Winning building information model of Sutter Medical Center, Castro Valley, USAWinner of the BIM project category as well as the public vote of the Tekla BIM Awards Competition 2010 is the cross-organizational IPD team who ‘managed by modeling’ the Sutter Medical Center in Castro Valley, USA. Steel award goes to an airport expansion in India, Concrete award to an office building in the Netherlands, and the modeling of a residential building from Finland gains special recognition.
The Winner of the BIM project category as well as the public vote, the Sutter Medical Center in Castro Valley, USA, was modeled by a unique 11-party cross-organizational IPD (Integrated Project Delivery) team. The building has been modeled right from the start of the project, the team working together since 2008 to create a completely coordinated and constructable 3D model. The building information model of the Sutter Medical Center will eventually get passed onto the building owner for facilities management use.
Winner of the Steel category is Yugasoft with their model of the Chennai airport expansion located in India. Hurks Delphi Engineering won the Concrete category by modeling an office building at Catharina-Amaliastraat in the Netherlands. Finnish engineering office Ylimäki & Tinkanen gained special recognition for exemplary BIM collaboration in an ordinary housing project of Skanska with their model of residential building Gramofoni in Helsinki, Finland.
The winners of the competition were chosen by a jury of leading BIM experts in the world: professor Charles Eastman of Georgia Institute of Technology, Björn K. Stangeland, CEO of DDS and product manager for buildingSMART International, and Viktor Várkonyi, CEO of Graphisoft; Tekla was represented by CEO Ari Kohonen and Executive Vice President Risto Räty.
“The winner of the BIM category, Sutter Medical Center, has been carried through on stringent schedule and costs with outstanding results,” said the jury. “Building information modeling was used in an exemplary way of maximized collaboration. The project was managed based on the model with all disciplines utilizing the modeled building information and fitting in a huge amount of HVAC pipes and equipment needed for a hospital to function.”
Entries to the Global BIM Awards competition were the winners of regional Tekla model competitions held by Tekla area offices and resellers during 2010. The competition was divided into three categories: BIM, steel, and concrete. Tekla Global BIM Awards 2010 gathered nearly 50 exemplary construction projects around the world and nearly 1400 votes for the varied Tekla models presented on the competition website.
