Paris, France – ESI has developed over the years a set of applications for the foundry industry to optimize processes and to improve part quality. ESI’s Casting Simulation Suite (including ProCAST & QuikCAST) allows predictive evaluations of the entire casting process including: filling and solidification defects; mechanical properties; and, complex part distortion. It enables rapid visualization of the results of casting and thus allows correct decision-making at an early stage in the design of a manufacturing process.
The new 2010 version delivers numerous enhancements; offering several improved product functionalities as well as new features that meet today’s foundry needs. ESI’s Casting Simulation Suite 2010 allows an engineer to build step-by-step the necessary functionalities to span the entire foundry process – from die design through to the component’s performance during its productive life. In this release, ESI introduces important developments in micro modeling, allowing the prediction of the microstructure and assessment of the consequent mechanical properties of ferrous and non-ferrous alloy, both as cast and after heat treatment. This major technological breakthrough has led, for instance, to the precise selection of heat treatment parameters in order to obtain the required properties for Austempered Ductile Iron (ADI) components. Using this capability, ADI can be engineered to have properties superior to commonly used alloys, such as steel, as it is lighter and stronger for the same applications. Simulation helps achieve this performance, providing new materials opportunities to the transportation industry.
"ProCAST recent developments prove to be excellent for predicting the microstructure and the basic mechanical properties of casting materials,” said Dr. Antton Meléndez Arranz, Metallurgist at Tecnalia. “Using the microstructure module, the simulation of local graphite expansion is possible with a sensitively higher accuracy for shrinkage defects prediction. The microstructure module opens up a new line of possibilities and makes other types of analyses possible, particularly in relation to metallurgical quality level adjustments, according to the inoculation parameters in simulation."
Also included in version 2010 is a new optimization module. With only one simulation, engineers must set the best conditions for the design or process to reach objectives, such as minimizing porosity or improving yield. Using the new optimization module several simulations of the same process are run automatically, with slight variations of the input parameters (as happens on the foundry shop floor). Robustness and part quality are quantified from the simulation results.
The Casting Simulation Suite includes solutions and enhancements in gas porosity predictions, pin squeeze, air entrainment, thermal modulus and also for results extraction. The overall performance has been significantly improved.

Winner’s Digital Painting to Be Featured as Splash Screen for Autodesk SketchBook Mobile App.
SAN RAFAEL, Calif - Autodesk, Inc named artist Luis Peso the winner of the company’s recent SketchBook Hero Image Contest. The contest called for images created with Autodesk SketchBook digital painting and drawing products.
Peso’s winning submission “Progress” will be the splash screen for Autodesk SketchBook Mobile — an application that has been downloaded more than two million times. Peso is based in Spain and used Autodesk SketchBook Pro for iPad to create his winning image. He is a professional goldsmith/silversmith, but spends his free time sketching and is a member of the International Association of Mobile Digital Artists.
SketchBook users submitted digital paintings and drawings created with Autodesk SketchBook products, used for illustration on desktops, laptops and mobile devices, including SketchBook Pro, SketchBook Mobile, SketchBook Pro for iPad, SketchBook Designer and SketchBook Express. The general public voted for one of seven finalists, which each represented different countries including France, Germany, India, Ireland, Spain, United Kingdom and the United States. Phillip Gruhn’s “Surfacing Fish” and Laura Lukauskaite’s “HooDoo” were second and third runners-up, respectively.

Peso’s winning submission “Progress” will be the splash screen for Autodesk SketchBook Mobile — an application that has been downloaded more than two million times. Peso is based in Spain and used Autodesk SketchBook Pro for iPad to create his winning image. He is a professional goldsmith/silversmith, but spends his free time sketching and is a member of the International Association of Mobile Digital Artists.
SketchBook users submitted digital paintings and drawings created with Autodesk SketchBook products, used for illustration on desktops, laptops and mobile devices, including SketchBook Pro, SketchBook Mobile, SketchBook Pro for iPad, SketchBook Designer and SketchBook Express. The general public voted for one of seven finalists, which each represented different countries including France, Germany, India, Ireland, Spain, United Kingdom and the United States. Frankfurt, Germany- December 1st to 4th, 2010 marked the 17th EuroMold 2010 Fair. Known as an annual world fair for design, product development, mold making, and tooling, this year, over 55,000 people attended it from 86 different countries. Encee, an authorized ZW3D distributor in Germany had its debut showcase for ZW3D at EuroMold 2010.
At the show, Encee built a fifty-two square meter booth with four open display sides, two large ZW3D background palates, and six laptops for hands-on demonstrations. There was much curiosity over the new software as numerous visitors attended the booth during the four days of exhibition. New customers were delighted to discover the extent of the capabilities of ZW3D, and were even more surprised by the great price. People who had already heard about ZW3D and former VX customers were very excited about the new software. Particularly, they commented on how the new features of TransMagic, Partsolution, and Turning will be able to aid them in their designs.

These exhibitors showcased products and services from related industry sectors, as well as included numerous technology world premiers. ESPRIT Skill Builder Events conducted
Frivolous fanfare was not on the set list in early December, when ESPRIT took the main stage for DP Technology’s premier West Coast skill builder event in Costa Mesa, Calif.
Created to help ESPRIT’s users take advantage of time-saving tips and tricks, the day of no-cost training was supplemented with presentations from users and partners with unique insights on the software.
“The user seminar was the best opportunity to discover some new ways to utilize ESPRIT and uncover a few mistakes I’ve been making when approaching part features and processes,” said Bob Lewis of Metalore, an El Segundo, Calif.-based company that specializes in the manufacturing of precision parts for the motor sports, military hardware and medical sectors.
In addition to attending the event, Lewis shared his stories of success with peers in attendance. “It was a great opportunity to discuss the parts and processes of Metalore with participants having different parts but similar issues when processing parts,” he said.
James Kim, an applications engineer for Agie Charmilles, LLC, was invited to speak about the latest wire EDM developments, particularly rotary wire EDM applications.
“This allowed ESPRIT end users from diverse machining backgrounds to see sample application examples and programming approaches, and to see and feel rotary EDM sample parts up close, in their hands,” Kim said. “I met customers face-to-face after my presentation and was pleasantly surprised to see great interest and excitement in their eyes.”
With thorough coverage provided by experienced ESPRIT instructor and Application Engineer Paul Walczyk, the skill-building event was designed to do just that — build skills. Created to get into the nuts and bolts of the software, the day of learning in a casual atmosphere was meant to provide ESPRIT customers with tools they can really use.
"There is something to be said about being interactive," Walczyk said. "It's a great chance to ask questions and have them answered on the spot."
Walczyk encourages future attendees to bring both questions and feedback.
"This gives us an opportunity to collect information about what end-users are looking for in the future," he said. "They get to see what's new, but they also give us an idea of what's needed and this information is given to R&D (research and development) for consideration."
“The goals of the skill builder event were to deliver training on a variety of hidden gems in ESPRIT, as well as to share powerful success stories from our users,” said DP Marketing Events Manager Shelby Paul.
The event was also an opportunity for users to learn about ESPRIT’s current development plan, recent acquisitions and partnerships, and the ESPRIT of today and the near future.

Adlens Uses DS SolidWorks Software to Sharpen Eyesight In The Developing World
U.K. Company Designs Adjustable Eyeglasses to Solve Vision Problems without the Assistance of eye specialists.
CONCORD, Mass., USA — Easily correctable vision problems push scores of people from self-sufficiency into poverty every day in developing countries that might have only one eye care professional for every million residents. U.K.-based Adlens is trying to fill that need with affordable, adjustable eyeglasses that correct 80 percent of the refractive vision errors encountered by people in the developing world.
Using SolidWorks® software, Adlens created a layered lens that enables wearers to literally dial up custom prescription eyeglasses with no help from an optician, optometrist or ophthalmologist. Under guidance of a trained person (for instance, a community health worker) Adlens’ adaptive eyeglasses adjust with the turn of a knob to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and presbyopia (loss of focus). For people who won’t encounter an eye care professional in their whole lives, Adlens adaptive eyeglasses are a new lease on a productive life.
“There are hundreds of millions of people around the world who need only a simple pair of eyeglasses to remain self sufficient,” said Sjoerd Hannema CEO of Adlens. “We are working through the Vision for a Nation program to raise awareness of the impact impaired vision can have on a person’s education and quality of life. Our product is a way to correct many of those vision problems with the infrastructure available in the developing world.”
Adlens used SolidWorks to design a four-layer polycarbonate eyeglass lens. Two rigid lenses enclose a cavity housing a flexible third lens that contains a volume of oil. Knobs on the eyeglass frames pump the transparent oil in or out of the lens, where the middle layer flexes to provide the optical power the wearer needs. Then the wearer simply removes the levers and the adjustment knobs to lock in the prescription.
Creating a mechanism delicate enough for fine adjustments yet durable enough to survive heat, dust, and transportation over long distances was challenging, said Adlens Product Designer Alex Edginton. SolidWorks enabled the Adlens engineering team to experiment with designs that would balance precision and ruggedness.
“Structural integrity and durability are significant considerations for us. Rwanda, where we are working with the Ministry of Health to provide our spectacles, has a wide range of environmental conditions. The lenses and adjusters mechanisms are designed and tested to cope with the harsh conditions they will be subjected to,” he said. “SolidWorks enabled us to evaluate new designs quickly and easily. We used the 3D data to visualize concepts, create rapid prototypes and produce finished components, and SolidWorks was particularly helpful in understanding the interaction of each component in the product. We’re putting much more functionality than usual into a pair of spectacles with the adjustable lenses, seals and mechanisms, which are assemblies of complex, precision components. Fitting them together optimally was critical.”
Rwanda is typical of sub-Saharan African nations that might have only a handful of eye care professionals to serve the whole country. They usually work in or around the capital cities, mainly treating the wealthy, leaving low income and rural Rwandans to fend for themselves.

Lantek launches its new SteelWork Software to meet the needs of the structural steel market
Lantek Systems launched its new Lantek SteelWork Solution at the recent sheet metalworking technology exhibition, EuroBLECH 2010. The new software has been designed to help companies manage their production processes when designing and completing structural steel, sheet metal, and construction projects.
The new Lantek SteelWork System is the latest step in the company’s ambition to bring its 20 years of expertise to a market which generates 2 billion Euros annually in Europe alone, processing 200 million tonnes of steel.

Delcam to expand Western US sales team
Delcam has announced the expansion to the Western United States sales team starting in January 2011.
Federico Libertini, will be transitioning from his current role of Support Manager to Direct Sales Engineer. Federico started with Delcam as an Applications Engineer in 2004. Through his incredible work ethic and excellent job working with the vast amount of Delcam customers, he moved quickly into a more prominent role. In addition to his experience in support, Federico’s career has given him an extensive background in machining starting as a CNC machinist in 1998, when he began to program lathes and mills both with manual input and GibbsCAM. Prior to joining Delcam, he attended NTMA training centres in Southern California where he received Basic and Advanced MasterCAM training with solids, surfaces and multi-axis programming.
"I am extremely pleased to welcome Federico to the Delcam Western Sales Team”, commented Christian Briscoe, Delcam’s VP Western Sales. "His experience as a Delcam AE and Support Manager will make him a vital addition to the sales team. His many contacts in the industry and his knowledge of the Delcam products mean that he can make a valuable contribution towards growing our sales right away. Also starting in January, John Gale of Gale Force Technology will now officially be joining the Western Sales Team full time as Direct Sales Engineer for Delcam. Briscoe added, "John has a long history with Delcam and dedication to our software. He was originally on the advisory council from Bridgeport when we initially began development of FeatureCAM. Kevin Smith has also increased his role within the Western Sales Team by adding all of Southern California for FeatureCAM and ArtCAM sales. Kevin has worked very hard to transition into his sales role for Delcam since 2009, after the acquisition of Vizion technology where he worked previously as an Applications Engineer. Prior to making the move to California and joining the world of CAD/CAM, Kevin also worked in the manufacturing industry from 2003 to 2007 in the automotive sector, milling mould components in the Michigan area. "We are really proud of the great strides that Kevin as made in fulfilling his role here at Delcam. We are very confident in his abilities to increase revenue in Southern California and look forward to his continued success,” said Glenn McMinn, President of Delcam North America.
Last but not least, after several years working in the marketing group at Delcam and formerly EGS, Maryann Beaver has joined the Western Sales Team full time as Sales Administrator. "Maryann has been a top performer in Marketing for over 12 years; she has already immersed herself into her new role to assist the Western Team by bringing fresh ideas to help assist the team and our customers. The Western Team is very fortunate to have her working with them, where I know her dedication to Delcam and our customers will be very valuable,” added McMinn.

Kevin Smith has also increased his role within the Western Sales Team by adding all of Southern California for FeatureCAM and ArtCAM sales. Kevin has worked very hard to transition into his sales role for Delcam since 2009, after the acquisition of Vizion technology where he worked previously as an Applications Engineer. Prior to making the move to California and joining the world of CAD/CAM, Kevin also worked in the manufacturing industry from 2003 to 2007 in the automotive sector, milling mould components in the Michigan area. Last but not least, after several years working in the marketing group at Delcam and formerly EGS, Maryann Beaver has joined the Western Sales Team full time as Sales Administrator. Falcontec produces rotary dies in as little as one day With ArtCAM
Falcontec, a UK-based manufacturer of rotary foiling and embossing tools, is using Delcam’s ArtCAM engraving software to provide its customers with dies within deadlines as short as one working day. With over fifty years in the industry and a strong dedication to in-house research and development, the company understands that this fast service gives it a strong competitive edge in today’s challenging economic climate.
"Most of the files that we receive from our customers are Adobe Illustrator files. These often contain a number of levels, which highlight the areas of the design that they want embossed or foiled, for instance,” explained Mike Brown, Programming Supervisor at Falcontec. "When a customer checks the quality of the design, they are usually looking at the visually-pleasing elements of the work, but this doesn’t mean it is suitable for machining. This is where ArtCAM’s Vector Doctor becomes extremely useful. It not only allows you to see vectors that could cause machining issues but it automatically fixes them. This saves so much heartache, especially when some jobs we receive have up to 30,000 vectors.”

"With our previous software, calculating the toolpaths for machining took anything up to half a day,” he commented. "Now it can be done in seconds. We also had no indication on how long the calculation would take. With ArtCAM this can be monitored with the progress bar but you very rarely need to watch it because the software is that quick.”

For example, an engraved female die can be used in conjunction with a hard rubber anvil or, for the finest detail, both male and female sets can be provided. This release makes the programming of safe toolpaths easier than ever thanks to new stock-model-engagement options that protect both the cutting tool and the machine from excessive loading. Other enhancements include new editing capabilities to simplify the machining of duplicate items; more versatile control of feed-rates for leads and links; and extra functionality for sketching, plus the completion of the move to the new clearer forms for the complete range of strategies.
The options to optimise tool loading will help overcome a constant conflict for programmers. On the one hand, they want to maximise productivity by setting feed-rates as fast as their machines will allow; on the other hand, they need to ensure safe speeds that will not break the tool. The need for safe machining has, of course, become more critical as a growing number of companies are introducing lights-out, unmanned operation overnight or during weekends.
A number of CAM programs incorporate strategies based on the extent of cutter engagement to give more consistent loading on the tool and so allow higher feed-rates. However, these options are usually limited to the initial roughing operations, or to only roughing and rest-roughing. PowerMILL’s new stock engagement technology can also be employed with all of the system’s finishing and rest-finishing strategies so ensuring that the safest-possible toolpaths are run on the machine at all stages.

PowerMILL users can now avoid these problems by setting specific entry and exit feed-rates, either as percentages of the feed-rate for the main toolpath or as absolute values.
PowerMILL has incorporated sketching functionality for several years, for example to draw boundaries within the model to limit individual machining strategies to particular areas of the part. Rocket City Space Pioneers Rely on SolidWorks to "Power" Their Entry in the Google Lunar X PRIZE

CONCORD, Mass - Dassault Systèmes SolidWorks Corp announced that the Rocket City Space Pioneers (RCSP) will use SolidWorks® software to “boost” its entry in the Google Lunar X PRIZE. The X PRIZE competition challenges and inspires engineers and entrepreneurs from around the world to develop low-cost methods for robotic space exploration.
A Huntsville, Ala. team featuring leaders in the spaceflight and educational fields is currently developing a low-cost lunar lander/rover system to send to the moon by 2014, which will be able to travel 500 meters and transmit video images and data back to the Earth. Led by Dynetics, the team comprising Teledyne Brown Engineering, Andrews Space, Spaceflight Services, Draper Laboratory, the University of Alabama in Huntsville, and the Von Braun Center for Science & Innovation (VCSI) plans to be the first privately funded team to get to the moon.
Using SolidWorks® CAD and SolidWorks Simulation software, RCSP will be able to quickly and easily validate its designs for the lunar lander system, which will be capable of making a soft landing on a planetary body and deploying the rover. SolidWorks will allow RCSP to test its designs to ensure that the lander and rover stay within the specified dimensions and weight, while minimizing costs. With SolidWorks Simulation, RCSP can subject its designs to the same airflow, stress, and thermal conditions the system will experience while in orbit. RCSP is also using SolidWorks Enterprise PDM software for configuration management to ensure complete control over all design information across its diverse team.
“Choosing SolidWorks software for the X PRIZE competition was a natural extension of the work we do every day. During the three-day Las Vegas conference, attendees were exposed to innovations in 3D design technologies and witnessed the positive impact of design and technology through industry keynotes, customer exhibits and presentations.
“Great design has always had an impact, but today, the need for that impact is greater than ever. We are facing urgent and complex global challenges that demand our most creative work and innovative solutions,” said Carl Bass, CEO and president of Autodesk, during the opening Autodesk University keynote.
Also during the opening keynote, Autodesk chief technology officer Jeff Kowalski talked about how a change in toolset—due to a transformative technology—can inspire a change in mindset. Today’s transformative technology is Infinite Computing which uses the virtually unlimited computing power available through the cloud. Kowalski challenged attendees to change the way they are thinking about technology and to adopt a new paradigm to solve their greatest design problems.
“Infinite computing is changing the nature and potential impact of design in important ways,” said Kowalski. “Now, we can create amazingly robust design explorations, brilliant visualizations and precise simulations more efficiently and easily than ever before.”

Autodesk invited a broad range of speakers who inspired attendees with examples of design’s impact on a range of industries and communities.
* Scott Summit, CTO of Bespoke Innovations, demonstrated how his company used 3D design technology to create customized and affordable prosthetics that reflect each person’s morphology and personal style.
* Franz von Holzhausen, chief designer at Tesla Motors, drove a prototype of the all-electric Tesla Model S sedan onto the AU stage before showing how he and his design team were able to create multiple prototypes of the vehicle using Autodesk software.
* Bart Nye, public information officer for CalTrans, revealed how CalTrans used visualization technology to more effectively communicate major transportation construction projects to the public, enabling them to minimize traffic and optimize efficiency.
“Using visualization technology to influence public behavior around transportation projects has been a game-changer for us,” said Nye. “We can do things at CalTrans now that we’ve never been able to do before. We can use these robust visualizations to not only affect, but improve, motorist behavior.”
