CD-adapco unveils latest version of industry leading engine simulation toolkit

CD-adapco has announced the release of new versions of STAR-CD and es-ice, which together make up leading industrial toolkit for engine simulation.

“With an ever-increasing emphasis on emissions and energy sustainability – from legislators and consumers alike – challenges for Powertrain teams continue to grow, Whether it’s a new fuel, new combustion model or a new lightweight material, realistic simulation is an integral tool in successfully bringing new technologies to market” said CD-adapco’s Director for the Automotive Industry Dr Richard Johns. “As the long-time leading provider of CFD technology to the automotive industry, with over two decades of intake-to-tailpipe industrial know-how, CD-adapco is fully dedicated to helping our customers to meet these challenges.”

Streamlines through a combustion chamber

Together, es-ice and STAR-CD have become the solution of choice for automotive engineers engaged in ICE development.

STAR-CD V4.12

STAR-CD is replete with physics models specifically developed for efficiently simulating combustion, multiphase sprays and liquid films, heat and mass transfer, transient and turbulence effects, and moving boundaries.

Principle new ICE related features of STAR-CD V4.12 include:

* Extension of liquid property database for fuels and liquids.
* Introduction of Continuous Multi-Component (CMC) approach for modelling multi-component fuel sprays.
* A new sub-grid-scale spray induced turbulence model for LES simulations.
* The ability to use pure oxygenated fuels such Ethanol with ECFM and ECFM-3Z.
* AKTIM ignition model for ECFM-CLEH for ECFM and ECFM-3Z.
* Improved G-equation combustion model.
* Consolidated TIF combustion model.

es-ice V2.16

es-ice automates setting up and running the sophisticated moving-mesh technology required for engine simulation. It automatically produces a parameterized meshed template that can be altered for specific engine configurations.

Enhancements to es-ice V2.16 include:

* Improvements to the meshing engine – including better cell trimming and prism layer definition for the ports of mapped models.
* Added ability to graph the input all 1D input parameters including: initialization, boundary conditions, rpm, piston motion, etc.
* Introduction of apparent heat release (AHR) to es-ice post processing.
* And many others...

“es-ice provides a dedicated environment to set-up and run ICE calculations, encapsulating the process and best-practices that CD-adapco has developed in over 30 years of industry experience,” said Gerald Schmidt, Product Manager for es-ice. “es-ice V2.16 empowers our users to produce the highest quality results in the shortest turnaround time, by automating the simulation process, ensuring consistency and repeatability.”
