Altair's CAE product family helps to structurally design sailboats for the Volvo Ocean Race and the America's Cup.
TROY, Mich – Altair Engineering, Inc announced today that ABstructures, an Italian structural design company that develops sailboat structures for yachts that participate in the America’s Cup and the Volvo Ocean Race, has extended its use of HyperWorks.
ABstructures has been using the HyperWorks suite since its foundation in 2008. The company initially employed OptiStruct, from the HyperWorks suite for topology optimization, along with HyperMesh, the HyperWorks meshing tool. In December 2010, the company extended its use of HyperWorks to RADIOSS, the product suite’s solver, to its development process for the analysis of the behavior of composite materials. Altair’s new agreement with ABstructures includes the rental of 20.000 Grid Works Units (GWUs) for 2011, providing the company with access to every product of the suite, including the use of HyperWorks Partner Alliance (HWPA) products at no additional costs.
In the past, ABstructures applied the HyperWorks suite in the design of the winning Volvo Ocean Race yacht Ericsson 4 as well as the Ericsson 3 yacht. ABstructures is now using HyperWorks to design and optimize three yachts for the forthcoming Volvo Ocean Race and is structurally designing for Artemis Racing, which will participate in the next America’s Cup in 2013 in San Francisco.
To design and optimize the carbon structures of the yachts, ABstructures is using HyperWorks together with other computer-aided engineering (CAE) tools to simulate composites and fluid-structure interactions. ABstructures has achieved fundamental structural improvements of all the yachts it has designed, compared to older-generation yachts. The combination of cutting-edge CAE technology and the extensive hands-on experience of ABstructures’ designers, as well as the close collaboration with Altair Engineering, have enabled the company to deliver the best design for lightweight structural projects.
“I began using HyperWorks in 2003 and have never stopped using it since then,” said Dr. Fabio Bressan, ABstructures. “When I first started to use HyperWorks, I was especially fond of its open platform and the ability to use it with any other available CAE or computer-aided design software. We also like the software suite because it enables us to handle most of the development tasks in structural design within one user interface and because it helps us to easily and quickly understand the challenges of our designs.”
“It immediately gives us the answers we need and therefore helps us drive new ideas and innovation,” adds Dr. Andrea Avaldi, ABstructures. “We particularly appreciate the morphing function within HyperMesh that allows us to change the geometry of our model and have it ready for another simulation run in 10 minutes; without HyperWorks, that would take us probably up to two or three days.”
“Last but not least, we appreciate the good collaboration between our engineers and Altair. The support is outstanding, and we are able to influence future software development by giving Altair our feedback on software enhancements and by testing them,” both designers agree.
“It is always a great pleasure to work with ABstructures,” said Cosimo Pannetta, country manager, Altair Italy. “The company is young and innovative, and the technical exchange between its team and ours is excellent and fruitful for both sides. We are glad ABstructures has decided to extend its use of HyperWorks and are confident that we have the right offering for the company’s needs. On the technical side, HyperWorks opens the possibility for ABstructures to do almost all of its simulation tasks in one software environment. Business-wise, Altair’s patented licensing system offers ABstructures a very flexible usage of all our products, including partner software, at a reasonable price. We are sure that this cooperation will last for many years.”

Airbus engineers leverage HyperWorks’ aerospace technology to develop innovative catamaran components
HyperWorks’ Optimisation Solutions Give the Airbus-Sponsored ‘Team Invictus’ a Winning Edge in the International C-class Catamaran Challenge 2010.
Leamington Spa, UK – Altair Engineering announced today that Team Invictus, a dedicated group of Airbus engineers and professional sailors, has deployed the HyperWorks suite of simulation tools to aid in the design of a new racing catamaran. The Bristol-based team, sponsored by Airbus, is leveraging the flexible model build and optimisation technologies within HyperWorks to minimise development time and overall weight for their bespoke racing catamaran. The team is scheduled to enter the vessel for the International C-class Catamaran Challenge (I4C) at the New York Yacht Club later this year, a competition not won by a British team for almost 40 years.
HyperWorks’ optimisation solution, OptiStruct, has become a standard tool for Airbus when designing lightweight components and composite-material structures to reduce aircraft fuel consumption. The same technology is now being deployed by the aerospace engineers to reduce the mass of critical catamaran components to ensure a minimum-weight, maximum- speed design. One example of how Team Invictus used OptiStruct for optimised component design is the development of a new, lightweight mast fitting. The component, a cone at the base of the wingsail, undergoes extremely heavy loading during use. Team Invictus used OptiStruct’s topology optimisation module to automatically identify the ideal location for structural material that would meet all required performance criteria. The cone was then manufactured from titanium powder using laser sintering, the first use of this process for a structural component within Airbus.
“The design of the cone was a real challenge for us, since it is heavily loaded but needed to remain light and simple to manufacture. It's one of the most important parts of the boat, and we cannot afford any breakages there,” said Julien Chaussee, future project engineer at Airbus and a member of Team Invictus. “Having access to the Altair HyperWorks suite via Airbus, we were able to apply the experience gathered in our day-to-day work to shorten the development cycle. The topology optimisation took only a couple of hours to run from setup to final results. Combined with the highly innovative manufacturing process available to us, thanks to Airbus and EADS Innovation Works, it allowed us to obtain a complete solution from design to assembly in a matter of days, rather than months—all this for less than one kilogram!”
With the HyperWorks suite proving to be a highly successful solution for Team Invictus, the optimisation technology will be used more aggressively as the final design of the catamaran takes shape.
‘It is exciting to see the HyperWorks suite being implemented by Airbus engineers on this ambitious project,’ said Maurice Linscott, regional director of Altair UK. “The drive to reduce the weight of aircraft through optimisation and the integration of more composite materials draws many parallels with the business drivers affecting our clients in the boat and yacht manufacturing industries worldwide. Team Invictus has the engineering experience, along with the best simulation tools available to make its bid for the I4C a success. I would like to wish the team members the best of luck in this and future races.”

MECAPLAST Group, France, extends use of HyperWorks to optimize automotive equipment
Altair’s CAE product family helps automotive supplier to build lighter and better components.
TROY, Mich – Altair Engineering, Inc, aprovider of simulation technology and engineering services, announced today that MECAPLAST Group, France, one of the leading European automotive suppliers, has extended its use of HyperWorks to optimize its automotive products for weight and performance.
Altair’s CAE software family will be used within the Finite Element Analysis Department for the Body Skills Centre of the company, which is working closely with the Design Department and the Test & Validation Laboratory of MECAPLAST Group to evaluate technical specifications of its customers via simulation and to provide mechanical improvements toward a ‘right-at-first-time’ solution. In addition, the department is also working on the optimization of injection molded trim components taking into account tooling constraints.
Being a long-time Altair customer, MECAPLAST Group started using the HyperWorks suite in 2005 with the implementation of HyperMesh. The suite’s finite element analysis (FEA) pre-processing software is used for the meshing of virtual models, such as garnish trims and door handles. Soon after, MECAPLAST Group implemented RADIOSS, Altair’s FEA solver, into its development process for static and dynamic analysis. Recently, the company expanded its use of the HyperWorks suite to include OptiStruct for structural optimization. OptiStruct will be used to optimize the design of products, such as the inertia/weight ratio of garnish trims.
“When we first started to use HyperWorks, we were looking for an innovative meshing solution,” said David Queval, FEA manager, Finite Element Analysis Department of Car Body Skills Centre, MECAPLAST Group. “The advantage of HyperMesh is the time savings we can realize with its automated meshing process. The open architecture design of HyperMesh also allows us to directly import and mesh any CAD model and export FE models to a large panel of commercial solvers. We discovered a cutting-edge solver technology in HyperWorks, RADIOSS, that addresses the needs of our Body Skills Centre and we are now beginning to leverage HyperWorks’ optimization solution, OptiStruct. Weight optimization is gaining importance within the automotive industry, and customers and end-users alike are looking for lighter and better products that help to save money and to reduce CO2 emission. OptiStruct will enable us to meet those demands by developing and producing better and lighter parts in less time.”
“We are very pleased with MECAPLAST Group’s decision to extend its use of HyperWorks,” said Mauro Guglielminotti, regional director, Altair, France. “With our HyperWorks CAE suite, we offer engineering companies like MECAPLAST Group all the simulation tools needed for an optimized development process. The extended use of HyperWorks at MECAPLAST Group will help to streamline development processes and will soon lead to shorter development times and an even better product quality. With OptiStruct, companies can address industry demands for weight- and shape-optimized products and drive the design process with simulation to get better results faster.”

Composite technology specialist - High Modulus standardizes on the HyperWorks Virtual Design Suite
TROY, Mich – Altair Engineering, Inc announced today that High Modulus Europe, the UK office of a world-leading supplier of composite technology and structural engineering services, has selected the HyperWorks simulation suite to enhance its composite design process.
This decision is part of High Modulus’ strategy to standardize its virtual composite design technology on HyperWorks tools throughout its global offices. The computer aided engineering (CAE) suite and its integrated solver solution, RADIOSS, were selected because of their ease of use and ability to significantly decrease the timescales involved with complex composite structural design tasks.
“As a consultancy, we have to stay responsive and commercially competitive, without compromising the high service quality our clients have come to expect from High Modulus,” said James Anderson, senior design engineer and FE team leader, High Modulus. “When I joined the company, we were using an alternate virtual design solution at our head office in New Zealand, and despite having very experienced staff, it was taking us a considerable time from start to finish of an FEA project. We halved this time by switching to HyperWorks, so this solution was the clear choice when assessing the design tool requirements for our European office. The CAE suite has allowed us to be extremely flexible for our clients, since we can perform more design iterations more quickly.”
High Modulus has a long history of supplying composite design services and materials to the marine industry and is now expanding into new industries that also wish to benefit from the use of composites. The HyperWorks suite and, in particular, its pre- and post-processors, solvers and optimization technologies are now being leveraged to deliver more efficient composite solutions to High Modulus’ automotive, energy, architectural and general industrial clients in significantly reduced timescales.
“Altair HyperWorks enables us to be more flexible, by allowing us to tailor our services to match our clients’ requirements at every stage of their project cycle. The clean-up tools are invaluable at the initial concept evaluation stage where we often have to work fast, with incomplete or untidy geometry,” continued Mr Anderson. “HyperWorks’ reliable solvers and the ability to model complex composite lay-ups and tailor material properties to match our own test data are invaluable in detailed design. We have significantly improved our productivity through the efficient use of the very powerful optimization tools for composite structures. They help us determine patch size and ply orientation and even drive the whole manufacturing process.”
As a global organization, High Modulus also demands local support for its regional design teams to keep them informed of product updates and to ensure they are well trained and being as productive as possible.
“Working with the local representatives of Altair gives us the responsiveness and service quality of a small local company and the reliability and product quality one expects from a large multinational,” Mr. Anderson emphasised.
“It is satisfying to see more and more composite specialists adopting the HyperWorks enterprise suite as their virtual design tool of choice,” said Maurice Linscott, regional director, Altair UK operations. “Composite materials represent new opportunities for engineers, but they also bring with them new complexities and challenges within the design process. Designing lightweight products with optimum material usage is vital across many industry sectors, and HyperWorks is empowering manufacturers and consultants to deliver truly innovative solutions in reduced timescales and at reduced overall cost.”
