Delcam presented its latest developments in orthotic prescription and order tracking to members of the e-Custom project recently at their third General Assembly meeting in Paris, France, on 12th and 13th May. The e-Custom project aims to bridge the gap between mass production and mass customization, engaging the customer in the initial design of the products and then manufacturing these personalised, added-value products in a novel, coordinated, eco-friendly and efficient, decentralised approach.
According to the coordinator of the project, Dr. Dimitris Mourtzis from the University of Patras, "The e-Custom consortium contains a promising combination of 11 partners from industry, research institutes and universities who will be working together on bridging the earlier mentioned gap in two key areas of the European Manufacturing Industry: Automotive and HealthCare. The fact that Delcam showcased a major development result this early in the project gives me confidence that we will be successful in this challenging project.”
"Within the e-Custom project, Delcam is developing its new generation of software products to support the design and manufacture of custom orthotic insoles,” explained Chris Lewis Jones from Delcam. At the meeting, we showcased the latest development of our orthotic prescription and order-tracking software, which integrates with the iQube foot scanner. This is set against the project’s objective of involving the customer in the design process of individualised products.”
Delcam will also show this first result from the e-Custom project at the Custom Orthotic Insoles Technology Forum, to be held at Bath University on 19th and 20th May (www.orthotics-cadcam.com/events).
In the coming months, projects partners LMS, PDTech, IMI and Fatronik will focus on finalising the requirement settings so that developments in the automotive area will commence. Other partners will start up the activities to reach an efficient level of decentralised manufacturing by developing tools that will support the manufacturing and/or assembly of selected parts outside the central manufacturing site.
The project also aims to measure the environmental footprint of the possible solutions to support the decision on the most appropriate manufacturing solution (where, how, who and when). In order to facilitate this process, a multi-layer data exchange infrastructure will be built to ensure interoperability between all users.
