OJSC Aviadvigatel Develops Russian PD-14 Engine for the MS-21 Jetliner with Siemens PLM Software's NX and Teamcenter Solutions

NX and Teamcenter Serve as Primary Development Systems for the PD-14 Engine to Help Enhance Efficiency and Reliability, and Lower Operating Costs.

MOSCOW AIR SHOW: Siemens PLM Software, a business unit of the Siemens Industry Automation Division and a leading global provider of product lifecycle management (PLM) software and services, today announced that the new Russian advanced PD-14 engine, featuring low fuel consumption and high performance, intended for the MS-21 mid-range airliner is developed using Siemens PLM Software’s industry leading NX™ software and Teamcenter® software. The PD-14 engine development program, headed by Aviadvigatel, involves leading aircraft engine manufacturers, research institutes and centers that are part of the Unified Aircraft Engine Corporation. The project is implemented with close international cooperation.

The PD-14 engine is a base for a family of turbofan engines based on the unitized gas generator. The engine is designed to meet strict requirements, including exceptional reliability. Fuel consumption is to be reduced by 10 to 15 percent while the operating costs are to be 15 to 20 percent less compared to the existing international counterparts. The PD-14 engine is scheduled to enter the market in 2015-16.

Teamcenter, the world’s most widely used digital lifecycle management system, serves as the digital backbone for the project’s infrastructure to provide a single source of product and process knowledge. Teamcenter has enabled enhanced collaboration between designers and engineers working on the project at different sites. NX, a comprehensive digital product development solution, is being used to design and create digital mockups of the engine. The extensive functionality found in NX supports the integration of mechanical, electrical and electronic components.

“The PD-14 engine development project for the MS-21 mid-range airliner marks a new age for Russian civil aircraft engine production,” said Igor Maksimov, Chief Designer, OJSC Aviadvigatel. “The PD-14 is implemented under a federal targeted program and is a key component of Russian aircraft engine production’s development strategy. Modern design tools, production planning, and data management technologies are among the most important factors for the success of the project. That is why we paid special attention to the selection process of the PLM solutions. Siemens PLM Software’s NX and Teamcenter solutions were selected due to their proven capabilities in the aerospace industry.”

“The selection of Siemens PLM Software for a project that is strategically significant for Russia emphasizes the level of confidence the customers have in our company and in our industry proven technology,” said Victor Bespalov, Country Manager, Siemens PLM Software Russia. “Siemens PLM Software takes great pride in being selected to participate in the development of the PD-14 engine. We are happy that Siemens PLM Software’s technologies and expertise have been selected for this project.”
