen to learn about the new strategies in the software and how these can increase their productivity and profitability.”

Mr. Richards has more than thirty years’ experience in manufacturing and engineering. He completed his apprenticeship at Joshua Bigwood, an engineering company based in Wolverhampton, and then spent nine years as a manual machine operator.

Mr. Richards’ first experience of CNC milling came following a move to Forth Engineering in 1986, where he worked as a machine operator and programmer using Asquith gantry machines. Three years later, he joined Vickers Defence Systems and spent nine years as a Production Engineer specialising in CADCAM.

Mr. Richards first joined AlphaCAM as a Technical Support Engineer in 1999 before being promoted to Training Team Leader in 2003. He was responsible for development and delivery of training courses at the company, and also undertook on-site training for customers in the aerospace, automotive and autosport industries.

With the Right Tools, Students Engage with Engineering & Manufacturing

PartMaker Looks to Close the "Skills Gap" in Advanced Manufacturing

PTC Announces 2012 Real World Design Challenge Theme "Green Aviation"

Students tasked to optimize the performance of a light sport aircraft.

PTC (Nasdaq: PMTC), The Product Development Company®, today joined more than 45 partners on Capitol Hill to kick-off the 2011-2012 Real World Design Challenge. The theme of this year’s challenge, ”Green Aviation,” was announced today at an event hosted by Senator Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire and the students from last year’s national champion team, the Xavier High School Engineering Club from Middletown, CT representing the state of Connecticut.

Students that participate in the 2011-2012 Real World Design Challenge will work to optimize the performance of a light sport aircraft with the overall design objective to design a plane that will be fuel efficient. As part of the competition, the teams will need to design one of three fuselages of different lengths and then build three different propulsion systems within it - gas, diesel and electric.

The Real World Design Challenge is a national aviation design competition with more than 7,800 high school students run by a public-private partnership with the goal of inspiring interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields and careers. PTC and its partners, including Cessna Aircraft Company and the Federal Aviation Administration are focused on transforming and enhancing STEM education in the American educational system by providing science, engineering and learning resources that allow students and teachers to address an actual challenge confronting one of the nation's most important industries.

According to Druyun, Defense Reform 2001, A Blueprint for Action: Final Report, DFI International 2001, fifty-four percent of the aerospace science and technology workforce is older than 45 with 33 percent eligible to retire today. “There are not enough students in the STEM career pipeline to replace these people,” said Ralph K. Coppola, director, Real World Design Challenge and director, government & strategic education programs, PTC. “These are alarming statistics. PTC is proud to be working with our partners to get students across the country interested in careers in engineering.”

The winning teams from the participating states will be notified in February 2012 and will receive all expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. to compete at the National Challenge Event in April 2012.

“The Real World Design Challenge provides an important opportunity for high school students to learn and understand the challenges that aerospace engineers face every day,” said Michael Humphreys, mathematics and science teacher, Xavier High School. “Programs like this give us the chance to show these teams the exciting technological advancements in aerospace design and give them the opportunity to unleash their creative potential in a real world design scenario.”

Altair Engineering Internship Program to Offer Real-World Experience and Employment Opportunities to Students

Altair will choose two university sophomore students for paid internships.

Altair Engineering, Inc today announced that it will select two engineering students to participate in a paid, two-summer internship program during 2012 and 2013. The initiative is part of Altair’s ongoing internship program that will extend to future years as well, as new students cycle into the program annually.

Those eligible for the internships include engineering students who will be completing their sophomore year in 2012 and are enrolled in ABET-accredited engineering programs in the United States. Altair created the program to enable students to learn the fundamentals of computer-aided engineering (CAE), a crucial discipline for developing simulations that businesses use for designing and perfecting everything from automobiles and airlines to computer chips and golf clubs.

The students will gain the opportunity to work closely with experts at Altair, a high-tech global engineering firm known for its CAE software and consulting services for engineering, computing and business analytics. The company employs more than 1,500 people in North America, South America, Europe and Asia/Pacific. Altair’s HyperWorks is one of the world’s most popular suites of computer-aided engineering software, offering sophisticated capabilities for finite element analysis and computer simulation.

For the internship program, Altair is interested in candidates who are pursuing concentrations in mechanical, civil or aerospace engineering. Students applying for the positions will be evaluated on their desire for computer-simulation careers, aptitude for CAE and academic performance.

The two students who are selected will complete a paid summer internship in the HyperWorks support organization in 2012. They will work with industry customers, project management teams, the HyperWorks sales force and other Altair business units. In the summer of 2013, the same students will return for an internship with Altair’s ProductDesign division, learning how the design process takes place within a simulation-driven engineering project.

Interns who complete the two-summer program will be reviewed for possible fulltime employment at Altair’s headquarters in Troy, Mich., or on-site with one of Altair’s industry-leading customers or partners.

The summer internships complement Altair’s longstanding programs in the educational community that are focused on providing collaboration tools and access to the company’s world-class technology and engineering expertise. Delcam Sales Partner supports student training in the Philippines

A student training programme, the Innovative Solutions Technology Center, has been established in the Philippines in a joint project between Rosco Machine Shop and Delcam’s local Sales Partner, Partmaker Software Sales & Services.

The programme aims to supplement and further enhance the technical skills and practical knowledge of students from the Technological University of the Philippines, Bulacan State University and Don Bosco Technical School in Tondo Manila. It will help improve the quality of the technical graduates they produce so the students can compete locally and globally in terms of skills and experience.

The idea of creating this centre was conceived by Mr. Augusto Uy and his wife Maria Uy, owners of Rosco Machine Shop. The couple recognised the efforts exerted by their employees in helping them grow from a simple backyard operation into a significant business so they began to offer scholarships to deserving employees’ children.

With the company’s expansion, many technical schools and universities in Manila and nearby provinces approached Mr. and Mrs. Uy for on-the-job training of their students. The couple saw the potential in these student trainees, finding them hard working and willing to learn, so they decided to fulfil another dream by establishing the training centre.

The first training sessions covered different conventional and CNC machines, including manual programming using G-codes. Subsequently, the courses progressed into computer-aided technology and, most recently, into multi-axis machining.

The couple became aware of Delcam’s software during the PDMAEC 2009 exhibition in Manila. A simultaneous multi-axis machine that they were planning to buy was on display, machining an impellor programmed using the software. A partnership was established with Partmaker Software Sales & Services and, subsequently, Delcam’s FeatureCAM feature-based programming system became a part of the training curriculum.

The first FeatureCAM training started in August 2010, with 30 students from the three chosen schools. It coincided with a visit by the FeatureCAM application manager, Kyle Kershaw from Delcam USA, who presented certificates to the students. It is planned to continue with at least two courses each year in the software.

"The success of this programme proves that there are still good people who are willing to help and share what they have with those less fortunate than themselves,” commented Belen de la Pena from Partmaker. "It has been a pleasure to work with Mr. and Mrs. Uy on this endeavour.”

Congressman John Tierney and Z Corporation Announce New Education Program Aimed at Skills Crisis

EngineeringZONE Introduces New England High School Students to the Wonder of Making Things.

Despite persistent high unemployment, technical jobs are hard to fill, and the pipeline of American students to fill them is thin.

To help counter this threat to national competitiveness, Congressman John Tierney (D-Mass.) joined 3D printing innovator Z Corporation today in launching "EngineeringZONE™." The initiative invites high school classes to visit Z Corporation monthly for an afternoon to experience some of the latest 3D printing and 3D laser scanning technology, increasingly used in the design and engineering world.

"I applaud Z Corporation's continued efforts to support our local economy with high tech manufacturing jobs, and its most recent initiative to ensure that local students are aware of these new and creative job opportunities," said Congressman Tierney, the only New England Member on the House Education and Workforce Committee. 3D printing, one of the fastest-growing areas of manufacturing, is the creation of three-dimensional physical models from 3D engineering design data much as a document printer creates a business letter from a word-processing file. Jobs available

American businesses often complain about the supply and availability of STEM workers, according to "STEM: Good Jobs Now and for the Future," a report from the US Department of Commerce. And it's bound to get worse. Over the past 10 years, growth in STEM jobs was three times as fast as growth in non-STEM jobs, the report says. STEM occupations are projected to grow by 17 percent from 2008 to 2018, compared to 9.8 percent growth for non-STEM occupations.

On a more positive note, young scientists and engineers have been using Z Corporation 3D printers, called ZPrinters, at thousands of high schools, vocational schools and universities, following the lead of companies like Black & Decker, Cisco Consumer Business Group, New Balance, Timberland and Pixar.

Google approves ArtVPS as a SketchUp Authorised Training Centre

ArtVPS is the first UK rendering software developer to be approved as a Google SketchUp Authorised Training Centre, and one of the few organisations in the UK approved to run SketchUp training courses, following the qualification of two of its team members.

Senior Technical and Support Manager Martin Cox and Sales Engineer Richard Meade at ArtVPS have both qualified as SketchUp Trainers, passing their Authorised Training Centre (ATC) examinations.

In October 2010, ArtVPS launched Shaderlight, a rendering plug-in to Google SketchUp that enables users to transform their 3D models into photorealistic images with ease. As a Google SketchUp Authorised Training Centre, ArtVPS will further support the fast growing community of 3d modelers in architecture, design and education, teaching users how to design, share and present 3D models using SketchUp.

ArtVPS will run a series of online classes to reach users around the world, but will also offer classroom-based training for individuals or groups at their headquarters in Cambridge, England. Starting with SketchUp Essentials, ArtVPS soon plans to add Advanced SketchUp courses.
