PCI BIM Committee Presents the Benefits of openBIM to the Precast Industry

Nemetschek Vectorworks, StructureWorks, Tekla and Nemetschek Scia Team Up to Demonstrate Interoperability.

The Precast Concrete Institute's BIM Committee, along with software developers Nemetschek Vectorworks, Nemetschek Scia, StructureWorks and Tekla, presented a new integrated model based workflow for the precast industry that promises to streamline the design and production of precast structures. The effort was coordinated by Chuck Eastman, Professor and Director of the Georgia Tech Digital Building Laboratory, and Rafael Sacks at the Technion, and their teams.

The presentation, which took place at the 2011 PCI Annual Convention and National Bridge Conference, illustrates the benefit of openBIM and how the Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) file exchange is allowing architects, engineers and precast manufactures using preferred software applications from multiple vendors to leverage today's BIM process to increase efficiencies, reduce errors and ultimately deliver higher performing precast structures.

"The demo is just an initial stepping stone to deal with all the major exchanges facilitating precast workflows," said Eastman. "We expect other companies aspiring to support precast work will be joining later."

This educational session demonstrated how a design model created by an architect using an IFC-capable BIM authoring application can be imported into a structural analysis software for optimization and code checking. This optimized IFC model can then be moved downstream and converted into a detailed precast fabrication model. The parts and Bill of Materials of the fabrication model can be used as the inputs into the fabrication process and ultimately to manage the scheduling and project completion on the job site.

Eiji Shibata wins Good Design Award 2011

Product designer Mr. Eiji Shibata won a Good Design Award for the design of TRINITY DRIVE’s handbike. Designed with Vectorworks, this handbike is a big hit in Japan and has been featured on a variety of TV programs, as it realizes a physically challenged person’s dream of riding a stylish bike and moving comfortably around town.

After testing the original concept with physically challenged persons, the design was modified and the weight of the bike was reduced. As a matter of fact, our own CEO, Sean Flaherty, had the opportunity to test drive the bike while visiting A&A, our Japanese distributor, last year.

Successful data exchange: Certified CAD project template for North Rhine-Westphalia

Nemetschek Allplan is now offering a further certified CAD project template for successful data exchange with government clients. For architects and civil engineers, this will considerably simplify collaboration with BLB NRW, the owner of almost all the North Rhine-Westphalia federal state's properties.

Nemetschek Allplan developed a new project template in close collaboration with BLB NRW: By taking advantage of it, Allplan users can exchange building projects and data in compliance with BLB NRW's specifications – at a certified level of quality. Simple and automatic functions

The project template is installed via automatic setup. The project template contains a predefined layer structure as well as Allplan wizards, and has default settings for the most important elements such as layers or format properties. All settings meet the BLB NRW specifications and guidelines. A file carries out export; smooth assignment during conversion to AutoCAD is therefore guaranteed. In addition, the project template contains information on the respective organization and the related specifications.

The following elements have been certified: File formats for drawings, layer structures and layer structure layout, blocks with attributes, texts, text styles, fonts, dimensions, 2D elements and objects, user coordinates system, model area, layout area, colors, line types and widths, plot styles, hatchings, scales, units, drawing frames and labels, base point and room definition via IFC 2x3.

Nemetschek Vectorworks, Inc. and MAXON Computer GmbH have announced the winners of the Inspired Visions Global Rendering and Animation Competition.

"This competition shows the impressive results users can achieve in rendering Vectorworks models within Renderworks and/or CINEMA 4D," explains Dave Donley, Rendering Manager at Nemetschek Vectorworks, Inc. "We are continuing to work on technologies which further strengthen this partnership."

"We are extremely pleased with the results of this competition," says Friederike Bruckert, Director of International Sales at MAXON Computer GmbH. "The winners invested a great deal of passion and energy into their entries, which serve as an inspiration to aspiring and seasoned designers."

There were a large number of entries from around the world, with the most submissions coming from Germany, U.S., Belgium, Switzerland, and Italy. All valid entries were evaluated by a jury and a panel of judges, and a "Fan Favorite" was chosen by public vote. The winner in each category will receive a $2,500 USD Visa gift card. The winners are:

CINEMA 4D Animation Winner: "Modern uboot-kitchen" by Sina Grage. Grage was a student in northern Germany at the University Muthesius Kunsthochschule Kiel, and she now works for Feuerpfeil Design GmbH in Hamburg.
Judges' summary: This well-modeled animation was especially creative in its use of colors, textures and lighting. The possibilities of the elements in the animation were also presented in an easy and convincing manner.


CINEMA 4D Rendering Winner: "Dinner @ Panorama Tower" by Lmcad Estudios de Animacion. Located in the Dominican Republic, this firm specializes in architectural renderings and animations.
Judges' summary: This CINEMA 4D Rendering is breathtaking. The designer combined extraordinary detail, excellent lighting, and depth-of-field control to create a sense of hyper-realism that makes it difficult to distinguish from a photograph. The placement of a colorful, out-of-focus image on the wall of a largely monochromatic space, and the careful use of shiny, subtly-colored textures in the table objects and furniture, create an attractive image of elegance and comfort.


Vectorworks® Renderworks® Winner: "Soundstone - house of music - Render for a Master thesis" by Nicolai von Stromberg. Stromberg is a student at the Georg Simon Ohm Hochschule in Nuremberg, Germany.
Judges' summary: This simple rendering delivers an interesting, fashionable atmosphere. Through the use of color and composition, this design achieves a humanistic look.


Fan Favorite Winner: "Floating Olympic Village" by Julian Finke & Lena Dietrich, University of Applied Sciences, Detmold, Germany.

Enhanced 3D modeling: The software now examines the model under the cursor and sets the working plane automatically, removing the general need for users to manually set working planes. This planar autosensing is also the basis for the new 3D dimensioning feature. Other 3D modeling features include instant access to push/pull functionality after profile object creation and also reshape improvements.
Improved Building Information Modeling (BIM) capabilities: The new stories feature allows design layers to be dynamically and vertically referenced to named story elevations. Story-aware objects like walls, columns, slabs and stairs can span across stories and update with story elevation changes. Plus, improvements to wall component joining, insulation fills, spaces, stairs, walls and windows all increase the ability to design intelligently and efficiently. Enhancements to Vectorworks Architect 2012 software also further strengthen Nemetschek Vectorworks' commitment to interoperability. Support of the open BIM file standard, Industry Foundation Classes (IFC), has been greatly improved. IFC import now has higher-fidelity geometry from imported elements, and IFC space objects are translated into native Vectorworks space objects.
Integration of building and site: Vectorworks 2012 software marries building and site design and is the first package to combine a complete BIM modeler with extensive Geographic Information System (GIS) capabilities (available in the Vectorworks Architect, Landmark and Designer applications). Now users can store georeferenced information on each Vectorworks design layer, transform geometry to a different map projection or georeferenced coordinate system and enjoy improved shapefile import and export functions.
Best integrated renderer: Improvements to the Renderworks rendering application include the introduction of Renderworks Styles, which can be re-used and shared among team members. In addition, users will enjoy significantly improved OpenGL shadows and better solar animations with the new Heliodon object.
More than 100 performance and usability improvements: This release addresses user requests such as a new 2D X-ray fills mode, faster viewport navigation, new custom color options for backgrounds, faster access to frequently used settings, coincident selection, streamlined polyline arc editing, offset improvements, improved wheel zooming and others. This version also offers designers the ability to generate hidden lines between intersecting geometry and, in the Design Series products, to modify objects by record value.
New features in the Vectorworks Landmark and Spotlight applications: This version of the Vectorworks Landmark program includes improved stake objects with better visual representation and data information on the drawing, better control over hardscape creation, a new option to convert between boundary and path configurations and the ability to specify different pattern sizes for grid and running pavers. The Vectorworks 2012 Spotlight application features a more intuitive way to focus instruments, as well as a new soft goods object that enables the creation of curtain, border and pipe-and-drape assemblies.

Nemetschek Vectorworks Congratulates Colin Chauche, Winner of the 2011 iSquint Student Design Competition

Columbia, Maryland — Nemetschek Vectorworks, Inc. extends congratulations to Colin Chauche, winner of the iSquint Student Design Competition. Chauche is a senior at SUNY (State University of New York) Fredonia where he will graduate with a BFA in theatrical production and design with a concentration in lighting design. As winner of the competition, he will receive a professional license of the 2011 version of Vectorworks® Spotlight with Renderworks® software, as well as a personal license of Lightwright™ 5 and a single license of Field Template SoftSymbols V3.

Chauche's winning design was from The Sound of Music by Rodgers and Hammerstein production at SUNY Fredonia. "The lighting design concept provide by Colin gave me a clear understanding of his choice of colors and fixtures that were used in the design," said Kevin Linzey, a lighting-industry expert from Nemetschek Vectorworks and a judge in the competition. "The renderings were fantastic. They distinctly represented his desired look for each scene. The plot was well laid out on the printed page and well organized."

The designs were evaluated by a panel of judges that included Linzey, as well as industry experts Justin Lang from competition sponsor iSquint.net, John McKernon from Lightwright Lighting Design, Steve Shelley from Field Template and Gregg Hillmar, author of Light Plot Deconstructed.

Behind the Scenes is a program developed by The ESTA Foundation to provide entertainment technology industry members with grants for emergency situations, such as serious illness, injury or death. Vectorworks 2011 Software Wins Construction Computing "Product of the Year" Award

Columbia, Maryland — Vectorworks 2011 software was honored at this year's Construction Computing Awards ceremony as the winner of the Product of the Year 2010 award.

In addition to winning the Product of the Year award, Vectorworks 2011 software was also honored as a runner up in two categories: CAD Product of the Year 2010 (Nemetschek Vectorworks, Inc. – Vectorworks 2011) and Channel Partner of the Year 2010 (Computers Unlimited).

Vectorworks Architect Software Now Compliant with GSA BIM Guide Series 02

Nemetschek North America Announces Compliance with the GSA BIM Guide for Spatial Program Validation; Software Now Approved for Use on GSA Projects.

Columbia — Nemetschek North America has announced that its Vectorworks® Architect software has been tested by the National 3D-4D-BIM Program with the General Services Administration (GSA, see www.gsa.gov/bim) as complying with the requirements of the BIM Guide Series 02, Spatial Program Validation. Vectorworks Architect software (version 2010, SP2) may now be used on GSA projects that require BIM.

The BIM Guide Series 02, Spatial Program Validation is a set of model and data requirements, using open standards-based Building Information Models submitted as part of GSA design contracts, whose purpose is to ensure that final concept-phase designs meet the functional requirements specified by the GSA.

To meet the requirements, candidate BIM-authoring software must pass rigorous automated testing, based on a reference building specified by the GSA, modeled in the candidate software, and exported to the 2X3 IFC file format. Vectorworks Architect software passed these reference tests in early December 2009. The certification testing was performed by Digital Alchemy of Seattle, Washington, a GSA contractor.

Landru Design Releases VideoScreen 4 and SoftGoods Plug-ins for the Vectorworks Line of Products

Columbia, Maryland — Nemetschek North America has announced that Landru Design has released two new Vectorworks® software plug-ins: VideoScreen 4 and SoftGoods.

VideoScreen 4 is a suite of plug-in objects that enables users to insert 2D and 3D models of video devices (such as projection screens, plasma televisions, and CRT monitors) into Vectorworks drawings - complete with easily customizable screen images. Using the Vectorworks Object Info palette, video device formats and other parameters can be defined and changed on the fly. Screen sizes can be easily changed as projects evolve. VideoScreen 4 places projectors based on screen size and on projector lens rating, or gives lens estimates based on screen size and users' projector placement. The "Plus" version adds edge-blending and LED array capability.

The prices for the plug-ins are $40 USD for VideoScreen 4 Basic and $80 USD for VideoScreen 4 Plus. Upgrade pricing is available for users of previous VideoScreen versions.

SoftGoods is a plug-in object that allows users to insert models of straight and curved curtains and borders, as well as straight pipe-and-drape runs into Vectorworks drawings. Models can be resized on-the-fly using the Vectorworks Object Info palette or by dragging handles. This plug-in, priced at $20 USD, will also help users track part counts.
