Mahindra Engineering Services received the runner up award in the Process Innovation category at the NASSCOM Innovation Awards 2011.
Mumbai: Mahindra Engineering Services (MES), an engineering consultant and service provider to the global automotive, aerospace and manufacturing industry and a part of the US $ 7.1 billion Mahindra Group, received the runner up award in the Process Innovation category at the NASSCOM Innovation Awards 2011.
Mahindra Engineering received the award for Process Improvement to Leverage Virtual Validation at Early Stages of Product Development, an innovative solution to speed up the simulation time in the automotive design validation process, resulting in time saving of 80 per cent. The process improvement has also reduced manual intervention.
"We are delighted to receive this prestigious award from NASSCOM. It is a clear validation of our ability to devise innovative solutions that result in considerable savings in terms of both time and cost. . At Mahindra Engineering, we are able to simulate and validate complex engineering cases for our customers. This award will inspire us to continue providing value added engineering solutions to the global industry," said Mr. Prashant Kamat, CEO, Mahindra Engineering Services.
NASSCOM launched its innovation initiative in 2003. The objective of the Innovation Initiative is to encourage innovative practices across the IT-BPO-ESO Industry and provide support for these by developing an ecosystem that is conducive to fostering innovation, technological advancement and the creation of IP. The winners were selected after a rigorous two round process by an esteemed panel of judges comprising of industry luminaries, academicians and analysts and were chosen across diverse verticals including Telecom, Manufacturing, BSFI, healthcare, utilities etc. The entries were shortlisted on the basis of the innovation of technology, scalability of the model and number of patents filed by the applicant company.
Mahindra Engineering's winning innovation in Virtual Validation
A major challenge in digital product development consists of achieving an "Analysis Lead Design". Conventional Finite Element methods require mammoth efforts and are computationally expensive. Also, the analysis is prone to serious errors as myriad parameters are processed. Mahindra Engineering developed an automated process for generating simplified beam model of Body-In-White against the conventional shell meshed model. This significantly reduced time and increased productivity
The methodology developed has opened new avenues to shorten the process of product development and this has led to exploring possibilities to reduce simulation time in other areas. A model building that normally required 2.5 weeks to complete took just 2 days with this innovative method. This unique method can also be used for crash and durability analysis.
The manual intervention with this new method is 80% less than the conventional method which helped in eliminating employee fatigue. With the newly developed automated method, the solver time has reduced from a level of 4 hours to 2 minutes, thus saving huge solver time.
