Celeritive Technologies, Inc., developers of the ultra high-performance toolpath engine VoluMill™, announced today that it has filed a patent on its new Non-Concentric Milling technology. Designed to reduce tool load and improve chip clearance, this new toolpath generation method is included in VoluMill™ v4.0, the latest release of the popular VoluMill toolpath engine.
In most roughing toolpaths, adjacent cuts include arcs that are concentric, sharing center points and entry angles. An immediate load spike occurs whenever a cutting tool begins machining along these arcs, and the increased load remains in effect until the arc is exited. Non-Concentric Milling addresses both of these problems.
“An increase in the angle of engagement between the tool and the material always occurs when an end mill begins a counterclockwise cut (assuming climb milling), even in toolpaths designed specifically to control the engagement angle,” says Glenn Coleman, Celeritive’s chief product officer. “Non-Concentric Milling begins circular motion sooner than on each previous cut by precisely planning arc placement to stagger the entry points. This spreads the inevitable increase in engagement over a longer distance and minimizes its duration, producing a smoother load curve and aiding in chip clearance and evacuation.”
Celeritive Technologies, developers of VoluMill, is one of the world’s leading CAD/CAM technology innovators specializing in ultra high-performance toolpath solutions for the manufacturing industry. The guiding philosophy at Celeritive is to develop and supply toolpath generation solutions that allow CNC machine tools and cutting tools to operate at peak performance and are economical and simple to implement. Through dramatically reduced cycle times, manufacturing operations become more profitable, flexible, and competitive and they can maximize return on their capital investment.
