London: CD-adapco has announced the release of STAR-CCM+ v5.04, the latest version of its multi-disciplinary engineering simulation tool. This latest release delivers a range of new features across the entire simulation workflow with the latest implementation of over 180 new enhancements requested by our users.
Performance Improvements
“This latest release of STAR-CCM+ improves on the last both with new features helping broaden application scope and also through performance improvements throughout the engineering simulation workflow,” says VP of Product Management, Jean-Claude Ercolanelli. “Having already delivered a set of best in class meshing features that significantly reduce geometry preparation and mesh generation turnaround time, STAR-CCM+ v5.04 now improves on solver time, model handling and manipulation and post processing."
A key enabler of faster turnaround time is the introduction of grid sequencing initialization, which provides the coupled solver with a better initialization state that has been seen to produce a converged result in around half the time previously possible. For the segregated solver, a new pre-conditioned conjugate gradient solver is available to aid scalability and solution speed.
One of the principle benefits of STAR-CCM+ has always been its ability to handle extremely large and complex geometries and version 5.04 builds on this by enabling users to more easily manipulate, visualize and post process their models. This new release of STAR-CCM+ delivers a range of performance improvements that significantly reduce the frame rate for model visualization and show upwards of 50% time reduction for the calculation of post-processing plots.
With the increasing importance of design optimization, the STAR-CCM+ mesh morphing technology has been completely re-written to provide massive gains in performance. The mesh morphing feature is now fully scalable allowing geometry modification for large models and helping deliver what-if studies to our users.

Integrating with our Partners
The benefit of the STAR-CCM+ single integrated environment includes the ability to easily link with specialist third party software. STAR-CCM+ v5.04 both improves the existing GT-power co-simulation capability and also adds the ability to couple to:
* WAVE, the 1D engine and gas-dynamics simulation software from Ricardo,
* OLGA the 1D pipeline flow assurance and well dynamics software from SPT Group.
“The ability to co-simulate with these 1D tools shows our commitment to delivering a product that is not only integrated within itself but also with other tools for the benefit of our users. The addition of the OLGA coupling demonstrates our commitment to delivering a complete simulation tool for the Oil and Gas industry,” adds Jean-Claude Ercolanelli.
Other highlights of this new release
* Extended 3D-CAD functionality: STAR-CCM+ v5.04 provides new sketching and constraints and modeling features such as lofting, sweeping, and patterning
* Multiphysics: This new release adds a new material database with an extended range of materials and properties. The Bai-Gosman model for Lagrangian phase wall interaction, coal combustion with multiple devolatized species and degassing boundaries for Eulerian multiphase flow.
