Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ:ADSK) has acquired certain technology-related assets from T-Splines Inc., a privately-held surface modeling software company, based in Utah. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
“The technology acquisition will strengthen our Digital Prototyping portfolio with more flexible free-form modeling and will help achieve even closer integration between industrial design and engineering workflows,” said Buzz Kross, senior vice president, Manufacturing Industry at Autodesk. “T-Splines technology will benefit designers and engineers that require watertight surfaces for downstream analysis and manufacturing.”

This transaction is expected to have no impact on guidance issued on November 15, 2011.

TDS Selects MSC Software's Marc for Nonlinear Analysis
Technik und Design Systementwicklung (TDS) will use Marc to analyze seals and evaluate design alternatives for customers.
MSC Software Corporation announced that Technik und Design Systementwicklung (TDS) has selected MSC Marc at its choice for nonlinear analysis. TDS is an engineering services company based in Ingolstadt, Germany, and focused on the development of seals and doors. TDS has expertise in the area of interior door panels and equipment of car bodies.
TDS has traditionally only focused on design and development work using computer-aided design (CAD) software. However, the company will now begin to integrate numerical simulations into their development processes. The company's goal is to shorten development cycles, and do more goal-oriented structural optimization studies early in the design process.
"So far we've outsourced simulation jobs, or our customers have done their own analyses. However, we want to collaborate with our customers from the very first concept idea to the final manufacturing," said Ulf Nestler, Director of TDS. "Therefore it's necessary that we build the complete development process chain in-house. By doing the modeling and analysis in-house, we can answer critical questions about the durability of our designs. We want to be able to independently judge which design alternative will be the best choice."
TDS has selected Marc because of its capabilities in advanced nonlinear structural analysis, contact, complex material models, and multi-physics. Crucial to TDS's decision to invest in Marc was the well-engineered Marc software technology, and the very robust numeric algorithms Marc uses to solve nonlinear problems. TDS plans to perform structural analysis of elastomeric components for seal profiles. These requirements include large deformations, complex contact and critical friction conditions, temperature and time dependant, as well as incompressible material behavior.
With Marc's analysis capabilities, the engineers at TDS can solve very complex and high degree nonlinear mechanical-structural, thermal, thermal-mechanical coupled problems, as well as problems in the areas of multi-physics like electrostatics, magnetostatics, electromagnetism, and piezoelectrics.

COMET robot machining consortium meets at Fraunhofer

The COMET project consortium held its 5th General Assembly meeting at the Fraunhofer IPA in Stuttgart, Germany, from 24th to 25th November. Coordinated by Delcam, the COMET project is now in its second year, focusing on applying the previous year’s research and development on real-world machining tests, bringing manufacturing solutions that are cost-effective, flexible and reliable.
Prior to the meeting, the COMET consortium held its Exploitation Strategy Seminar with guidance from the European Commission representative, Mr.Mauro Caocci. The outcome of the COMET project should be able to be successfully applied in European manufacturing industry when the project ends in February 2013.
The experiments performed in the seven robot cells established by the COMET project have produced valuable data for machining with robots and highlighted the issues that may occur. The development of the COMET tracking system and high dynamic compensation mechanism, and the integration of these technologies with the programming and simulation environment is now under way.
During the meeting, the consortium visited Fraunhofer IPA, a leading research institute in the field of robotics and automation. The institute is focused on robot deployment and automated production processes, as well as the development of robot systems and their key components. In partnership with the Lund University, IPA is the main developer of the high dynamic compensation mechanism and its control systems.

Jan Ramboer, Research Programme Officer, who represented the European Commission at the meeting, remarked: "For a successful European Project you need good communication, flexibility and most importantly a passion for the work. PLMIG publishes the first ever PLM Governance Standard
The PLM Interest Group announces the release of the first ever PLM Governance Standard that can be applied by companies of all sizes as a methodology for integrating board-level and operational PLM.
The Standard has been developed by the 2011 workshop series in Gothenburg, Munich, Milan and London, and is a distillation of best-practice PLM management and oversight at all levels of a company. It gives the CEO and VPs clear visibility of PLM throughout the enterprise, and provides the PLM Team with a natural mechanism for meeting the Board's requirements.
The Standard does not rely on restrictive rules, and does not require extensive documentation of procedures. Care has been taken to keep it simple, lightweight and accurate.
This is a landmark for the PLM industry because, although there are various existing standards that impact on the PLM space, this is the first standard that applies purely to PLM. It is intended to be followed in the same way as other international standards, and may lead to more structure and cohesion within the PLM industry as future standards are developed to support it.
The PLM Governance Standard is published this week as the Q4 2011 issue of the PLM Journal.

Dassault Systèmes Announces Isight 5.6 for Simulation Automation and Design Optimization
Dassault Systèmes announced the availability of Isight 5.6, the market-leading open desktop solution for simulation process automation and design optimization from SIMULIA, the Dassault Systèmes brand for realistic simulation. Isight 5.6 includes enhancements in optimization, modeling and simulation integration, and postprocessing.
Isight provides designers, engineers and researchers with an open system for integrating design and simulation models—created with various CAD, CAE and other software applications—to automate the execution of hundreds or thousands of simulations. Isight allows users to save time and improve their products by optimizing them against performance or cost metrics through statistical methods such as Design of Experiments (DOE) or Design for Six Sigma.
“Isight has features and add-ons that allow us to integrate all of the different codes and interfaces used for our physics subroutines,” said Cosimo Chiarelli, head of the Aeromechanics and Propulsion unit in Business Segment Space Infrastructure and Transportation at Thales Alenia Space Italia in Turin. “It played a key role in helping us unify our processes and saved a considerable amount of time in our design optimization process.”
Among the new features for design optimization, Isight 5.6 provides a reliability analysis technique for importance sampling that allows users to compute and sample around the most probable point of failure in a design. When compared to sampling around the mean value point, importance sampling requires orders of magnitude fewer evaluations for the same accuracy in predicting the probability of failure or success. This is especially important in the verification of high-reliability systems, such as jet turbines or automotive brakes.

Sigmadyne's latest release of SigFit™, an optical pre & post processor for MSC Nastran, allows optical response quantities to be written in MSC Nastran input format. This allows MSC Nastran's optimization capability to utilize optical behavior in the structural optimization of optical systems.
Optical performance is degraded by the distortion of reflective and refractive surfaces, and the characterization of such deformations is essential to performing optical performance evaluation. The best-fit polynomial characterizations of the predicted distortions of such optical surfaces can be generated by SigFit in the form of MSC Nastran multipoint constraint (MPC) equations. This feature allows engineers to characterize deformed optical surfaces within MSC Nastran using polynomial types commonly used in optical design. These equations now include enhancements to expand their usability to a wider array of applications involving significant lateral surface growth making them accurate for thermo-elastic load conditions.
Many modern telescopes include deformable mirrors to correct for unwanted optical surface figure errors induced by thermal or structural loading. A common design problem is to determine the optimum number and locations of the actuators required to correct these figure errors. MSC Nastran can be used to determine predictions of the disturbed optical surfaces and the influence functions for a large set of candidate actuator locations.
SigFit also provides many other options to use MSC Nastran in the analysis of optical systems. SigFit takes MSC Nastran analysis results and writes their effect in native formats for direct input to a variety of optical design programs. Examples include the temperature and stress changes in the index of refraction, including stress birefringence. Autodesk Inventor Helps Bring Greater Energy Efficiency for Building Retrofits
Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK) has named UK-based Green Structures as Autodesk Inventor of the Month for December 2011, citing the company’s use of Autodesk Inventor software and a range of other Autodesk Digital Prototyping technology in transforming the way energy systems are planned, designed, constructed, maintained and operated within the built environment.
As a member of the Autodesk Clean Tech Partner Program — an initiative that provides Autodesk Digital Prototyping software to emerging and established clean tech companies for a small fee — Green Structures has rapidly created award-winning energy efficiency systems, particularly in the areas known as passive heat recovery ventilation and thermal energy storage.
The firm’s latest innovation, a heat recovery ventilation system called Ventive, works with existing chimneys to channel air and heat. This system contrasts with current mechanical heat recovery ventilation systems, which require that complex ductwork be installed throughout an entire building. Ventive can be installed in less than 30 minutes, providing a far faster and less expensive alternative for retrofitting buildings with the latest green technologies.

GE Scientists Decorate the Christmas Tree With 3-D Printed Ornaments
Scientists at GE Global Research are back in the holiday spirit. As an encore to the redesign of Santa’s sleigh and construction of a state-of-the-art “Toy Lab” for Santa and the elves, researchers are bringing high-tech manufacturing to Christmas tree decorations to ring in the holiday season using additive manufacturing techniques.
Additive manufacturing, or 3-D printing, is the practice of building up material to directly form a net-shape product rather than forming a product by traditional methods such as forging, casting or machining material away. For GE, it is providing new degrees of product design freedom and the opportunity to reduce the time, cost and use of materials that go into making our products.
The 3-D printing process is highlighted in a new video posted to Global Research’s You Tube channel. Juan Pablo Cilia, a Rapid Prototyping Specialist at GE Global Research, takes you through the entire process step-by-step from his initial design drawings on the whiteboard to a computer-aided design (CAD) that is the blueprint used to print the ornament itself. Delcam's ArtCAM speeds ice bar production
Using Delcam’s artistic CADCAM software, ArtCAM, has reduced greatly the amount of time needed by Peter Fogarty of Fire and Ice Creations to create ice carvings, including complete bars cut from ice.
A recent project for La Bodega Tapas Bar and Grill, in Regina, Saskatchewan, highlighted the savings. Each year, the restaurant has a sculpted ice bar on its patio from the last week in November to the third week in March to raise money for the Transition House, which helps women and children affected by domestic violence. In 2007, Mr. Fogarty spent ten days manually designing, cutting and assembling the ice bar, which contained logos for ten corporate sponsors. In 2010, using ArtCAM and a CNC ice router, he designed and cut logos for a much more complex ice bar, built from forty blocks of ice with twenty logos, in only seven days.
"I saw ice carving for the first time at a demonstration in 1977 and I was hooked,” Mr. Fogarty remembered. He started Fire and Ice Creations in his garage while he continued his distinguished culinary career but, in 2007, moved into ice carving full time. The company has built an impressive list of achievements, including sculptures for the 2007 Juno Awards, Canada’s main music awards, and a replica of Saskatoon’s 25th Street bridge used for a sushi display at the International University Congress.
The following year, Mr. Fogarty began computerising his ice-carving operation and by 2010 he was producing nearly all of his carvings using ArtCAM and the CNC ice router. "I selected ArtCAM because of its ease of use, particularly in converting existing artwork from clients and sizing, positioning and mirroring logos,” he said. "Another enormous benefit of ArtCAM is that it combines with the CNC ice cutter to cut out the logos faster and more accurately than was possible in the past.”
For the 2010 ice bar, Fogarty received electronic versions of the logos from the ice bar sponsors. "ArtCAM made it easy to produce the files needed to drive the ice cutter,” Mr. Fogarty claimed. "It greatly reduced the amount of time required to size, position and produce a mirror image of each of the logos, which was required because they were cut out of the back of the ice block.”
Another benefit was that the assembly took only six hours, half the time required in the past, because all of the pieces were cut so much more accurately that no additional cutting was required on site.

The following year, Mr. Fogarty began computerising his ice-carving operation and by 2010 he was producing nearly all of his carvings using ArtCAM and the CNC ice router. "I selected ArtCAM because of its ease of use, particularly in converting existing artwork from clients and sizing, positioning and mirroring logos,” he said. "Another enormous benefit of ArtCAM is that it combines with the CNC ice cutter to cut out the logos faster and more accurately than was possible in the past.”
For the 2010 ice bar, Fogarty received electronic versions of the logos from the ice bar sponsors. "ArtCAM made it easy to produce the files needed to drive the ice cutter,” Mr. Fogarty claimed. "It greatly reduced the amount of time required to size, position and produce a mirror image of each of the logos, which was required because they were cut out of the back of the ice block.”
Another benefit was that the assembly took only six hours, half the time required in the past, because all of the pieces were cut so much more accurately that no additional cutting was required on site.

Delcam has extended its range of dental scanners with the launch of its DentSCAN scanner. The new unit is slim, light and accurate to 20 microns, making it ideal for use in dental laboratories that need to design restorations either for in-house production or for supply to milling centres for manufacture.
The DentSCAN scanner uses the latest generation of white-light 3D scanning technology to give both fast and accurate data capture. This is combined with precision calibration and articulation equipment to provide high-precision scans for the design of all types of restoration, from simple copings to anatomical crowns and bridges.
DentSCAN also has the ability to capture data from deep cavities, allowing dental impressions to be scanned as well as stone casts.

Z Corporation today announced it will sponsor "Reality Redesigned," a student-focused design competition and online reality show that will spawn daring new mountain bike designs created by inventive riders.
The show bills itself as "the ultimate design contest ... what happens when the biggest names in North American manufacturing, design and engineering throw open the doors and allow both mountain bikers and designers alike to have at it." In addition to entertainment, the episodes will serve as solid curriculum material for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) teachers across North America.
The contest will spotlight the design process from drawing board to finished product.

Dassault Systèmes announced the availability of Isight 5.6, the market-leading open desktop solution for simulation process automation and design optimization from SIMULIA, the Dassault Systèmes brand for realistic simulation. Isight 5.6 includes enhancements in optimization, modeling and simulation integration, and postprocessing.
Isight provides designers, engineers and researchers with an open system for integrating design and simulation models—created with various CAD, CAE and other software applications—to automate the execution of hundreds or thousands of simulations. Isight allows users to save time and improve their products by optimizing them against performance or cost metrics through statistical methods such as Design of Experiments (DOE) or Design for Six Sigma.

This is especially important in the verification of high-reliability systems, such as jet turbines or automotive brakes.

Altair Engineering Opens High-Powered Data Center to Support Cloud-Based HyperWorks On-Demand
New center in Troy, Mich., will manage large-scale high-performance computing jobs for customers.
Altair Engineering, Inc., today announced the opening of an exceptionally high-powered data center in Troy, Mich., this month to house and manage its growing HyperWorks On-Demand cloud-based computer-aided engineering (CAE) solution for customers who rely on high-performance computing.
HyperWorks On-Demand (HWOD) is a high-performance computing (HPC) solution for design innovation in the cloud. HWOD leverages Altair’s patented licensing system, providing access to Altair’s HyperWorks CAE software and a modern, scalable HPC infrastructure through a secure and efficient Web-based platform.
The data center enables Altair to scale HWOD up to more than 10,000 cores for computer simulation projects. In fact, it can support as many as 150 large-scale engineering solver jobs running simultaneously, employing Altair’s solvers RADIOSS, OptiStruct and AcuSolve along with other tools in the HyperWorks family of simulation software.
“Companies often turn to HyperWorks On-Demand because they have outgrown their internal capacity or do not have the resources internally to manage high-performance computing equipment,” said Altair Chief Information Officer Martin Nichols. “HyperWorks On-Demand provides all our HyperWorks products as a cloud service, and this data center allows us to scale up to provide much larger on-demand clusters for our customers.”
Unlike most other cloud services, HWOD provides true HPC for its end users. This means that customer simulations – which can require substantial resources and can run for several days – are run as fast as possible.
HPC requires extensive infrastructure in addition to just the computers. Things such as backup generators, uninterruptible power supplies, water-cooling capabilities, systems administration, operators, and high security are all necessary elements that are often out of reach for many small and midsized engineering departments. Companies gain access to a robust, resilient and secure HPC environment when they use the HWOD services that will be hosted in the new data center. Thanks to its domain expertise and sophisticated cloud stack, Altair can also provide turnkey and configurable private cloud solutions, offering all the efficiency and flexibility of HWOD completely within the customer’s firewall.
The data center is a scalable, modular facility that can be easily extended internally and has the capability to be interconnected with similar adjacent modular facilities in the future.

The data center is situated about 3.5 miles from Altair’s headquarters and incorporates extensive physical and cyber security measures. It is monitored inside and outside by video surveillance, night-vision cameras and sensors. Firewall devices protect data both entering and exiting the facility’s computing equipment.
Construction of the data center was completed this week, and Altair is in the process of expanding its current HWOD capabilities to be relocated to the new facility within the next month. The expanded HWOD will be fully up-and-running in the new data center by early 2012.

The data center is situated about 3.5 miles from Altair’s headquarters and incorporates extensive physical and cyber security measures. It is monitored inside and outside by video surveillance, night-vision cameras and sensors. Firewall devices protect data both entering and exiting the facility’s computing equipment.
Construction of the data center was completed this week, and Altair is in the process of expanding its current HWOD capabilities to be relocated to the new facility within the next month. The expanded HWOD will be fully up-and-running in the new data center by early 2012.

1. PLM adopts the cloud - With the recent release of new cloud-based PLM technologies from Dassault Systèmes and Autodesk, companies have a growing list of options for transitioning to cloud-based PLM systems. This, coupled with cloud-based energy savings and the potential to reduce cost of software ownership, will likely draw more companies to these solutions.
"In 2012 we will see a number of firms start exploring cloud-based PLM solutions, particularly small to midsize companies in industries like consumer packaged goods (CPG) that tend to be more green-conscious," said George Young, a founding and managing partner at Kalypso.
2. Social innovation practices get less cloudy - In Kalypso’s recent study on how social media is impacting innovation and product development, almost half (46 percent) of surveyed companies admitted that they are not sure which approaches work. Over one-third (36 percent) said they are challenged by a lack of internal expertise or best practices to follow.
"In 2012 we will see more clarity as organizations find tangible ways to take advantage of the power of social computing platforms to transform the way products are developed," said Bill Poston, a founding and managing partner at Kalypso. "Some companies will be dipping their toes into the field of social technologies and product development for the first time, while others will be developing more targeted strategies and metrics systems for their social product innovation programs.
3. Shift to emerging markets continues - Recent research reports indicate that as high as 40 percent of companies plan to shift foreign investments from developed to emerging markets in the upcoming years.
"With this shift in investment to emerging markets, we plan on seeing a large spike in ‘reverse innovation’ – developing products specifically for breakthrough markets," said Poston. "Furthermore, these products will then be at price points that are attractive to developed markets."
4. PLM becomes ubiquitous in consumer packaged goods industry – CPG companies have traditionally lagged behind other industries in adopting PLM to drive innovation, despite an industry focus on product and process innovation. However, critical industry factors over the last several years, such as supply chain and raw material cost fluctuations and regulatory compliance, have caused a shift in the industry that has led to an influx of CPG companies adopting PLM as a core business process.
"Over the next 18 to 24 months, PLM will cease to be a competitive advantage in CPG," said Young. "Just as ERP was a competitive advantage at first, we're going to see the same thing happen with PLM in CPG."
5. Failure to keep consumers safe leads to criminal prosecutions – As numerous product recalls have demonstrated over the last several years – most recently with this year’s cantaloupe recall – product quality and safety issues can result in much worse things than lost revenue. Particularly in the world of food and beverage product safety, manufacturing executives who fail to meet regulatory standards may face jail time.
"The recent criminal prosecution of executives from the New Jersey-based dietary supplement companies QLF and ASN is just the start of criminal prosecutions for violating food or beverage safety," said Young. "As we look ahead to 2012, we expect to see at least one large food company put in jail for this very reason."

QuEST Global partners with Gogte Institute of Technology to offer Computer Design and Analysis Courses

MSC Software's Patran to be used at Shipyards Worldwide for Strength Assessment
MSC Software Corporation today announced that CSR Software LLC, a joint venture company created by Lloyd's Register of London (LR) and American Bureau of Shipping of Houston, Texas (ABS), has successfully implemented a Patran-based module to be used at shipyards worldwide in the strength assessment of large double hull oil tankers and bulk carriers.
The custom user interface built with MSC Software's pre & post processor Patran, developed for CSR Software by DHL Consulting of Londonderry, New Hampshire, is written completely in Patran Command Language (PCL), which comprises 22 customized forms and some 25,000 lines of PCL code to support CSR modeling verification and results evaluation.

ESI Group, pioneer and world-leading solution provider in virtual prototyping, today announces the acquisition of Swedish company Efield; European specialist in electromagnetic virtual simulation solutions.
Founded in 2006, Efield has developed a set of solutions for virtual simulation of electromagnetic emissions of electric or electronic installations or devices, with the objective of assessing electromagnetic interference or disruption. These solutions, originally aimed at the aeronautical and defence sectors, are quickly becoming essential for the increasing proportion of manufactured products that incorporate mechatronics or electronic components.
Based near Stockholm in Sweden, Efield is represented by resellers in Europe and Asia (Japan, Korea, India and China). It employs only 5 people but has a prestigious client base that includes Saab AB, BAE Systems, Ericsson and the China Helicopter Institute.
This acquisition supplements ESI Group’s current electromagnetic offering, and addresses a fast-growing and increasingly regulated sector; one that is important because of the growing use of electronics in manufactured products.
Acquisition of Efield furthers the drive of ESI Group towards diversification; in industry, with presence in aeronautics, electronics and defence, and in international distribution, through direct presence in Scandinavia.
The transaction is for 100% of Efield’s capital and is effective as of 9th December 2011. The company’s annual revenue was approximately 0.4 million euros in 2010, with significant proportion from repeat sales to existing clients.

Sona College of Technology adopts Tekla BIM technology as part of curriculum
The Tamil Nadu based institution joins the group of over 200 universities globally.
Tekla India, the Indian arm of Tekla Corporation; announced today that Sona College of Technology, a renowned educational institute based in Tamil Nadu will include Tekla’s suite of 3D Building Information Modelling (BIM) software, Tekla Structures as part of its academic curriculum for engineering students. The college will train civil and structural engineering students at its School of Industrial & Engineering Technologies. With the implementation of Tekla Structures in academics, students will be able to visualize and simulate real-life construction project workflows and receive hands on training and rich experience.

2011 VAR Stars have a practice involving the sales of mid-market financial software and while most derive significant revenue from other sources, accounting software is the core to their business. Revenue is not a factor in selection and VARs are not rated. All members on this list have equal standing. Factors taken into consideration included growth, industry leadership and innovation.
