Delcam predicts record Asian sales at Taiwan Summit

Delcam announced that the company is on target to achieve record sales in Asia this year at its Asian Technical Summit held in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, last week. As might be expected, sales in Greater China and India are showing the fastest growth, but Delcam’s Sales Partners in many other countries are also expecting to see their best results.

Delcam’s Asian Technical Summit is held each year to present the latest developments from the company to its leading customers and the technical media in the region. This year’s meeting was the eighth in the series and the first to be held in Taiwan. Close to 100 delegates attended from 13 countries. They were welcomed to Kaohsiung at the opening dinner by Mr. Y.K. Tseng, Chairman of the Taiwan Mold & Die Industry Association.

With around half of the company’s revenue from software sales spent on research and development, there is always a large number of new products and enhancements to cover. This year’s meeting included demonstrations of new versions of all of Delcam’s main software products for design, machining and inspection, together with details on new products, such as the OrthoModel software for orthotics manufacture, and the DentCAD and DentMILL systems for the dental industry.

These demonstrations were complemented by presentations from a number of Delcam’s customers, including surgeon Ninian Peckitt, dental company Cerasys, footwear giants adidas and machine tool supplier YCM. These highlighted the wide range of different industries where the software is now used. More traditional Delcam applications in the toolmaking industry were demonstrated during a visit to Jui Li Enterprise Co. Ltd., one of the largest press tool manufacturers in Taiwan.

The programme was completed with contributions from the event’s sponsors, hardware suppliers HP, metrology specialists Renishaw and rapid prototyping system manufacturers Z-Corp.

Lucid Gives Facelifts a Charge with SolidWorks Software

A 10-minute, non-surgical facelift from a device that clinicians can also use to “erase wrinkles and inches” was unheard of before U.K. consultancy Lucid Product Design Group recently developed one in SolidWorks® 3D CAD software. Genie Complete uses patented electrotherapy technology to deliver the latest in skin rejuvenation and toning and has been launched in China.

Genie Tech is a Liverpool, U.K. company that has commercialized breakthrough electrotherapy research from Scotland’s University of Glasgow to deliver concentrated electric charges for 10-minute facelifts without scalpels. Genie Complete delivers precisely controlled microbursts of electricity that stimulate cells for a variety of different skin treatments. Without any product development experience, Genie Tech worked with Lucid Product Design Group to develop the multi-faceted device from the ground up. Lucid, a longtime SolidWorks customer, had a very short window to design, prototype, refine (based on user feedback), and produce a working model.

“First mover status was critical, so we needed a partner that could develop the product based on all of the necessary input in less than a year,” said David Rosenblatt, Genie’s managing director. “We hired Lucid largely on the basis of its long track record using SolidWorks in our line of business – not just as a technical design tool – but as a way of clearly visualizing ideas.”

Genie Complete delivers the electric charges via contact pads attached to affected areas of the skin or pen-type probes used to massage the area during treatment. Lucid engineers used SolidWorks eDrawings® e-mail-enabled design communication tool to send easy-to-understand solid models of the Genie design to beauticians, who could review the device’s shape and interior and provide direct feedback.

“Aside from the electronics, ergonomics and aesthetics rule the design. So user input is a must,” said Alistair Williamson, managing director at Lucid. “SolidWorks allowed us to get quick verification of design ideas from those users and innovate on-screen so that we could accelerate prototyping and finalize a design suitable for market distribution within 10 months.”

Engineers also used the SolidWorks SimulationXpress design validation tool to help ensure structural components would be optimized for minimal weight, cost effective enough to make, and strong enough to stand up to constant use. Using SolidWorks sheet metal functionality enabled suppliers to better determine costs while maximizing materials use quickly and accurately.

New Development Promotes Innovation in Humanoid Robotics and Medical Fields

TOKYO -- STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM), one of the world's leading semiconductor companies, and the Waseda University Humanoid Robotics Institute (HRI), a global leader in state-of-the-art robotics research, today announced the development of a high-performance two-wheel inverted pendulum robot, called WV-1 (Waseda wheeled Vehicle-No.1), which is the first result of an ongoing cooperation for the research and development of technology and solutions for innovative humanoid robots and medical-care robot systems. The WV-1 will be displayed at the ST booth (Booth No. 8K26) at CEATEC JAPAN 2008 to be held at the "Makuhari Messe" in Chiba Prefecture from September 30 to October 4, 2008.

ST and HRI are cooperating to use leading-edge semiconductor know-how to promote the speedier development of innovative 'humanoids' and medical-care robotic systems, involving researchers and development engineers from both ST and HRI. ST will become a supplier to HRI for semiconductor products, while also furnishing HRI with the leading-edge semiconductor prototypes on a cost-free basis, making it possible for HRI to conduct advanced evaluations of possible humanoid and medical-care robotic applications. In addition, future cooperation between ST and HRI is expected to include the establishment of an ST-sponsored scholarship system for HRI students.

The WV-1 is a two-wheeled robot on which a pole with weights is installed in an inverted fashion on a pedestal. A feedback system, controlled with the STM32, ST's ARM(R) Cortex(TM)-M3 based 32-bit MCU and the LIS344ALH 3-axis digital acceleration sensor, allows the robot to move while maintaining its balance. The MCU rapidly computes the angle of robot body incline, angular velocity and other sensor data, enabling the motor to constantly generate optimum torque, which allows the robot to continue moving smoothly without tipping over. Potential applications for this inverted pendulum robot control technology include postural control functions for humanoids and other devices, realizing new means of mobility.

HRI received a grant from "the project for reinforcement of development technologies for robotics" from The Robotics Industry Development Council. The grant was used for the development of the WV-1. Additionally, HRI is now working on plans to commercialize the robot.

SofTech Announces Annual Financial Results for FY 2008

SofTech, Inc. (OTCBB:SOFT), a proven provider of product lifecycle management (PLM) solutions, today announced Fiscal Year 2008 results. Revenue for FY 2008 was $10.1 million as compared to $11.0 million for the same period in FY 2007. The Company’s results of operations improved substantially, with the Company’s net loss decreasing by approximately $900,000 from ($1.2 million) ($.10 per share) in FY 2007 to approximately ($300,000) ($.03 per share) in FY 2008.

Net Cash flows from operating activities also improved considerably during FY 2008, increasing from approximately $300,000 (FY 2007) to approximately $1 million (FY 2008), over a 200% increase. While the Company has incurred operating losses during each of the six fiscal years ended May 31, 2006, the Company had income from operations during the last two fiscal years and generated positive net cash flow from operating activities in five out of the last six years. The year the Company failed to generate positive cash flow, it was break even. The Consolidated Statement of Cash Flows for the fiscal years ended May 31, 2008 and 2007 is provided on the attached Financial Summary.

Earnings before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation and Amortization (“EBITDA”), a non-GAAP financial measure, also improved substantially during FY 2008, increasing from $1.7 million (FY 2007) to $2.4 million (FY 2008), a 42% increase. A reconciliation of EBITDA to Net Loss is provided on the attached Financial Summary.

The Company’s revenue is derived almost entirely from technology acquisitions completed between 1997 and 2002 and the Company’s operations are not capital intensive. As of May 31, 2008, approximately 63% of the Company’s assets represent intangible assets related to these historical acquisitions. The Company does not anticipate making further acquisitions in the foreseeable future. For FY 2008, amortization expense related to these intangible assets was approximately 13% of total expenses and total revenue. Further, the periods over which these intangible costs are expensed are highly judgmental.

The Company believes that EBITDA is useful supplemental information for investors when considered along with net income and other income statement data. The Company believes that EBITDA is useful because it provides investors with information concerning the potential longer term profitability of the Company’s technology assets (subsequent to full amortization of costs), as amortization of acquisition costs has been added back to net income in arriving at EBITDA. Further, management believes that EBITDA provides a useful financial metric by which the Company can be compared with other companies that have different capital structures (interest (a cost of capital) has been added back to net income in arriving at EBITDA). It is also management’s belief that this non-GAAP measure of performance continues to be used in the investment community as a financial metric for business valuation purposes.

However, the Company believes that EBITDA is not a substitute for cash flow from operating activities, which is disclosed above and in the Company’s financial statements. Investors should carefully review the financial statements of the Company in their entirety in order to obtain a complete understanding of the Company’s financial condition and results of operations.

Delcam Crispin to show orthotics software at podiatrists’ conference

Delcam Crispin will demonstrate its OrthoModel software for the design and manufacture of orthotic insoles at the Annual Conference of the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists to be held in Bournemouth from 23rd to 25th October. OrthoModel is the latest addition to the company’s comprehensive range of software for the footwear industry. The highly-automated system provides a complete solution, from the import of scanned data from the customer to the machining of the orthotic, that produces high-quality insoles for both the comfort and medical markets.

The complete OrthoModel process is driven by a series of easy-to-use menus that incorporate the specific terminology used by the industry to describe the various features of the orthotic. These menus have been developed in association with a number of orthotics’ manufacturers to ensure that the system can be used by technicians in the industry without any need for training in general CADCAM technology.

The software is also completely "open” in that it can take data from any scanning system or use manual measurements, and can output machining instructions to any milling machine. Delcam Crispin is happy to recommend the type of equipment that is required to companies that are new to computer-aided manufacturing.

Once the customer’s details have been imported, OrthoModel includes a full range of options to design the orthotic, including features such as Kirby skive, cobra cut-out, deep heel cups and medial arch flange. Text and logos can be added to the design to engrave customer details and/or company information.

OrthoModel can then arrange a series of orthotics inside a block to give the most efficient use of material and automatically add the machining tabs needed to hold the items in place during machining. The complete set of toolpaths for the group of items can then be created automatically. The resulting toolpaths can be simulated on the computer to check that the results are exactly as required.

Using OrthoModel reduces the time needed to prepare orthotics so giving the faster turn-around times that customers demand. In addition, the use of computer-based design and manufacturing techniques brings the benefits of accuracy and quality to the orthotics industry that are already enjoyed by other sectors of footwear manufacturing.

Delcam to show PowerMILL strengths on Mazak Integrex at BIMU

Delcam will demonstrate the strengths of its award-winning PowerMILL CAM software with live demonstrations on a Mazak Integrex machine at the BIMU exhibition to be held in Milan from 3rd to 7th October. The latest version of Delcam’s CAM system for high-speed and five-axis machining offers a more complete solution for complex machine tools like the Integrex, together with more control for experienced machinists that know exactly how they wish to machine a particular part. The program will also include a range of enhancements to existing functionality to enable both faster programming and faster machining.

More machining control

Much recent development in PowerMILL has focussed on making it easier for inexperienced and casual users to generate high-quality toolpaths for high-speed and five-axis machines tools. However, very experienced users, with the most sophisticated machine tools, tend to know exactly how they want to manufacture a particular part, or undertake a particular operation. They need greater control over the results that their software can give to achieve maximum productivity, even if this requires more skill and experience with the program.

PowerMILL 9 gives them this control by making it easier for experienced users to generate toolpaths based on any 3D curve. This was possible previously using PowerMILL’s pattern machining commands but the new approach makes it easier both to create the required 3D curve and to drive the cutter along it.

A more complete solution

"Ever since its first release, PowerMILL has focussed on the more complex parts of any manufacturing operation,” explained Delcam’s CAM Development Director Steve Hobbs. "Many of our toolmaking customers tend to program the simpler tasks, like sizing the starting block of material, and finishing operations, such as cutting off, on the machine tool control rather than by off-line programming. However, as we have become more established in production machining, a growing number of our customers want to program everything with their CAM system. This has always been possible in PowerMILL but the new options in PowerMILL 9 will make the complete programming process much easier.”

Using a completely offline approach to programming gives other benefits as well. Firstly, it ensures that a fully-detailed record is maintained of the whole manufacturing process. This will make it easier for jobs to be repeated by different staff, or even at different locations, and will ensure a consistent approach is maintained whenever and wherever a part is produced subsequently.

Secondly, it makes simulation of the complete process easier and more reliable. The simulation can begin from the starting block of material, rather than the user having to produce a model of the stock remaining after the manually-programmed operations have been completed.

Faster programming and machining

PowerMILL 9 includes a range of enhancements to give faster programming and faster machining. "Originally, many customers would buy PowerMILL simply because it was the only CAM system that could machine their components or tooling,” explained Mr. Hobbs. "Now, while there are some other CAM systems that can be used to manufacture complex parts, these cannot match the speed and quality of both programming and machining that our customers can achieve with PowerMILL.”

PowerMILL 9 incorporates a number of improvements to reduce calculation times, together with some simplification of the user interface that makes it easier to select the required command and so makes programming faster. In addition, toolpath ordering has been made more efficient, especially for roughing and rest machining, so ensuring that the cutter speeds more time machining and minimal time making air moves.

"These enhancements may not grab as many headlines as completely new machining strategies,” admitted Mr. Hobbs. "However, they are vital to our customers that need to increase their productivity and reduce their lead times in order to maximise their competitiveness.”

HP Names Raj Gupta to Board of Directors

PALO ALTO, Calif: HP (NYSE:HPQ) today announced that Raj Gupta, chairman and chief executive officer of Rohm and Haas Company, has been elected to serve on the HP board of directors.

Gupta will join the board in January 2009, bringing the total number of members to 11, ten of whom are outside directors.

“For nine years as chairman and CEO, Raj Gupta has successfully guided Rohm and Haas through today’s ever-evolving global business environment,” said Mark Hurd, HP chairman and chief executive officer. “We look forward to welcoming his financial, operational and corporate governance expertise to the HP board of directors.”

Gupta, 62, has served in his current position at Rohm and Haas, a worldwide producer of specialty materials, since October 1999. Tata Elxsi inks MoU with Belgian company Open Engineering

New Delhi: Tata Elxsi, the embedded technology arm of the Tata group today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Open Engineering, the R&D subsidiary of the Belgium headquartered Samtech Group, Europe’s leading provider of Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) software.

As per the MoU, Tata Elxsi will be Open Engineering’s exclusive partner in India for the distribution and support of OOFELIE®, a multi-physics numerical simulation professional software dedicated to provide an open powerful but easy to use CAD CAE all-in-one solution for industrial engineering departments and research centers.

The MoU was signed today in the presence of H.E. Rs.10 crore rolling venture capital fund set up to support young designers

Shri Kamal Nath, Union Minister for Commerce & Industry, has announced the setting up of a Rolling Fund at National Design Business Incubator (NDBI), which is an initiative of the National Institute of Design (NID) to support young designers aspiring to become entrepreneurs in the field of design. “Needy young designers desirous of pursuing their business ideas through incubation route at NDBI can now avail this Rolling Fund support”, he informed.

The Minister further stated that the major objective of the Incubator (NDBI) is to kindle spirit of innovation ingrained in the creative culture of designers paving the path for creation of a new breed of “Designpreneurs”, and in addition, the government has agreed to permit the NID faculty to have a share in their consultancy work. The pattern of consultancy sharing would be on the lines of other premier educational institutions in India such as IITs and IIMs.

National Design Business Incubator set up by NID in 2005 is aimed at building on India’s design strengths aimed at making “made in India, designed for the world” a reality. The first and only design-led business incubator in the country set up with the support of DST, NDBI helps young designers turn their innovative ideas and concepts into successful competitive businesses by providing an environment where they can develop the essentials of business management skills and systems.

Lack of adequate support in pursuing their ideas into business models has so far been a debilitating factor for young designers in setting up their start-up businesses. In spite of having excellent business ideas, designers so far have not been able to pursue their design enabled business instincts in view of the above situation. This has forced most of them to take up jobs though they wanted to be entrepreneurs.

Design and innovation are inextricably linked, the distinction between them often blurred. The design process guides the transformation of innovation into fully functional, marketable products and services. It is design which links technology to the needs and desires of markets. The need to set up a separate Rolling Fund has arisen especially when most of the financial institutions do not support young designers who are fresh, and first generation entrepreneurs just out of the academic institutions, without industrial experience.

Largest ANSYS International Conference To Date Underscores Increasing Value of Engineering Simulation

Autodesk Gallery at One Market Opens in San Francisco, Showcasing Design Process

Interactive Gallery open to industry for discussion and collaboration, exhibits include the Ford Shelby GT500 and the Bay Bridge Seismic Safety Project
SAN RAFAEL, Calif., Sept. 24 : Autodesk, Inc., a leader of design and engineering software, today will host the opening of the Autodesk Gallery at One Market in San Francisco, an interactive environment that highlights the impact of software and technology on the process of innovative design.

The 16,500-square-foot Gallery, located at One Market Street, is the first space in the San Francisco Bay Area dedicated to the spirit of design innovation, with 20 exhibits including the California Academy of Sciences, Ford Shelby GT500, Cathedral of Christ the Light in Oakland, Calif., and the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge seismic retrofit. The space is intended as a location where designers can discuss the latest in technology and be inspired by others' work.

"The Autodesk Gallery showcases the work of our customers from across a number of industries, including architects, engineers, manufacturers, film makers, video game developers and artists," said Carl Bass, Autodesk president and CEO. The Gallery is also intended to become a meeting space for the design industry. The Autodesk Gallery will be open to the public on the first Wednesday of each month from 1 to 5 p.m. beginning Oct. 1, 2008.

Designed to achieve a LEED-Commercial Interiors Platinum certification rating, the space takes green interior design to the highest level and includes daylight and views, recycled material, certified renewable lumber, local manufacturing and renewable energy.

Arena Solutions Reports 38% Increase in Revenues and Continued Growth in International Customer Base for Second Quarter 2008

FOSTER CITY, CA -- Arena Solutions, the leading provider of on-demand product lifecycle management (PLM) software for manufacturers of all sizes, today announced a 38 percent quarter-over-quarter gain and 103% year-over-year gain in revenues for its second quarter, ended June 30, 2008. During the Q208 quarter, Arena continued to see growth in its customer base, with continued interest from manufacturers outside of the United States. Sales cycles were also considerably shorter, as more than half of all sales closed in eight weeks or less.

Challenging economic conditions inspired many existing customers to work with Arena to maximize their subscriptions and expand their use of Arena PLM to further accelerate product development and optimize the way they handle key processes, such as engineering change management, new product introduction, compliance, and manufacturing outsourcing. These customers clearly see that increasing their investment in on-demand Arena PLM now quickly pays for itself with reduced errors, higher productivity and greater control.
