World's Largest Optical Telescope Being Developed with Autodesk Vault Software

European Southern Observatory Telescope to Record Images of Earth-Like Planets Outside Solar System.

What do Earth-like planets outside the Solar System look like? The European Southern Observatory (ESO) is in the midst of designing the world’s largest optical telescope with help from Autodesk Vault data management software, among other Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK) solutions, to record images of these planets for the first time.

One of the world’s preeminent institutions for astronomical research, the ESO is currently fine-tuning the design of the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT), which is expected to become operational early in the next decade. The core of the E-ELT is a mirror measuring nearly 40 meters (132 feet) in diameter. This mirror consists of nearly 800 segments each 1.4 meter (about 4.5 feet) across and 50 millimeters thick. The telescope main structure weighs about 2,700 tons. The E-ELT will be capable of gathering 15 times more light than today’s current cutting-edge telescopes — all of which are about 10 years old, with mirrors measuring just 8 to 12 meters (24 to 40 feet) in diameter -- and gather a staggering 100 million times more light than the human eye.

The improvements will enable astronomers to more precisely study primordial galaxies and black holes. The E-ELT’s powerful instruments will also help scientists probe more deeply for organic molecules and water, the essential signs of life, in the planetary disks that surround distant stars.

Ensuring the accuracy and functionality of the E-ELT is of paramount concern to the ESO and will require the coordinated efforts of scientists, engineers, contractors and other professionals over the next several years. Autodesk Vault software helps engineers start the design with a common understanding and allows the numerous individuals involved with the project to generate, examine, compare and update CAD models generated by different teams.

Additionally, ESO designers and engineers use Autodesk Inventor software for 3D mechanical design, product simulation and design communication in conjunction with Vault to keep the team synchronized throughout the design project while collaborating to design critical systems that require extra attention.

“All that perfect light that’s been traveling for 13 million light years gets distorted once it hits the atmosphere in those last few micro-seconds,” said Paul Jolley, head of mechanical and cryogenic engineering for ESO. “The E-ELT will help us re-image this light and study the distant universe like we have never been able to before. Autodesk software is saving us design costs and training time as our teams more quickly and effectively compare and visualize 3D designs.”

The Astronomical Benefits of Digital Prototyping

ESO engineers leverage Autodesk software to design the specifications for the optical system inside the E-ELT. Inventor software is the tool used to help define the “space envelope” around different mechanisms. Autodesk Navisworks software is also being used to help designers and non-CAD users compare multiple CAD drawings, visualize them and check for interferences in 3D.

Autodesk Vault coordinates workflow and translates underlying data models to ensure work proceeds in a timely manner. Although the ESO is a European organization, the E-ELT will be located in Chile’s Atacama Desert, an area subject to earthquakes. Some instruments will operate in cryogenic chambers chilled to 77 degrees Kelvin, or as cold as liquid nitrogen. Housing will also have to be built to accommodate people working on the project and researchers who will later study the universe with the E-ELT. Additionally, the telescope will be inside a purpose-built enclosure that is 86 meters (282 feet) in diameter and 79 meters (259 feet) in height.

“To say that precision is necessary for ESO’s work is a huge understatement,” said Robert “Buzz” Kross, senior vice president, Manufacturing Industry Group at Autodesk. “Minute changes on one aspect of the project can have tremendous repercussions elsewhere, and Autodesk software is helping ESO alleviate the possibility of unforeseen consequences.”

Team ETHOS Uses SolidWorks Design and Simulation for Punkin' Chunkin' World Championship

One of the first ancient siege engines, the catapult, was invented by the ancient Greeks for use in battle. Thousands of years later, Americans in a field in Delaware use those same devices to “chunk” pumpkins in an annual, pulp-filled competition. Many of today’s competitors, like Team ETHOS, have a secret weapon—they use SolidWorks® 3D design software to design and analyze their catapults for optimum performance.

Team ETHOS, a group of hobbyists from Wright Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, uses SolidWorks 3D design solutions to design and simulate their catapult to compete in the Punkin’ Chunkin’® competitions. They use a siege engine relying on torsion, or twisting, power to propel the projectiles. In 2009, the team’s SolidWorks design led to a first place finish in the Adult Torsion Catapult category of the World Championship with a throw of 2,088 feet.

The World Championship Punkin’ Chunkin’ Association (WCPCA) is a non-profit association started in 1986 that hosts the Punkin’ Chunkin’ World Championships, which raises money for scholarships and charitable organizations. The contest has a simple goal: to throw an 8-pound pumpkin the farthest, remaining intact until it hits the ground. In addition to the World Championship, Team ETHOS also competes in a fundraising pumpkin chunk at the Wright Patterson AFB. This year the team’s Phoenix catapult raised $900 for charity with a shot of 2,972 feet, easily winning the contest.

In 2008-9, Team ETHOS re-designed its catapult, now called Phoenix, using SolidWorks software. They started with several designs in SolidWorks and evaluated each design’s manufacturability in the carbon-fiber composite, steel, and aluminum they use to build the catapult. Once they selected the final design, the team performed a stress and dynamics analysis with SolidWorks Simulation to understand how the catapult would function under real-world operating conditions. Any time something in the build didn’t work quite right, the team was able to easily remodel the parts in SolidWorks.

“SolidWorks is integral to everything we do for Phoenix. We use it to virtually test weights, motion, clearances, stress and dynamic analysis,” said David Mollenhauer, senior materials engineer. “It’s a complete game changer for the way we design things. At the same time, the software is very intuitive — I was able to teach myself how to use it.”

The combination of SolidWorks 3D Design and SolidWorks Simulation software allows Team ETHOS to analyze every aspect of the catapult. The team can evaluate force and stress between contacting parts and apply bearing loads, force, pressure, and torque while optimizing the design based on structure and motion. Team ETHOS also works with a CNC machinist, who also donates time, to execute the high-precision aluminum machining for the catapult. SolidWorks drawings are easily translated into a form the machinist can use, resulting in parts that fit the first time.

Delcam urges UK manufacturing companies to maximise tax benefits

UK companies can save money by investing in Delcam software during their current financial year.

Delcam is encouraging manufacturing companies to make the most of changes in the Annual Investment Allowance by investing in new or additional CADCAM software during their current financial year. This could significantly reduce the net costs of their investment since the potential tax savings could be up to £20,625 based on the current marginal corporate tax rate.

The Chancellor, George Osborne, announced changes to the Annual Investment Allowance in his emergency budget on 22 June 2010. For the current fiscal year, qualifying capital expenditure of up to £100,000 by a business can qualify for 100% deduction when calculating taxable profits. CADCAM software and the associated computer hardware will normally be classed as qualifying expenditure. This limit will be reduced to only £25,000 per annum from April 2012.

Sole traders and partners that are paying higher-rate tax have the potential to reduce their net investment by even more as they can save tax at 40%, or even 50%, on their expenditure.

Battery Simulation Module: a pipeline process allows battery set up modifications to be automatically re-executed. STAR-CCM+ v6.06 also allows arbitrary polyhedral meshing for the battery cells and for creating a conformal mesh between posts, tabs, surrounding fluid, mountings, etc. A new sparse solver for electrical solutions is also included. Together these new features provide a significant speedup of solution times.

Materials: a user-defined equation of state for both gasses and liquids gives users full definition of fluid’s behavior in response to changes in pressure and temperature.

Combustion: a Thickened Flame Model for premixed LES combustion artificially thickens flames to allow the flame front to be resolved adequately. Eddy Dissipation Concept (EDC) model for DARS-CFD divides the computational domain into areas where reactions do and do not occur and improves the overall prediction of temperature and species for LES combustion.

Performance

Parallel file I/O: takes advantage of parallel file systems such as Panasas, Lustre and GPFS file systems to greatly improve speed of sim file write. Performance is directly related to number of storage blades available.
Post-Processing

Separation and re-attachment lines: you can now create a derived part to identify areas where the flow has separated from the surface and where it re-attaches, which may be used to seed streamlines and constrained streamlines, etc.

Delcam to show new CAM programs in Indonesia

Delcam will show new versions of its PowerMILL, FeatureCAM, PartMaker and Delcam for SolidWorks CAM systems at the Manufacturing Indonesia exhibition to be held in Jakarta from 30th November to 3rd December. Back boring allows more parts to be completed in a single set-up, with larger bores able to be produced on the reverse side of the part. Spiral roughing can be used instead of Z-level roughing. Dassault Systèmes to Acquire Elsys

Version 6 as the Convergence Platform for Generative Schematic Documents and 3D Smart Product Definition.

Dassault Systèmes today announced the acquisition of Elsys, an innovative provider of interactive electrical engineering and disruptive multi-discipline generative schematics solutions. Elsys generative technology enables the automatic creation of millions of 2D schematics from functional-logical master data, thereby eliminating the tedious, costly, and error-prone process of interactive manual creation of schematics.

With the Version 6 (V6) collaborative platform, customers across industries are creating smart products to run lifelike experiences. These smart products rely on electronics, electrical or fluidic systems to provide ever more advanced functions. In this context, the goal of the Elsys acquisition is to provide a unique solution allowing Dassault Systèmes customers to associate schematic documents to the real product’s behavior. Dassault Systèmes Reports Strong EPS Growth and Operating Margin Expansion in Third Quarter

Dassault Systèmes (Paris:DSY) (Euronext Paris: #13065, DSY.PA) reports IFRS unaudited financial results for the third quarter and nine months ended September 30, 2011. These results were reviewed by the Company’s Board of Directors on October 26, 2011.

By region, revenue growth was highest in Europe during the third quarter reflecting several multi-brand transactions in the automotive, high tech, energy and industrial equipment sectors.
New licenses revenue increased 7% (IFRS and non-IFRS) in constant currencies and reflected a strong comparison base to the year-ago period where new licenses revenue increased 54% in constant currencies.
Recurring software revenue rose 12% (IFRS) and 10% (non-IFRS) in constant currencies reflecting growth in maintenance from higher new licensing activity and strong maintenance renewals and rental licensing.
IFRS PLM software revenue increased 11% in constant currencies. Non-IFRS PLM software revenue increased 9% with CATIA software revenue higher by 7%, ENOVIA by 10% and Other PLM by 16% which includes SIMULIA and DELMIA as the largest components. (All growth comparisons in constant currencies.)
SolidWorks (Mainstream 3D) software revenue increased 11% in constant currencies on both an IFRS and non-IFRS basis. New SolidWorks commercial seats licensed in the third quarter increased 11% to 11,748 seats.
Earnings per diluted share and operating margin increased significantly on both an IFRS and a non-IFRS basis, reflecting principally revenue growth and operating margin expansion. IFRS earnings per diluted share increased 35% to €0.62. Non-IFRS earnings per diluted share increased 18% to €0.77 and non-IFRS operating margin increased 400 basis points to 32.0%.

2011 Nine Month Financial Summary

IBM PLM operations acquired by Dassault Systèmes have been merged into the Company’s operations within its PLM business segment since April 1, 2010. As previously disclosed, the IBM PLM share of Dassault Systèmes software revenue was estimated at approximately €50 million for the 2010 first quarter.

IFRS total revenue increased 18% and non-IFRS total revenue increased 17% primarily driven by software revenue growth of 19% (IFRS) and 17% (non-IFRS), respectively, and by services and other revenue growth of 9%. (All figures in constant currencies.)
By region, revenue growth was well balanced across Europe, the Americas and Asia.
IFRS and non-IFRS Software revenue growth reflected new licenses revenue growth of 22% in constant currencies and double-digit growth in recurring software revenue.
Specifically, recurring software revenue increased 17% (IFRS) and 15% (non-IFRS) in constant currencies benefiting from growth in maintenance from new licensing activity, high renewal rates and the IBM PLM acquisition and growth in rental licensing.
IFRS PLM software revenue increased 21%. Non-IFRS PLM software revenue increased 19% with CATIA, ENOVIA and Other PLM all growing by 19%. (All figures in constant currencies.)
SolidWorks software revenue increased 13%. New SolidWorks commercial seats licensed during the first nine months of 2011 increased 18% to 35,769 seats. (All growth figures in constant currencies.)
Net income per diluted share increased 39.8% to €1.65 (IFRS) and 22.8% to €2.05 (non-IFRS) per share. IFRS operating income increased 48.1% to €292.2 million and the operating margin improved to 23.0%. On a non-IFRS basis, operating income increased 27.8% to €374.7 million and the non-IFRS operating margin expanded 320 basis points to 29.5%. The strong increase in earnings per share on both an IFRS and non-IFRS basis was driven by revenue growth and operating margin expansion offset in part by higher income tax expense for the 2011 nine-month period.

Cash Flow and Other Financial Highlights

IFRS net operating cash flow increased to €101.1 million for the 2011 third quarter, compared to €51.1 million in the year-ago period. IFRS net operating cash flow increased to €382.4 million for the 2011 nine-month period, compared to €316.7 million for the 2010 respective period. During the 2011 third quarter, the Company received cash of €19.9 million for stock options exercised and completed share repurchases in the amount of €54.4 million to offset share dilution from the exercise of options in connection with the 2011 expiration of several major ten-year stock option programs.

The Company’s net financial position, comprised of cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments less long-term debt, was €1.04 billion at September 30, 2011, compared to a net financial position of €845.7 million at December 31, 2010. The Company’s cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments totaled €1.33 billion and long-term debt was €289.2 million at September 30, 2011 compared to €1.14 billion and €293.4 million, respectively at December 31, 2010.

Sensable announced that custom facial prosthetics, custom dental and maxillofacial implants, as well as custom surgical guides, created with its Freeform® 3D modeling and design system will be spotlighted at the 2011 American Association of Maxillofacial Prosthetics annual conference starting this Saturday, October 29th in Scottsdale, Arizona. MSC Software Announces New Release of Adams

Adams 2012 introduces a new user interface and capability extensions for systems and event simulations.

MSC Software Corporation today announced Adams 2012. This release of Adams delivers an all-new user interface and new model browser that simplifies model setup; new automatic flexible body generation to support efficient, high-fidelity system modeling; and an innovative tire model to complement the improved selection of standard events and road profile formats available for vehicle simulations.

The release will be available at the end of November.

All-new User Interface
The Adams 2012 user interface provides a new ribbon-style format and intuitive layout. The new ribbon offers improved labels, thereby making model construction easier and more user-friendly. Engineers will find the main toolbox and build menu functions in a series of tabs for model entity construction, simulation, and post-processing actions, and icon strips are located on the main menu bar and status toolbar.

A new pre-processing model browser has also been implemented in Adams 2012, providing an improved means to navigate models within Adams/View. This is especially helpful in understanding the content of newly-inherited models from colleagues or business partners. Engineers will experience improved model navigation, especially for large models, convenient right-click access to non-graphical entities, dynamic search and savable filters, and improved visualization and model control.

Automatic Flexible Body Generation
The Adams 2012 release introduces a new Adams/ViewFlex module that enables users to create flexible bodies without leaving the Adams environment and without the dependence on external finite element modeling (FEM) or analysis (FEA) software. The feature is powered by embedded MSC Nastran technology and run wholly in the background of the Adams session. This improves productivity and facilitates high-fidelity modeling.

Enhanced Solver for Speed and Robustness
The improved C++ solver in Adams 2012 is now the default solver for all Adams products, including Adams/View and Adams/Car. The Adams C++ solver provides modeling and simulation capabilities not found in the FORTRAN solver, such as Nonlinear BEAM and FIELD formulations, flexible body contact, clearance measures, an exact linearization algorithm, a bisection method in the Adams/Controls system import option, support for delay differential equations, and parallel processing.

Automotive Vertical Enhancements
Adams 2012 introduces new tire and road enhancements for Adams/Car where higher-fidelity road simulations can be performed. A new Tire 3D enveloping contact model is available to capture more realistic tire forces over small obstacles. Visualization of roads is now faster and more consistent with the simulation code, thereby enhancing a user's ability to understand vehicle behavior and improve visual presentations.

New vehicle events have been added to Adams/Car including Straight-line Maintain, Straight-line Braking on Split μ, and Static Vehicle Setup, which includes Mass Distribution for Corner Weights, Toe and Camber Alignment, and Ride height Adjustment. These new features provide users with a better selection of events, enhanced productivity and ease of use. In addition to continued momentum in our Desktop (MCAD) business, which experienced 17% year-over-year revenue growth, our Enterprise (PLM) business delivered very strong results with non-GAAP revenue up 39% year over year and 21% on an organic basis. We also continue to see robust adoption of our PLM solutions, as is reflected in our 20% and 30% year-over-year increases in organic maintenance and services revenue, respectively. Overall, we delivered 27% total non-GAAP revenue growth compared to the year ago period." On a constant currency basis, total non-GAAP revenue growth was 20% and license revenue growth was 18% when compared to Q4'10.

"Our momentum in the PLM market continued with the addition of 3 new strategically important ‘domino' accounts during Q4," Heppelmann continued. "Since 2009, we have won 30 domino accounts, meeting the target we had set at the beginning of the year. Dominoes represent the largest of many competitive displacement opportunities, and we believe they demonstrate that PTC is gaining share and becoming recognized as the industry leader for both our technology and product development process expertise."

Heppelmann added, "We had 30 large deals (recognized license + services revenue of more than $1 million) in Q4'11, capping off a strong year in which we had 103 large deals, up from 70 in FY'10. We believe this is an indicator of the strength of our pipeline for business opportunities with new and existing customers. During the quarter we recognized revenue from leading organizations such as Asustek Computer, Caterpillar, Doosan Infracore America, SMS Siemag, Webasto and ZF Friedrichshafen."

Jeff Glidden, chief financial officer, commented, "From a profitability standpoint we had a very strong quarter; we delivered $0.47 non-GAAP EPS, this despite a $0.02 headwind due to a higher-than-expected tax rate, other expense items and currency effects. Non-GAAP EPS was up 47% from $0.32 non-GAAP EPS in Q4'10. We ended Q4 with $168 million of cash down from $261 million at the end of Q3, reflecting in part $50 million used to repay our revolving credit facility, $15 million for stock repurchases, and $15 million for the acquisition of 4CS."

Outlook Commentary

"Based on the market momentum we are seeing, the strength of our pipeline, our increasing sales capacity, major product releases in our core markets, as well as the significant interest we are seeing in our other products, such as Abortext and Integrity, we continue to be excited about our long-term growth opportunity," said Heppelmann. "While we acknowledge that there continues to be uncertainty about the strength of the global economy, we remain committed to achieving our goal of 20% non-GAAP EPS CAGR through 2014."

Glidden commented, "For Q1, we are providing guidance of $305 to $320 million in revenue, which includes approximately $20 million in revenue from the MKS and 4CS businesses, including $2 million in non-GAAP revenue. We are expecting non-GAAP EPS of $0.28 to $0.32, which at the mid-point is an increase of 36% from $0.22 non-GAAP EPS in Q1'11, reflecting our commitment to driving operating leverage in our model. From a revenue perspective, we are expecting approximately $80 to $95 million in license revenue in Q1, with combined services and non-GAAP maintenance revenue of approximately $225 million, resulting in approximately 14% to 20% year-over-year growth in total non-GAAP revenue." For Q1, the GAAP revenue target is $303 to $318 million and the GAAP EPS target is $0.14 to $0.18.

The Q1 guidance assumes a non-GAAP tax rate of 24%, a GAAP tax rate of 20% and 121 million diluted shares outstanding. The Q1 non-GAAP guidance excludes approximately $2 million for the effect of purchase accounting on acquired MKS deferred maintenance revenue, $13 million of stock-based compensation expense, $9 million of acquisition-related intangible asset amortization expense, any acquisition-related expenses, and their related income tax effects.

Glidden concluded, "Looking to the full year FY'12, we are targeting non-GAAP revenue growth of 14% to 15%. We expect MKS and 4CS to contribute approximately $90 to $100 million in revenue for the full year, including $3 million in non-GAAP revenue. We expect MKS and 4CS to be slightly accretive to FY'12 non-GAAP EPS. We are expecting license revenue growth of approximately 20%, services revenue growth of 14% and non-GAAP maintenance revenue growth of 11%. Our FY'12 non-GAAP EPS target of $1.48 to $1.52 reflects incremental sales expense as we continue to ramp sales capacity. We will continue to balance investments to support future growth with our commitment to 20% non-GAAP EPS growth." For FY'12, the GAAP EPS target is $0.94 to $0.98.

The FY'12 targets assume a non-GAAP tax rate of 24%, a GAAP tax rate of 20% and 121 million diluted shares outstanding. The FY'12 non-GAAP guidance excludes approximately $3 million for the effect of purchase accounting on acquired MKS deferred maintenance revenue, $51 million of stock-based compensation expense, $37 million of acquisition-related intangible asset amortization, any acquisition-related expenses, and their related income tax effects.
