EOS Rapid Manufacturing Offerings Expand at Ogle Model

PLASTIC LASER-SINTERING SERVICE EXTENDED

Krailling, Germany: Rapid manufacturing and prototyping specialist, Ogle Models (Letchworth, UK), has introduced a flame-retardant plastic to the range of materials that it uses to produce components for customers. Designated PA 2210 FR, the powder is produced by EOS for use in its laser-sintering machines, of which Ogle operates three, two of which were bought in June 2008 as part of a £1 million investment.

The company believes it is one of the first RM/RP bureaus in Europe to run the fire-resistant material in its machines. Already it has produced two sets of parts for the cabin and fuel tank of an aircraft in quantities ranging from 50- to 200-off, said sales and marketing director, David Bennion.

The polyamide PA 2210 FR was especially designed to meet the flammability, smoke and toxicity standards for the civil aerospace industry. Airplane manufacturers like Boeing, Dassault, Embraer and others have successfully tested the new material. PA 2210 FR typically qualifies for "flying hardware" with wall thicknesses down to 2 mm.

In the telecommunications industry, Ogle has for some time been producing a fire-retardant, fiber-optic tray for communications towers using a combination of stereolithography (SLA) and vacuum casting. The process used to be time-consuming and relatively expensive. The same part is now laser-sintered in one operation using PA 2210 FR in quantities up to 180-off, without the need for tooling, resulting in a 30 percent cost saving for the customer.

Recent investment at Ogle's product development service centre in Letchworth has seen a near doubling of floor area, giving more space to develop both the traditional model making and CNC prototyping sides of its business. Clients include many blue-chip organizations such as Bentley and GlaxoSmithKline as well as leading design, building and architectural firms including Laing O'Rourke, Arup and KPF.

The first EOS plastic laser-sintering machine, an EOSINT P 385, was installed at Letchworth in 2000, but for the last 18 months it has been working to capacity, 24 hours a day. Ogle's rapid prototyping director, Steve Willmott, commented that the machine has been upgraded twice by EOS to take advantage of improvements in laser-sintering. The result has been a 30 percent increase in productivity and a 50 percent improvement in component quality.

A step-change in performance came with the installation of the two latest machines, a larger EOSINT P 730 with 700 x 380 x 580 mm build volume and a smaller 200 x 250 x 330 mm capacity FORMIGA P 100.

Said Mr. Willmott, "New control software makes these machines much easier to operate, as no guesswork or experience is needed to set the scaling factor that allows for shrinkage of the part.

"There is less of a problem in the X and Y axes as shrinkage is linear, but it is non-linear in Z. The latest EOS software applies compensation in all three axes automatically, making it quicker to set up a new job."

He went on to say that the twin-laser P 730 is 40 percent faster than earlier laser-sintering machines, producing components that look as though they have been moulded and with better dimensional accuracy and surface finish. Key to the improvement is the 0.12 mm standard layer thickness, down from 0.15 mm on the P 385.

Similarly the FORMIGA P 100 does everything that the large machine is able to, but within a smaller work volume, yet to even higher accuracy thanks to the 0.1 mm layer thickness. An early contract fulfilled by Ogle using this machine was for a customer in the medical sector, whose fine-tolerance nylon parts were previously made by SLA and vacuum casting in a longer lead time and at higher cost.

Series production of laser-sintered plastic components is becoming the norm at Ogle, in addition to ones and twos for prototype applications. A good example is the manufacture of parts in batches of several hundred for a thermal imaging camera used in search-and-rescue work.

From a CAD model supplied by the customer, laser-sintering is used to make the chassis that supports the thermal imaging screen and the electronics. No hard tooling is required, so any alteration in design is easily accommodated without additional expense.

A big advantage of additive layer manufacturing by laser-sintering is that the process is fully self-supporting, allowing parts to be built within other parts and with complex geometries that could not be realized any other way. These attributes lower the cost of production and at the same time offer unfettered freedom of design. Moreover, the resulting components are strong and rigid enough to be used in places where they may be subjected to mechanical and thermal stress.

By way of illustration, Mr Bennion described a project that Ogle carried out for a rally team. Prototype under-bonnet parts previously machined from aluminium and composites, specifically for the air inlet catch tank and head breather, were replaced by laser-sintered, aluminum-filled nylon, reducing both the weight and cost of the new car. The integrity of the parts was maintained during seven days of rigorous endurance and reliability tests in Europe, during which the car clocked up 1,400 km/870 miles.

Boeing and Siemens PLM Software Sign New Agreement to Extend Teamcenter Deployment

CHICAGO and PLANO, Texas: Siemens PLM Software, a business unit of the Siemens Industry Automation Division and a leading global provider of product lifecycle management (PLM) software and services, today announced that Boeing, the world's leading aerospace company, has signed a new software license agreement for Teamcenter(R), Siemens PLM Software's digital lifecycle management solution.

Siemens PLM Software technology currently enables Boeing to access current and accurate digital information wherever and whenever required. Boeing uses Teamcenter on several key programs to enhance collaboration and improve workflow management.

Teamcenter to replace legacy systems

As part of this agreement, Boeing will work with Siemens PLM Software to retire and replace selected legacy systems with Teamcenter. Teamcenter is being used for bill of material management, configuration management, change management and document management.

Sukhoi Civil Aircraft Company's Superjet 100 (SSJ100), marked its maiden flight on May 19, 2008.

Russia's new entry into the competitive and rapidly growing global regional jet market involved an international team of international partners and world-class aircraft systems suppliers throughout Western Europe and the United States. The goal for SCAC was to bring all system suppliers into a virtual enterprise on a global platform, implementing the latest design and manufacturing technology. The end result is an aircraft that consumes 10 percent less fuel than its nearest competitor, has a 10 percent lower overall cost of ownership and has the lowest price in its class. The SSJ100 also offers unprecedented passenger comfort in the regional jet category, with wider seats, wider aisles and larger storage bins.

To create this industry-leading aircraft, Sukhoi Civil Aircraft Company and its partners worked within a single master data warehouse enabled with Teamcenter that included all 3D models and related data to completely define and digitally mock up any aspect of the SSJ100. This warehouse, or platform, enabled the company to create Russia's first aircraft from a paperless design process.

Siemens PLM Software's Teamcenter software suite, the world's most widely-used PLM portfolio, was central to SCAC upgrade effort and was among key factors in achieving first flight in a fast-paced development program for the SSJ100 regional airliner.

Teamcenter helped coordinate the efforts of approximately 1,700 engineers and manufacturing specialists in more than eight locations with a world-class team of partners across the globe.

Some history --
Throughout the 1950s, Victor Diehl supported his family through his focus on precision mold products for the medical industry. In the 1960s, Victor and son Alan invested in NC (Numerical Control) machines to expedite tooling of components for aircraft manufacturing. Ten years later, Alan and his brother-in-law Jack Epps, a physicist, built a smart NC machine powered by a mini-computer.

In 1980, Bryan and Larry Diehl, Alan's sons, greatly influenced by the mathematical skills of their uncle Jack, joined the machining firm and wrote a UNIX program for surface modeling and machining. In 1988, Surfware, Inc. was formed by Alan, Larry and Bryan, and SURFCAM was launched -- the first PC-based modeling and NC programming software to be offered commercially to the industry.

Over the next decade, SURFCAM's features advanced along with the capabilities of the PC. Every release brought new firsts and functionality: first NURBS surface technology on a PC ; first PC-based four-axis simultaneous machining; first CAM system for 32-bit enhanced-mode Microsoft Windows, first PC CAM system with automatic rendering of blended surfaces; first to deploy new features in 2- and 3-axis rest machining.

In early 2000, Pat Patterson (Uncle Pat), assisted by Alan, began work on what would become the ground-breaking TrueMill technology, a completely new toolpath strategy that controls the load on the tool to significantly increase productivity (in some cases over 100%) and extend tool life for all materials, including aluminum, steels, titanium, Inconel and other exotics.

SURFCAM Velocity powered by TrueMill was launched in 2005, with internal instructions on how to limit the maximum stepover to cut optimally everywhere along the toolpath on any part geometry. DP Technology teams up with NASCAR racing team Petty Enterprises

DP Technology, a leader in the industry of computer-aided-manufacturing (CAM) and maker of ESPRIT® CAM software, has become an official sponsor and technology partner of Petty Enterprises, a NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) racing team based in North Carolina.

DP Technology continues to lead the pack on the racetrack with the sponsorship of two NASCAR Sprint Cup Series racing teams, namely the No. 43 Cheerios/Betty Crocker Dodge and the No. 45 Marathon/Wells Fargo/PVA Dodge, owned and operated by Petty Enterprises. Having become unsatisfied with its previous CAM software due to "lack of improvements and growth versatility," Petty Enterprises was in the process of investigating various new CAM software packages when engineers from the company visited an ESPRIT booth at a machining industry trade show in North Carolina, according to Bobby Turner, design engineer for Petty Enterprises.

"While investigating, we also learned that an engineer in the office had used ESPRIT at a machine shop he worked at prior to Petty Enterprises," Turner said.

Petty Enterprises will use ESPRIT to write programming code for its HAAS V4 CNC machine, which is used to make several different kinds of parts for its racecars — ranging from the chassis and suspension to the body. "Pretty much everything except engine components," Turner said.

Petty Enterprises is currently in the process of implementing ESPRIT software which, when fully implemented, will improve the production of parts for the racing teams' vehicles. "It should save us some time and money, which in turn will allow us to spend more time improving parts and spending money in other important areas," Turner said.

The new partners have opted to join forces through 2010.

"We wanted to find software that would be easy to use, meet our current and future CNC needs, and have a support staff that could help us with training or any other technical assistance," Derrick Finley, technical director for Petty Enterprises, said. "Out of the different CAM packages we investigated, we found ESPRIT to be the software that best fit these needs. The support and training we have had thus far has been phenomenal, and the people at ESPRIT have been a great pleasure to work with."

PTC Announces Winners of DesignQuest Challenge


Worldwide Student Design Competition Spotlights Innovation

NEEDHAM/; The Product Development Company®, today announced the winners of its 2008 DesignQuest Challenge. Sponsored by the PTC Global Education Program, the worldwide design competition provides students the opportunity to showcase their achievements in product design using PTC Pro/ENGINEER® or Pro/DESKTOP®. The competition was open to individual students and student teams attending academic institutions that are currently enrolled in the PTC Global Education Program. Each contestant had to be a registered student in the 2007-2008 academic year and was sponsored by a teacher at their school.

Delcam’s PartMaker SwissCAM selected by Citizen as a preferred CAM system

CADCAM developer Delcam has entered into a strategic partnership with Citizen Machinery, the world-leading builder of Swiss-type lathes, to encourage the use of the company's PartMaker SwissCAM software by Citizen customers. 2008 International ANSYS Conference to Inspire Engineering

Siemens PLM Software Addresses Needs Identified in Global Design Strategies Research Report

New Aberdeen Group Report Finds Global Design is Integral in Meeting Market Demand for Product Development Across Five Key Industries

PLANO, Texas, July 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Siemens PLM Software, a business unit of Siemens Industry Automation Division and a leading global provider of product lifecycle management (PLM) software and services, today responded to the findings of a series of Industry Sector Insight reports unveiled by Aberdeen Group. The reports were based on the findings of benchmark research entitled "Profitable Design Chains: Global Product Design Comes of Age" which identifies three key Best-in-Class themes for global product development initiatives -- protecting product intellectual property, designing in parallel, and coordinating global design teams. To further this research, Aberdeen looked at the global design strategies of five vertical industries and examined what these themes mean to each industry.


Released in June 2008(1) and spanning Aerospace & Defense, Automotive, Consumer Packaged Goods, High Tech & Electronics and Machinery industries, the research identified key strategic initiatives and challenges specific to each industry and how manufacturers can best implement global design strategies to address these initiatives.

A summary of the Aberdeen Sector Insight report findings follows.

Aerospace & Defense

The report finds that while A&D manufacturers have begun to change how they think about global design, they are behind other industry averages across all key performance indicators. Furthermore, A&D manufacturers face the greatest consequences of losing product intellectual property given the complex nature of the components and subsystems involved. A&D manufacturers are behind the industry average in terms of implementing capabilities that would help to protect IP -- 44 percent compared with 69 percent respectively. As A&D manufacturers look to capitalize on the growing global workforce, it will be even more important for them to implement secure global design strategies that address this challenge and help better control who has access to the data as well as the amount of time that access is available.

Automotive

With more and more automotive companies finding it hard to turn a profit, the report finds that lowering costs is the top concern. In keeping with this focus, meeting revenue targets is the area in which automotive manufacturers lagged behind the most compared to the industry average -- 55 percent compared to 67 percent. As automotive manufacturers address the challenge of lowering costs, they are taking advantage of different labor costs around the globe. Furthermore, automotive manufacturers are beginning to leverage a global workforce to not only reduce the cost of product development but to gain more insight into unfamiliar markets.

Consumer Packaged Goods

In a challenging retail marketplace, consumer package goods companies are constantly faced with the challenge of getting products to market faster while making sure costs are kept at a minimum. Working across multiple disciplines (R&D, marketing, packaging, sourcing, regulatory and manufacturing, among others), CPG manufacturers must successfully coordinate with these teams to ensure the successful launch of products within short time windows. Overall, CPG manufacturers indicate performance that is consistently at or below multi-industry average levels. While they are behind in meeting cost targets, they remain ahead of the industry average in meeting launch dates. In order to take full advantage of their global design networks and to remain competitive within the retail marketplace, CPG manufacturers must continually look to global design initiatives to help them get products to market faster in a cost-effective manner.

High Tech & Electronics

One of the biggest challenges that HT&E manufacturers face is getting products to market faster before technology becomes obsolete. Despite this recognition, the report finds that HT&E manufacturers are only slightly ahead of the industry average when it comes to meeting target launch dates. The majority of respondents report that they have had global design initiatives in place for over a year (71) percent. High tech manufacturers will need to capitalize on the opportunity for further improvement by leveraging these design chains to effectively accelerate the design process.

Machinery

Global design is a newer trend for Industrial equipment manufacturers as only one-third of respondents to the study reported that their initiatives were less than a year old. Industrial equipment manufacturers fall behind the industry average across all metrics with a gap seen in the ability to meet product revenue targets (56 percent compared to 67 percent) and development cost targets (52 percent compared to 67 percent). Moving forward, industrial equipment manufacturers will need to learn from the experiences of other manufacturing industries with more mature global design processes in place.

Methodology

Aberdeen Group examined the global design strategies of more than 170 enterprises. To gain an understanding of how manufacturers can best take advantage of global design chains, respondents were benchmarked according to their performance across five key performance indicators and divided among three performance categories: Best-in-Class (top 20 percent of performers); Laggard organizations (bottom 30 percent) and the Industry Average (the remaining 50 percent). These measures included the percent of products meeting targets for revenue, product cost, product launch, quality, and overall product development costs.
